Yoko & John At Home

The wild fandom surrounding The Beatles may have etched Yoko Ono's name into pop culture history, but Ono has long been a barrier-breaking innovator in her own right. John Lennon once called her "the world's most famous unknown artist," adding that "everybody knows her name, but nobody knows what she does."

Ono describes herself as an artist, musician and activist. In each field, the nonagenarian has been a disruptor, shaking up the avant-garde art scene with thought-provoking multimedia exhibitions, defying and inventing new musical genres (even penning an off-Broadway musical) and staying true to her vision for imagining peace around the world.

In fact, she was already a well-respected artist preparing to showcase her work in a solo exhibition at London's Indica Gallery on the fateful day one of the Fab Four stopped by in 1966. She and Lennon instantly bonded over the intrigue of her art installation inviting viewers to "Hammer a Nail In."

While her story instantly got swept up in Beatlemania, Ono has also been "increasingly seen by art historians as one of the most important pioneers of conceptualism and performance art," historical musicologist and New York University professor Brigid Cohen says, adding she sees Ono as "one of the most original musical thinkers and experimenters of the late 20th century."

Ono herself admitted that she was never one to stay within the lines. The "boundaries that were set up in this society and the prescribed forms of art were something that I ignored from the beginning," she told The Japan Times in 2009.

Here, we highlight just a handful of Ono's accomplishments.

1. First Female Philosophy Student at Gakushuin University

"Having grown up in World War II-era Tokyo, and endured the 1945 Tokyo firebombings and starvation conditions as an internal refugee in the countryside outside Nagano, Ono came to realize that her imagination was the only constant in her life," Cohen says. Tokyo's Gakushuin University offered Ono the chance to delve deeper into life's questions—and her choice of studies showcased her independent mindset. She is often cited as their first female philosophy student.

"In entering the program, Ono rebelled against the so-called ryosi kenbo ("good wife, wise mother") code of women's citizenship in Japan," Cohen adds. After studying for two semesters, Ono moved to New York to continue her education at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.

2. Avant-Garde Artist Provocateur

Cultivating her craft in New York City during the late 1950s, Ono made her solo exhibition debut in 1961 with "Painting to Be Stepped On," a canvas on the floor with instructions for viewers to walk right onto it. Such audience involvement became central to her art, best showcased in "Cut Piece" (1964), in which she invited audience members to cut away pieces of her clothing as she sat on a stage. "It represents her concern with giving and taking, and with questions of peace and aggression," Cohen explains.

"Many features of Ono's early work became influential, both large- and small-scale," Cohen says, citing the example of lighting a match during performances, which other artists like Allan Kaprow later adopted.

Though her style was linked to the 1960s and 1970s conceptual art movement of Fluxus, she opted not to officially join the experimental collective. "Ono was allergic to any kind of groupthink, likely in reaction to the fascist movements of her childhood in wartime Japan," Cohen says. "She didn't want to position herself in the center of any group—even a far-out group like Fluxus."

3. Pioneering Musician

Ono experimented with analogue tapes in the early to mid-1960s by manipulating the tape itself. She created an early form of electronic music, set to art performances and film. She also pulled from a wide range of niche genres like kabuki (highly stylized Japanese performance art), Austro-German Expressionist opera and free jazz. Ono "developed highly original vocal techniques that were central to her famous '16-track vocal style,'" Cohen says.

She also notes that Ono "anticipated punk" with those techniques, especially apparent in her single "Why" (1970). She later became a part of the New Wave movement with hit songs like "Walking on Thin Ice" (1981), which gave the musician her first Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play No. 1 placement decades later in 2003. "She became highly involved in EDM [electronic dance music] all through her later years," Cohen says. "She acted as a fairy godmother to generations of young artists working in art rock, pop, experimental hip-hop, electronic music, queer performance art and so on."

Her fascination with the concept of imagination also inspired her husband's 1971 Billboard No. 3 hit "Imagine," which earned her a co-writing credit 46 years later in 2017. Her more widely known musical collaborations were with Lennon through the Plastic Ono Band, which started in 1968 and was revived with son Sean Lennon in 2009.

4. Concert Cultivator

Ono's work has always been rooted in community, and she enjoyed bringing together colleagues. Ono helped popularize the practice of loft concerts by hosting music series in her Manhattan home on Chambers Street in the 1960s.

"At the time it hadn't been usual to host concerts in artists' studio-lofts, but after Ono it became a new norm," Cohen says. As a transnationalist artist, she was dedicated to promoting experimental creators across continents—and one of the first to connect the art scene between Japan and New York, even helping to coordinate a 1962 Japan tour for avant-garde musician John Cage.

5. Poetic Justice

Ono's childhood love of haiku developed into poetry during her college years, and was peppered throughout her instructional art. Her piece "Touch Poem for Group of People" (1963) urges viewers to reach out and touch one another, and some consider her 1964 book Grapefruit a work of poetry as well. The Poetry Foundation spotlighted the book in a 2019 exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Art director Fred Sasaki called it "poetry as a way of thinking, looking and being."

Continuing her lyrical work, Ono published her 20-word poem "Mother Earth" in the July/August 2018 issue of the foundation's Poetry magazine.

6. Peace Activist

Ono's 1961 debut concert at Carnegie Recital Hall featured "AOS–to David Tudor," a self-described five-part "opera" that viscerally addressed the "blue chaos of war," as Cohen notes. It was informed by Ono's childhood experiences during World War II Tokyo firebombings.

Her most famous peace campaign was her Bed-In for Peace with Lennon, when they turned their 1969 honeymoon in Amsterdam and Montreal into a hotel sit-in.

Ono's most wide-reaching project to date is Wish Tree. "As a child in Japan, I used to go to a temple and write out a wish on a piece of thin paper and tie it around the branch of a tree," she said, noting that the knots looked like white flowers blossoming from a distance. She invites visitors to write their own hopes on paper made of pulp. Those papers are then buried at the base of the Imagine Peace Tower, which has lit up Reykjavik, Iceland, since 2007.

7. Philanthropist

Throughout her life, Ono has championed human rights, advocating for women, children and the LGBTQ+ community. Much of her philanthropy has been through the Spirit Foundation, which she founded with Lennon in 1978. "When I make money, I put it in there," Ono told Samaritan Magazine in 2011.

The nonprofit has supported education initiatives that have built more than 100 schools in Africa, Asia and South America. It has also partnered with dozens of global charities that Ono herself handpicks, ranging from Second Harvest and Why Hunger in the United States to National Holocaust Memorial Day Trust in London.

The iconic black hat worn by the Wicked Witch in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz will soon hit the auction block, where it is expected to sell for even more than a similar hat, which sold for $3 million in 2024.

Heritage Auctions will host the sale, which takes place Dec. 9 and also includes other entertainment memorabilia, like a signed photo of Walt Disney and a typed carbon-draft screenplay of the 1983 film Scarface.

The hat — worn by actress Margaret Hamilton, who portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West — has a starting bid of $100,000.

According to the auction listing, the "vintage, original Adrian-designed signature hat is constructed of black wool bunting with a wide brim reinforced by an interior metal hoop."

The cone-shaped crown measures more than a foot high and is set at a rearward tilt to create the character's distinctive silhouette."

The hat is one of the few surviving examples of its kind and distinguished by its original 22" elastic chinstrap, "used to secure the hat to Hamilton's head during the unforgettable flying sequences."

Another Wicked Witch hat worn in the film was sold by Heritage Auctions on December 7, 2024, and also retained its chinstrap. The sale of that hat achieved a record $2.93 million. This is the only other known Wicked Witch hat featuring the chinstrap to come to auction.

Per Heritage, "apart from the Ruby Slippers, no other Wizard of Oz artifact carries greater significance."Heritage adds that the hat "shows expected age and production wear," including three areas of old adhesive residue on the underside of the brim, but it "has undergone recent, sensitive professional conservation to tighten the brim to the cone."

Per Heritage, the hat was originally acquired in 1970 directly from David Weisz, owner of The David Weisz Co., which conducted the legendary MGM Auction of that year.Heritage last year sold Judy Garland's iconic ruby-red slippers from the film for $28 million.

The shoes are one of only four known surviving pairs of the ruby slippers worn by Garland in the movie. Auctioneers from Heritage Auctions called them the "Holy Grail of Hollywood memorabilia," at the time of the sale.

Including the auction house's fee, the unknown buyer ultimately paid $32.5 million for the footwear — a selling price that made them the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold at auction. The previous record-holder — the white dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch — sold in 2011 for $5.52 million with fees, according to the auction house.

Jim Carrey and his *How the Grinch Stole Christmas* costar Taylor Momsen showed off their hard-rock bona fides when they reunited at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this weekend to celebrate their mutual love for Seattle legends Soundgarden.

Carrey presented the honor to them in a moving speech, while Momsen performed their 1992 song "Rusty Cage" with the band's remaining members and then joined several other special guests — including Brandi Carlile, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains — for an impressive rendition of their 1994 hit "Black Hole Sun."

Their participation in the tribute marked Carrey and Momsen's first time reuniting for a big public outing in 25 years. They met on the set of *The Grinch*, in which the Carrey portrayed the titular Christmas-hating curmudgeon and the *Gossip Girl *actress played Cindy-Lou Who, the sweet little Whoville girl who helps open the Grinch's heart. The momentous occasion was timely, as Momsen recently recalled how she didn't know what Carrey actually looked like when they worked together because he was buried under a ton of prosthetic makeup.

During the Nov. 8 ceremony, Momsen, who was only 7 years old when she filmed *The Grinch*, shared some of her favorite memories of making the movie with PEOPLE, expressing how working with Carrey left a "lasting impact" on her.

"I just love that he was very protective of me," she said. "He was always very kind. And just the entire experience of filming *Grinch* and getting to know him so well, even in all the makeup, was just wonderful."

Carrey helped welcome Soundgarden into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Lily Cornell Silver, the daughter of the group's late frontman, Chris Cornell. The rock star died by suicide in 2017 at the age of 52.**

In his remarks, the *Ace Ventura* actor praised Soundgarden for having "resurrected rock & roll for me" in the late 1980s and early '90s. He remembered how he felt watching them perform their 1996 song "Pretty Noose" during his first time hosting *Saturday Night Live, *adding that he requested them as the musical guests for that episode.

"I stood right in front of them, letting the waves of electricity wash over me like an audio baptism," Carrey recalled. "They pushed me under, and when I came up, I was free."

Surviving Soundgarden members Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil, and Ben Shepherd, alongside original bassist Hiro Yamamoto, collected their awards for the induction after their performance. Other inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year included Outkast, the White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company.

Nintendo released the trailer for the sequel to 2023's *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* during one of the company's Direct livestreams on Wednesday. Among the big reveals are the introductions of Bowser Jr. and Princess Rosalina.

Oscar winner and Captain Marvel herself Brie Larson will voice Rosalina, while *Uncut Gems* director and *Happy Gilmore 2* actor Benny Safdie will voice Bowser's progeny.

Pratt returns as the voice of Mario alongside his costars from the first movie: Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

Based on the *Super Mario Galaxy* video games, the sequel is helmed by the first film's directing team, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. It's currently set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.

The first movie saw Mario and his brother Luigi, two plumbers from New York City, get sucked through a portal to the Mushroom Kingdom, which was under siege by Bowser. Teaming up with Peach, Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), and host of other allies, Mario helped stop Bowser's invasion.

This next chapter picks up with Bowser still in mini form after eating a size-shrinking mushroom at the end of the first movie. He's living in a mini castle under the watchful eye of Mario and Luigi, but he still has his heart set on Peach.

The trailer then shows Peach and Toad shooting off into space, revealing some of the other worlds the gang will traverse. Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. is determined to bust his father out of mini jail.

"At this moment, our team of artists at Illumination are just weeks away from completing animation," producer Chris Meledandri said during the Nintendo Direct presentation.

A familiar face has returned to the Wizarding World. **

Tom Felton, who starred as the silver-haired Slytherin Draco Malfoy in the *Harry Potter* films, made his Broadway debut in* Harry Potter and the Cursed Child *to thunderous applause on Tuesday.**

In a clip from the performance (above), Felton appears onstage next to his once-foe Harry Potter (John Skelley) and manages to utter only a single — yet, *very* *memorable* — word before receiving a standing ovation from the entire Lyric Theatre audience.**

"Potter!" Felton shouts. "I need a favor!"

Harry's surname is something that Felton's Draco often snarled, spat, and snapped throughout his many appearances in the *Harry Potter* films, from their childhood years in 2001's *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone* all the way until 2011's *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2*. **

Thankfully, the pair get a chance to reevaluate their contentious bond as adults over the course of the* Cursed Child*. The Tony award-winning play, which was originally told in two separate installments, was later condensed into a single act play in 2021 after it was revised by its creative team during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Back in June, Felton announced that he would be stepping back into Draco's shoes for a 19-week limited engagement from Nov. 11 until March 22.**

"It's very much a pinch-me kind of situation," Felton said on *Today* at the time. "I keep thinking I'm dreaming. That same month, Felton also addressed whether Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's social media comments, which many have deemed transphobic, had any impact on his stage return.

"No, I can't say it does, I'm not really that attuned to it," he said. "If anything, I remind myself I've been lucky to travel the world, and I've not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter, and she's responsible for that, so I'm incredibly grateful."

*Harry Potter and the Cursed Child *picks up 19 years after the events of the final *Harry Potter *book as the children of Harry, Ginny, Ron, Hermione, and Draco attend their very first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along the way, unexpected friendships are forged as the kids find themselves facing off against their very own world-ending threat.

In addition to Felton and Skelley, the production also stars Rachel Christopher as Hermione Granger, Daniel Fredrick as Ron Weasley, and Trish Lindstrom as Ginny Potter.

Ruby Rose is taking a swing at Sydney Sweeney after *Christy*'s box office failure.

The film, which sees Sweeney portray trailblazing professional boxer Christy Martin, had a disastrous box office debut last weekend. Earning just $1.3 million domestically, *Christy* now ranks among the top 12 worst openings for films playing on more than 2,000 screens, according to Box Office Mojo. Alluding to that gross, Rose says Sweeney is to blame for the film's poor box office.

"The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing," Rose wrote Tuesday on Threads. "I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting."

The *Batwoman* star went on to acknowledge that "losing roles happens all the time," but didn't hold back when it came to voicing frustration about Sweeney being the one to portray the lesbian boxer.

Rose, who also identifies as a lesbian, continued, "For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the 'people.' None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better."

Representatives for Sweeney and *Christy* did not immediately respond to **'s request for comment.

Rose's remarks came days after Sweeney addressed the film's disappointing box office debut on social media, stating that she remains "deeply proud" of the project regardless of the money it makes in theaters.

"This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Sweeney wrote Monday on Instagram of portraying Martin. "This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we've helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy's story could save lives."

She added, "If *Christy* gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. So yes I'm proud. Why? Because we don't always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact."

Batwoman

The film not only traces Martin's professional achievements but also delves into the turmoil of her personal life as a survivor of domestic abuse. Martin married  her coach Jim Martin in 1991 and nearly two decades later, he attempted to murder her in their home. He was ultimately found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree. The athlete, who identifies as a lesbian, is now married to rival boxer Lisa Holewyne.

For her part, Martin has only spoken highly of the actress while making the rounds with Sweeney on the film's press tour. Celebrating *Christy*'s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, the retired boxer praised Sweeney's ability to disappear into the role.

"She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected," she told the crowd. "She wasn't the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy in this movie. And I think it's awesome. She kicks ass!"

Meanwhile, Sweeney has been under fire for her divisive American Eagle ad campaign, released in July, which played up the homophones "jeans" and "genes," leading many to accuse the ad of utilizing racist eugenics language. Sweeney initially stayed silent on the controversy while conservative figures from Megyn Kelly to President Donald Trump weighed in to voice support for her.

When Sweeney finally addressed the issue earlier this month, she declined to respond to the "genetic superiority" criticism and told *GQ*, "I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear." Amid the firestorm, it was revealed in August that Sweeney was a registered voter with the Republican Party.
