Director Anthony Rich opened up on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast about filming the breakup between Kaley Cuoco's Penny and Johnny Galecki's Leonard just weeks after they'd broken up in real life

Rich said that there was one part of the storyline that Cuoco and Galecki weren't on board with

Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco had an emotional time making The Big Bang Theory's third season.

Anthony Rich, who directed multiple episodes of The Big Bang Theory, reflected on directing his first episode, April 2010's "The Spaghetti Catalyst," on the June 29 episode of The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, hosted by Jessica Radloff.

Galecki's Leonard and Cuoco's Penny had called it quits one episode earlier, at the very end of "The Wheaton Recurrence.” In "The Spaghetti Catalyst,” things had settled as they navigated their new normal.

“There was a lot going on that week,” Rich, 58, joked. It was Rich's first time directing for television.

As Radloff pointed out, Galecki, 51, and Cuoco, 40, had been dating for “about two years” and had broken up in real life “four to six weeks earlier.”

“And by all accounts, they handled it beautifully, but no doubt about it, it was really, really difficult,” Radloff, who published 2023's The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, said. “So now their characters are breaking up, and this is just hitting a little too close to home.”

“A lot too close to home,” Rich said.

Rich noted that Galecki and Cuoco didn't have a problem playing their characters breaking up; instead, they felt like they couldn't figure out what had “actually happened” to the couple's relationship. At the end of "The Wheaton Recurrence,” Penny stormed off, but viewers didn't get to see their fight or how they actually called things quits.

“Now we've come after the fact, and no one really knew how to process that,” Rich said. Galecki and Cuoco, he said, were “right” about it missing a scene or two, but it ultimately didn't actually affect the episode. Rich understood why The Big Bang Theory writers didn't want to go for a “real sad breakup episode.”

“People don't wanna watch that. They're here to laugh,” he said.

Near the end of the script, Penny and Leonard finally see each other in their apartment's laundry room. Rich remembered that both actors felt like the show was “not giving proper attention to the demise of the relationship.” Instead, the scene played like they had both already “moved on."

“And I remember it was hard for them to even get through it,” he said.

Rich remembered discussing the scene with the actors when Cuoco "started sobbing.” He said she was crushed by “the weight of it all” and went off stage to take a couple of minutes to herself. He found her on Penny's set, still sobbing. “She goes, ‘I thought I could handle it, but it's kinda catching up to me.' And then she looks at me and she's like, ‘And I'm ruining your episode.' I was like, ‘You're not ruining my episode.' ”

Rich said that ultimately Cuoco, Galecki and the rest of the cast were “such pros” that they made it work, and he never talked to her about crying on set.

Things ultimately worked out for Penny and Leonard, who got back together during season five, got engaged during season seven and married in season nine. The show ended in 2019, after 12 seasons.

Galecki said in Radloff's book of his relationship to Cuoco, “I adore the friends that we are. I think I might value my relationship with her more than any other previous relationship or relationship afterwards. We just have such a bond that I appreciate so much. And I think that's part of our great friendship."

Cuoco added, "I think a lot of what made Leonard and Penny work so well was my relationship with Johnny off camera,. They were always giving each other s---, and Johnny and I have a similar relationship — which you do after years of being together. We've always had each other's backs, and you can't lose that. And I do think it happened on-screen. It made our relationship funny and endearing."

Cuoco began a relationship with actor Tom Pelphrey in 2022, and they got engaged in 2024. They welcomed their daughter Matilda in 2023 and have a second daughter on the way.

Galecki revealed in 2024 that he had secretly married his wife, Morgan. They welcomed daughter Oona that year. Galecki also welcomed a son, Avery, during a previous relationship.
