Edgar Wright creates a wild dystopian landscape with his action thriller "The Running Man." It's also a world brimming with all things Stephen King.

Wright's adaptation of King's 1982 novel (written as Richard Bachman) includes a diner named after the legendary author's wife Tabitha in "Running Man" (in theaters Nov. 14), which follows a desperate man on the world's deadliest game show. King got a kick out of that one.

But British director's favorite nods are in the locker room full of game-show contestants. There are familiar surnames above lockers inspired by actors in King movies – Travolta, Walken, Duvall – plus a lime-green jumpsuit with "King" on the back, a reference to the author's memorably mossy role in the 1982 horror movie "Creepshow."

Glen Powell stars as a man who has to stay alive on a killer game show in Edgar Wright's action thriller "The Running Man," based on the Stephen King novel.

Recently, Wright gifted the jumpsuit to King. "I got it!" King exclaims and even tried it on. "It's a little big, but I wear it with pride, man."

The two creators are frequent email pen pals, and Wright has sent many old-school vinyl rock 'n' roll records to King over the years. In a USA TODAY exclusive interview, the pair get together on Zoom – Wright from London, King from Florida – to chat about the new "Running Man," the book and the 1987 sci-fi action flick that was wildly different from King's vision.

The first movie starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards, a military helicopter pilot framed for a deadly massacre and forced to be on "The Running Man," where he battles a crew of larger-than-life killers. Wright's film stars Glen Powell as Richards, who – as in the book – is an unemployed, working-class man who goes on the game show to provide for his sick daughter. Stay alive for 30 days and he wins $1 billion, but he's also being hunted by a group of murderous mercenaries.

Wright, 51, first read "The Running Man" "when I was like 12 or 13, possibly too young," he says with a laugh. "Probably exactly the right age." ("Everybody says that," King quips.)

Wright was 14 when Schwarzenegger's R-rated movie came out in U.K. theaters, so he watched it on VHS. "A lot of the story just hadn't been adapted at all," Wright says. "It really stayed in my mind there was a whole other movie to make."

How does the new 'Running Man' differ from Arnold Schwarzenegger's cult movie?

When King, 78, watched the original "Running Man" film, "what I remember best was they had the sound cranked up. It's like 'Spinal Tap': This one goes to 11," the author says, adding that his wife watched it with her fingers in her ears. For Wright, the most successful thing about that movie was Richard Dawson as the evil TV producer/game-show host – casting the "Family Feud" icon was such a "masterstroke" that Wright didn't even attempt it. (For his version, Josh Brolin is the villainous producer, while Colman Domingo is the bombastic show host.)

Wright included in the new "Running Man" one nifty Schwarzenegger Easter egg: His face is on currency. They had to get photo approval from the former California governor, and Wright and Powell presented him with a massive $100 bill with his mug on it. "He looked like a lottery winner," Wright says.

Watching the new "Running Man" reminded Schwarzenegger how hard it is to make action movies: He told Wright that he enjoys watching his films back, "but I never used to like shooting them. I much prefer shooting 'Kindergarten Cop' and 'Twins.' "

Original "Running Man" star Arnold Schwarzenegger's face is on currency in the new "Running Man."

King thought Schwarzenegger was "fun" in that original movie, but Powell is closer to his Ben Richards.

"Arnold didn't look like somebody who had been missing many meals. He was ripped," King says. Also, "he doesn't seem like an Everyman. He seems like Arnold. And Glen seems like a regular guy: You would believe him in this part. He's handsome but he's not a Clark Gable, big movie star kind of guy. He's a regular guy who's just better looking than most of us."

Latest 'The Running Man' offers shades of a Bruce Willis classic

King likens Wright's "Running Man" to "Die Hard" in that "you've got one guy against a lot of other people. But the nice thing about this movie and 'Die Hard' is that they are action pictures that have some thought involved with them, and also there's that little twinkle of humor in there, too." Wright, for one, sees a lot of Bruce Willis' John McClane in Powell's performance.

"Even though he's a cop, he's not on home turf, he hasn't got his shoes on, he's completely outnumbered, and he's kind of wildly improvising and winging it. So there's a vulnerability to the character," Wright says of McClane. Played by Powell, Richards is "somebody who made a choice out of desperation. ... He's not like a super-spy, he's not a trained killer. He's an out-of-work dad."

Bestselling author Stephen King, shown in a 1970 file photo.

Wright sent his and Michael Bacall's screenplay to King before production started, but the author didn't give him any notes. "I just wanted to know all the secrets about making 'Baby Driver,' " King says, referring to his favorite Wright movie. That he loved it was both blessing and curse, Wright recalls thinking: "Not only do I have to live up to the film in my head, I have to live up to the film in Stephen's head as well!"

One addition that the author appreciated was a moment between the movie's hero and Amelia (Emilia Jones), a young, well-to-do woman whom Ben carjacks while on the run.

"He says something to her that is really striking: 'You are wearing a scarf around your neck that would feed a thousand people,' " King recalls. "That is like the serious side of ('The Running Man') that flies under the radar. It has a little bit of a texture to it that you don't find in a lot of Jason Statham pictures. Or Arnold Schwarzenegger pictures."

Influencer Michael Willis Heard — who posted under the username @LoveandLightTV — has died at age 47.

The social media star went viral as the voice behind a popular "Yes King" TikTok audio, which was pulled from one of his adult films. Heard's death was confirmed by his friend and collaborator Monty Huffman, who paid homage to the late creator with an Instagram post on Monday, Nov. 10.

"You are always in my heart your [sic] amazing and will always be remembered as a GOD," he wrote alongside a selfie of the pair. "This so hard and very sad I'm in so much pain 😭😭😭 you made a difference in my life you are the angel that god sent me."

Another friend of Heard's, known as Dreamy B, organized a GoFundMe for Heard's loved ones. In the page's description, he clarified that Heard's family did not ask him to set up a fundraiser, and they are "not in a financial crisis by any means."

Dreamy explained that he decided to create the donation page as he understands "the cost of losing a family member." The page has already nearly reached a quarter of the overall $4,500 goal.

"This was placed on my heart as an individual who loves Michael, and I understand that not only losing someone is a burden, but bearing the financial responsibilities is a burden, and I wanted to create this to help alleviate the burden," the grieving friend wrote, adding that "all proceeds" from the GoFundMe would be given to Heard's daughter, Mykel, and Huffman.

PHILADELPHIA − Legendary documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has been trying to tell the story of America for 10 years. It's just a coincidence that it's premiering in a political moment in which America is reckoning with the story of itself daily.

"It's good − particularly in times of division, which is almost all of American history − to be able to have a complicated story of our origin. Not just a superficial one, not one that is glossed over," Burns tells USA TODAY on a sunny fall day in Old City Philadelphia, walking on the cobblestoned streets next to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the very setting for America's origin story.

Documentarian Ken Burns looks at an exhibit at Philadelphia's Museum of the American Revolution. The filmmaker is releasing his own exploration of that period in history on PBS this month.

Burns was in the historic city to promote his latest massive documentary undertaking, "The American Revolution" premiering on PBS ahead of America's 250th anniversary in 2026 (Nov. 16-21, 8 ET/PT, check local listings). Together with co-directors Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, Burns explains how we went from 13 unconnected and unruly colonies under a British king to one independent, democratic nation under a flag of stars and stripes.

The six-part series, airing on PBS over a single week, is didactic and accessible, thrilling and tense. Narrated by longtime Burns collaborator Peter Coyote, the history is also brought to life by celebrities ranging from Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep to Ethan and Maya Hawke, who voice the words of historical figures both well-known and obscure. The episodes are illustrated with portraits, documents and painstaking recreations.

There has never been a more meticulous and revelatory look at the American creation myth before. Like Burns' "The Civil War" and "The Vietnam War" documentaries before this, "Revolution" does not hold back or sugarcoat the violence or morally thorny parts of the story. All our cards are on the table, and some of them are distinctly uncomfortable.

"It's good to have a serious conversation about it," Burns says. "And it's not only about what happened in Philadelphia. [The revolution was] an incredibly brutal civil war and a world war, in addition to the most significant revolution that ever happened. ... We tend to simplify the people who lived before us. We don't think that they were as sophisticated as we are. And the people who met in here," he says, gesturing at Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, "were unbelievably sophisticated and at the forefront of thinking in the world."

"They invented this new idea," he says. "Everybody before them had been a 'subject,' and now they were creating this new thing called 'citizen.' "

Everything you think you know about America's founding is wrong (maybe)

"I don't think we actually know much about our American Revolution at all," says Burns' co-director Botstein, who worked with him on "The Vietnam War" and "The U.S. and the Holocaust." "It's kind of shrouded in gallant myth, and it feels very far away."

The three directors, Burns, Botstein and Schmidt, retired to the Museum of the American Revolution after walking by Independence Hall, which they couldn't step inside during the record-breaking government shutdown. Sitting under a portrait of a young George Washington, they tried to distill a decade of work and 12 hours of television into helpful soundbites explaining what the documentary means to them and to the country.

Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, co-directors of PBS' "The American Revolution."

"I think people would accept that the American Revolution created American independence, it united the states, and it created a federal government that continues to this day," Schmidt says. "What I think they will be surprised to learn is that none of those were objectives at the start of the war. Nobody in April 1775 could have imagined the country that would emerge at the end of the war," he says, referencing the Battles of Lexington and Concord that opened the war.

The documentary particularly highlights how violent and bloody the revolution was, and not just during the parts we call a war. Historians inteviewed in the documentary explain, with gruesome specificity, the horrifically violent acts carried out in the name of the patriot cause, from tarring and feathering of British loyalists to pitched battles better thought of as massacres.

An image of the iconic painting "George Washington Crossing the Delaware" by Emanuel Leutze in 1851. It's one of the many historical images used in Ken Burns' "The American Revolution."

"Americans think of it as just what's going on inside" buildings like Independence Hall, Burns says, referencing the meetings of men in wigs and knee socks signing important documents that often make up picture of the revolution in our collective minds. "But they have to remember it's a bloody revolution."

"The United States came out of violence," Schmidt says. "A war is a war. But I think we all have to break in our own understanding of the Revolution. Because we think about it as one thing, but it was so many things."

Will viewers see 'The American Revolution' as political and biased?

America is approaching its 250th anniversary as a nation and our politics and national conversation have perhaps never been so chaotic, fraught and divided. Debates rage about how to teach and talk about the history of the country, often through politically charged lenses. Some might look at a network like PBS, recently defunded by Congress, airing this documentary right now as a political act. But the filmmakers disagree entirely.

"We're not living in a silo where we don't understand that there's lots going on," Botstein says. But "this is a story for everybody," Burns says. "I've said the exact same thing to Joe Rogan, to inner city high school students in Detroit, to the editorial board of the New York Times. ... Knowing our origin story gives us a chance to come together and realize how much we share in common."

"It's not inherently political," Schmidt agrees. "That's not what we were trying to do here. We were just trying to tell a story."

Burns doesn't see the story as political, but he does see it as deeply emotional and affecting.

"Our job is to be emotional archaeologists," Burns says. "We're not excavating the dry dates and facts. There's no quiz. But there are feelings, and there are human lives involved, and that's what we want to communicate."

The Osbourne family is opening up about their grief over the death of Ozzy Osbourne.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the family released their first episode of their podcast, The Osbournes in more than a year, specifically to honor Ozzy's life and legacy.

Sharon Osbourne, Jack Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne recorded their emotional episode sitting around a large wooden table covered in magazines featuring the Black Sabbath singer.

Ozzy died in July at the age of 76. His official cause of death was a heart attack, but the legendary rock musician had suffered a series of medical complications and struggles in the final years of his life, including being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

"I never realized just how horrible grief is. I never knew I was capable of loving somebody so much and missing somebody so much," Kelly, 41, said through tears. "I just, I never thought there'd be a day where he wouldn't be here."

Sharon, 73, then asked, "But then how blessed are you to have had a dad like him?"

Sharon, who was married to Ozzy for 43 years, described her own personal struggles as coming in "waves."

"I hate going to bed at night," she admitted, noting that she struggles sleeping alone.

"I mean, I slept with you for the first two months so that you weren't on your own," Kelly shared. "But then I felt like you needed some space."

Kelly also shared that some of her most challenging times are in the mornings.

"I wake up and for the first three seconds I feel normal," she shared. "And then I remember everything. Mornings are the hardest for me. What is the morning? Because it happened in the morning. And I used to spend most of my time with Dad in the morning."

She admitted that her dad would "hate" to see her crying, adding, "But it's just all I seem to find myself doing these days because I miss him so much."

The TV personality added that her 3-year-old son, Sidney has helped her to get through this difficult time.

"I'm just so grateful that Sidney got to meet him," she said of her father. "And that they had such a special little relationship."

"If it wasn't for my baby boy…" Kelly began before trailing off, with Jack, who is a father of four agreeing, "Having the kids has been a huge help."

Jack, 40, shared his own grief journey, saying, "It is both horrible and beautiful in the way that it forces you to unpack and examine things. Like, yeah, it sucks that he's gone, but also, for me, it has led to a huge amount of gratitude and love and like really cherishing moments that at the time you take for granted."

The family all agreed that seeing the public display of grief and love around Ozzy's death had been helpful and touching.

"The outpouring of love has been so helpful to us," Kelly said. "I never could have even imagined it to be as helpful as it has been to know that we're not alone in our grief, in our sadness and that the rest of the world loved him as much as we did…I haven't seen an outpouring like that since Princess Diana died. I didn't expect it."

Sharon noted that her late husband would have been blown away by the response to his death.

"Ozzy, he wouldn't believe it. He wouldn't," she said. "He didn't realize how much he was loved and that was his beauty because he never took it for granted from anyone. He never took it for granted I'm this, I'm that. He had no idea."

"Dancing with the Stars" marked 20 years of toe-tapping fun Tuesday night with a shock elimination, a fan favorite judge back in his seat and a royal cameo.

As the reality competition celebrated two decades on the air, stars of one of its most popular seasons yet spared no sweat. Several ballroom dancing pros from the inaugural "DWTS" season returned to dance an opening number and Tom Bergeron, a one-time judge on the ABC show, was back to dole out scores for the first time in five years.

Scrambling the format to honor the occasion, each of the remaining couples from Season 34 performed one dance set to the same song as a past "DWTS" freestyle routine, and one dance which paired the current celebrity contestant with a former mirrorball champion.

"Dancing with the Stars" Season 34 is almost here! But before we see Hilaria Baldwin, "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" star Jen Affleck, "Boy Meets World" actress Danielle Fishel and more grace the stage in hopes of taking home the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy, let's revisit the past winners. "DWTS" Season 33 saw Bachelor Nation's Joey Graziadei take home the winning trophy with dancing partner Jenna Johnson. Scroll through for more.

Prince William makes 'Dancing with the Stars' cameo with Robert Irwin

Robert Irwin has been riding a high all season. Irwin, the youngest child of late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin, has fast become a fan favorite, charming viewers with his affable temperament and his surprisingly sharp dance moves.

The Nov. 11 show was no different. He and partner Witney Carson nabbed the season's first perfect individual score, dancing to "Footprints in the Sand" by Leona Lewis in tribute to their father, the same tune older sister Bindi Irwin used as her freestyle song when she competed in 2015.

Robert Irwin and Witney Carson on Sept. 5, 2025, in West Hollywood, California, ahead of the "Dancing with the Stars" season premiere.

'Dancing with the Stars' births countless 'showmances.' That's by design

Irwin also got a special boost from Prince William, who sent a video message to the contestant with whom he has teamed up for environmental efforts.

"We're missing you, Robert," William said in the video. "Whilst your twinkle toes are going off elsewhere, I need you down here." William then told Carson, "You need to get him in as much glitter as you can."

Who went home last night on 'Dancing with the Stars?'

After defying the odds, it was finally time for the "fandys" to bid their season fav adieu.

Andy Richter and his partner Emma Slater were eliminated during the Nov. 11 episode, scoring 29/40 for their individual dance.

Netflix's "Being Eddie" documentary offers viewers "a really genuine, little glimpse of me, for real," Eddie Murphy tells USA TODAY.

The Oscar nominee compares the experience of sitting for director Angus Wall's film (streaming Nov. 12) to "going through an old photo album with everybody." The 1 hour and 43-minute documentary − which includes interviews with Dave Chappelle, Pete Davidson, Jamie Foxx, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, Tracee Ellis Ross and Jerry Seinfeld – shows the first spark of Murphy's career: a ventriloquist doll that served as the perfect vehicle for his animated voices.

Television captivated Murphy from a young age.

"As a kid, I'd get a blanket, go throw it over the dining room table, so it was hanging down like a tent, put the TV under there, and I'd watch all day long," Murphy says in "Being Eddie." He remembers, years later, the days of "trying to roll around like Elvis" in leather suits while performing stand-up and relives his box office hits and misses.

Here are the most notable moments from the documentary:

Eddie Murphy loathes funerals. His plan to spare loved ones 'that trauma' after his death.

Eddie Murphy reflects on more than four decades in showbiz in "Being Eddie," streaming Nov. 12 on Netflix.'I was hurt': Eddie Murphy explains why he avoided 'SNL' and decided to return

Murphy joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" in 1980, at 19. He left in 1984 to pursue movies, but not every one hit. 1995's "Vampire in Brooklyn" got him "a little off-track," Murphy can admit. But it still stung when David Spade included Murphy in his sharp-tongued "SNL" bit "Hollywood Minute."

With a photo of Murphy on the screen, Spade jabbed, "Look, children, it's a falling star. Make a wish." The audience groaned, and Murphy admits, "I was hurt."

"It's like your alma mater taking a shot at you," he says. He believes a similar joke about an "SNL" cast member's career wouldn't fly today.

"The joke had went through all of those channels that a joke has to go through" to get on the air, Murphy says. "That's what y'all think of me? … And that's why I didn't go back for years."

Eventually, he decided the show could be an opportunity to highlight his talents. He returned to host it in 2019.

"That little friction that I had with 'SNL' was 35 years ago. I don't have no smoke with no David Spade," he says. "It was like, 'Hey, let me go to 'SNL' and smooth that all out.' And I did."

Eddie Murphy reveals thoughts on the 2007 Oscars: I could've 'lost at home'

Murphy believes that his poorly received comedy "Norbit," released in the final days of voting, muddied his path to the Oscar stage laid in "Dreamgirls." Alan Arkin took home the best supporting actor Oscar for his performance in "Little Miss Sunshine." The loss, Murphy says, is not what irked him, though he left the show after the award was announced.

"I would usually not go to award shows," Murphy says in "Being Eddie." "I'm like, 'These motherf------ made me come all the way down. I could've f------ lost at home.'"

"I'm never like, 'Oh, I didn't win.' I'm like, 'Hey! Don't make me come down here for nothing.' It's always wonderful to win stuff. But if I don't win ... I'm still Eddie in the morning."

Why Eddie Murphy avoids awards shows: 'Everybody's dressed and acting and fake'

Eddie Murphy at the 79th Academy Awards on Feb. 25, 2007, in Hollywood.Eddie Murphy wonders if Yul Brynner propositioned him on his birthday at Studio 54

Murphy rang in his 21st birthday at New York's famed Studio 54.

"Yul Brynner, from 'The Ten Commandments,' he was with his wife (Kathy Lee Brynner), and he was like, "How would you like to go back to my apartment with my wife and I and party?' " Murphy recalls. "And I was like, 'Nah, I'm cool.' "

Murphy says with age, he's begun to wonder if it was an invitation to dally with Kathy while Brynner watched.

"And now I wish I would've went," Murphy says, because it would've made for a better story.

USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for the Brynner family for comment.

Yul Brynner at 1958 interview in Paris.Eddie Murphy didn't plan to walk away from stand-up: 'It just kind of gradually stopped'

Murphy reveals he never made a conscious decision to leave the stand-up stage.

"It just kind of gradually stopped," he says. "I do know that it stopped being as much fun, and that's why I stopped going to the clubs like I used to."

He resented stories and critiques that would follow a set, polished or not. "If I would go up at a club, the next day it would be in the paper that I was at a club and what I was talking about, and they'd be critiquing it already, and it'd be like a little piece of an idea," he says. "And I remember I didn't like that feeling, so I stopped working out as much … before we knew it, decades had gone by."

And when he catches bits of his stand-up shows, "Eddie Murphy Delirious" (1983) and "Eddie Murphy Raw" (1987), he says, "It feels like a different person," as with time we all evolve.

Eddie Murphy avoided hard drugs: 'I wasn't even curious'

Murphy says when he would party with "Super Freak" singer Rick James in the '80s, he would leave before people started doing drugs. "I was never curious about it," Murphy says. "I never wanted to go in there and check it out or nothing. I just wasn't with it."

During his first season of "SNL," Murphy says he accompanied John Belushi and Robin Williams to a blues bar.

"They put some blow on the table, and I'm standing there (between) two heroes," Murphy says. "I wasn't even curious. I was just not with it. I've never even tried cocaine or touched cocaine ... I don't drink. I don't smoke cigarettes."

Murphy says he was 30 before he smoked his first joint.
