Netflix's upcoming *Gears of War* movie will officially be an origin story for Delta Squad, the main infantry team of the video game franchise on which it's based.

"The origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity," an official logline description reads.

David Leitch, the filmmaker who gave us *Bullet Train* and *The Fall Guy*, will direct Netflix's *Gears of War* and produce it through his 87North company. Jon Spaihts, a writer on the *Dune* movies, is behind the script.

“The game really is about the bonds between teams. It's about brotherhood at its core,” Matt Booty, Xbox's executive vice president and chief content officer, tells EW. “When you go visit the studio, their tagline is ‘Never Fight Alone.’ So when you think about that for a dramatic narrative, it's a pretty good starting point.”

*Gears of War*, from publisher Xbox Game Studios and the Vancouver-based developers at the Coalition, originally launched in 2006 with a concept centered around a war between mankind and the Locust Horde that emerged from beneath the earth on the planet Sera. In the main game series, you follow Marcus Fenix, the head of Delta Squad, the team that fought in key conflicts across the campaign.

The *Gears* mythology was further built out across several spinoff and sequel games, comic books, and novels. *Gears of War: E-Day*, the sixth main game installment, will arrive as an Xbox console exclusive this Oct. 6. The prequel will take players 14 years prior to the events of the first game to explore Emergence Day, the moment the Locust Horde first attacked on the surface of Sera.

In addition to the live-action movie, Netflix previously announced plans for an adult animated series based on *Gears of War*.

Xbox is currently in the works on more than a dozen different adaptations based on their gaming IP, including a sequel to the Jack Black-led *Minecraft* movie and a third season of Amazon's *Fallout*. EW exclusively revealed that a live-action film based on *Sea of Thieves* is forthcoming, from producer Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* and *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*.
