- Argentine soccer star Lucas Trejo's wife and their children died in a pair of earthquakes that rocked Venezuela on June 24.

- The soccer team Deportivo la Guaira, announced the "sensitive passing" of Trejo's family on social media on Saturday.

- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake first struck near the city of Yumare, and a 7.5 quake followed less than a minute after.

Lucas Trejo, the Argentine soccer player and star defender for the the Venezuelan team Club Sport Marítimo de la Guaira, has suffered a devastating loss as a result of a pair of earthquakes that ravaged Venezuela on Wednesday.

Trejo's wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, Aarón and Ainhoa Trejo, were in their apartment in the Venezuelan city of La Guiaira when the twin quakes struck. The magnitude-7.2 quake followed by a quake registering at 7.5 destroyed their building, per *Todo Noticias**,* and they were declared missing. Trejo, meanwhile, was in the capital city of Caracas with Maritimo to train for an upcoming match.

On Saturday, both the team Deportiva La Guira and Trejo's fellow player, Edson Tortolero, announced that Trejo's wife and children had been discovered dead.

"From the #DLG we join the grief that overwhelms player Lucas Trejo, for the sensitive passing of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and of his children, Aarón and Ainhoa Trejo," the team wrote in an X post in Spanish on Saturday. "Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones.

Tortolero, a winger and midfielder for Venezuelan team Carabobo FC, shared an image of an excavator digging away at a massive pile of rubble to his Instagram stories on Saturday. Tortolero wrote the following caption over the image, translated from Spanish: "We inform all the people of Venezuela and Argentina that the bodies of Lucas Trejo's family members have been found. We thank everyone for their support and ask for the utmost respect for his family during this time."

Tortolero continued, "We pray for eternal life for them, and we also thank the family members, pastors, players and fellow fans who came to offer support."

Originally from Cordoba, Argentina, Trejo got his start in the late 2000s playing in a professional club in the Super League Greece. He returned to South America in 2012 to play for Sportivo Belgrano before joining Marítimo as recently as February.

The twin earthquakes which shook Venezuela to its core on Wednesday are the worst the country has faced in a century.

According to the BBC, more than 900 people have been confirmed killed, while more than 3,360 have reported injuries. After four days, more than 50,000 people are still missing as international rescue crews fly to Venezuela to aid in the search.
