*The Mummy*, Stephen Sommers' rip-roaring reboot of the 1932 Boris Karloff classic, turned star Brendan Fraser into an action hero upon its release in 1999.

The horror-comedy-action hybrid wasn't a sure bet. The resurrection of the Universal monster franchise toiled in development hell for decades, with genre icons like George Romero and Clive Barker attached at various points.

The studio wanted a low-budget horror flick, but Sommers pitched a swashbuckling, *Indiana Jones*-inspired take on the creature feature. The rest is ancient history. "I've always wanted to do a version of *The Mummy*," he ** on its 20th anniversary. "I heard they'd parted ways with another writer-director… One of the first things I said was 'Nobody wants to see a guy wrapped in bandages; they're going to laugh at it.'"

History proved him right. The film earned over $400 million worldwide and received an Oscar nomination for visual effects. In the years since, there have been two sequels, a spinoff franchise, and a Tom Cruise-led reboot.

Now, a new *Mummy* movie with Fraser and costar Rachel Weisz is in the works with Radio Silence, the filmmaking team behind horror hits *Ready or Not* (2019) and *Scream VI* (2023). As we wait to see how that project takes shape, let's have a look at what the cast of *The Mummy* has been up to over the past 25 years.

Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell

Brendan Fraser played the dashing hero Rick O'Connell, a treasure hunter and former Captain of the French Foreign Legion.

"We didn't know whether we were making a horror movie, we didn't know if this was an action picture, we didn't know if it was a romance picture," he previously told EW. "All of the above? None of the above? We didn't know. We. Did. Not. Know."

The actor rose to prominence in the early '90s, standing out in *Encino Man *(1992), *School Ties *(1992), and *Airheads *(1994) before swinging into theaters as *George of the Jungle *(1997) and finding critical acclaim in *Gods and Monsters *(1998).

Fraser was bedeviled by Elizabeth Hurley's Beelzebub in *Bedazzled *(2000), earned career-best reviews for the Vietnam drama *The Quiet American *(2002), and landed a role in the Best Picture-winning *Crash *(2004). Injuries from his years of stunt work required surgeries that curbed his action star status, but he found regular TV work, including *Trust *(2018) and *Doom Patrol *(2019–2023).

His road back to big-screen glory began in Steven Soderbergh's heist movie *No Sudden Move *(2021) and led to his Oscar-winning turn in *The Whale *(2022) and a memorable role in Martin Scorsese's *Killers of the Flower Moon *(2023).

Upcoming projects include Hikari's *Rental Family,* a festival favorite, and the historical war drama *Pressure*, in which he plays Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Fraser was married to actress Afton Smith, with whom he shares three sons, from 1998 to 2009. He has been in a relationship with makeup artist Jeanne Moore since 2022.

Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan

Rachel Weisz played bookworm turned mummy slayer Evelyn Carnahan.

The English actress impressed for years on stage and across the arthouse circuit before grabbing the attention of Imhotep — and mainstream audiences — in *The Mummy*.

"It was the '90s and a lot of the women's parts were not very interesting," she told *Newsweek*. "[Evie] was just a very unusual female character. She was a librarian, and she was in the middle of this action movie. She was funny and kind of mischievous and honest."

That role launched one of the most celebrated screen careers in recent history. Weisz showed off her range in everything from the rom-com *About a Boy *(2002) to the dark graphic novel adaptation *Constantine *(2005) before winning an Oscar for *The Constant Gardener *(2005).

After starring in *The Fountain *(2006) — her then-fiancee Darren Aronofsky's interlocking triptych about conquering death — she stole every scene in Rian Johnson's *The Brothers Bloom *(2008), and continued cycling between big-budget dramas, such as *The Lovely Bones* (2009), and more intimate ones like *The Deep Blue Sea *(2011).

The international star landed on Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos' radar for his absurdist comedy *The Lobster *(2015); the two reunited for *The Favourite *(2018), where her acerbic performance landed her another Oscar nod.

No stranger to blockbusters with *The Bourne Legacy *(2012) and *Oz the Great and Powerful *(2013) on her résumé, Weisz joined the MCU for a villainous role in *Black Widow *(2021). Most recently, she stepped into Jeremy Irons' scrubs as identical twin gynecologists in the gender-swapped miniseries remake of *Dead Ringers *(2023).

She and Aronofsky were engaged for several years and share a son, Henry. In 2011, she married Daniel Craig, and in 2018 the couple welcomed a daughter. In 2013, the two actors shared the stage in *Betrayal*, Weisz's Broadway debut.

Scottish actor John Hannah was Evelyn's troublemaking brother Jonathan.

Before unraveling the Mummy, he stole the hearts of audiences with his breakout performance as Matthew in *Four Weddings and a Funeral *(1994), for which he earned a BAFTA nomination, and as Gwyneth Paltrow's love interest in *Sliding Doors *(1998).

"I struggled a bit doing *The Mummy* at first," he told EW in 2019. "I was like, 'I don't understand what I'm doing here!' Brendan's the hero, and Kevin J. was doing the comedy stuff. I'm like, 'Steve, what's my function?' He said, 'Just mess around in the background, and if it's funny, we'll cover it.'"

Hannah starred alongside Denzel Washington in the biopic *The Hurricane *(1999) before reprising Jonathan in *The Mummy Returns *(2001)*. *In the years since, he's found a consistent home on the small screen, playing key roles in the *Spartacus *franchise, *Damages* (2012), and *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. *(2016–2017). He recently guest starred on HBO's hit *The Last of Us *(2023).

Hannah wed his *Sliding Doors *costar Joanna Roth in 1996. They have two children.

Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep

Arnold Vosloo was Imhotep, the cursed mummy who returns from the tomb in search of his lost love.

"They go, 'All right, here's your wardrobe.' It's, like, a G-string. I liked my beers; I had a bit of a paunch — still do," Vosloo previously told EW. "Steve told me afterwards that the wardrobe master said, 'We've got a problem. We've got a fat Mummy!' So in Morocco I was just running and walking and eating whatever it is they make you eat to lose weight."

Before playing the classic villain, Vosloo was a celebrated film, television, and theater actor in his native South Africa. He made his stateside debut in the cult sword-and-sorcery adventure *Gor *(1987) and hunted Jean-Claude Van Damme in John Woo's *Hard Target *(1993).

After his defeat in *The Mummy *movies*, *he menaced *Agent Cody Banks *(2003), costarred with Leonardo DiCaprio in *Blood Diamond *(2006), and shored up his bad-guy bonafides as Cobra agent Zartan in *G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra *(2009) and *G.I. Joe: Retaliation *(2013). His TV work has included *24 *(2005), *Bosch *(2017), and *Jack Ryan *(2019).

Vosloo was married to actress Nancy Mulford from 1988 to 1991. He wed marketing director Silvia Ahi in 1998.

Kevin J. O'Connor was the disloyal thief Beni Gabor, whose greed gets the best of him.

As he told EW in 2019, making the film was its own adventure: "You'd see one little black cloud and you'd think, 'What is this?' This little black cloud would turn into a sandstorm that was blinding and threw the camera equipment around. It was insane… I chose to wear open-toed sandals for my character. After my first night, I realized how wrong I was. I would look down and see something moving in the sand."

O'Connor was already a well-established character actor, with *Peggy Sue Got Married *(1986), *Steel Magnolias *(1989), *Amistad *(1997), and *Tanner '88 *(1988) under his belt. After getting eaten alive by scarabs in *The Mummy*, he served as the diabolical lab assistant Igor in Sommers' *Van Helsing *(2004), then faced a different kind of monster in Paul Thomas Anderson's *There Will Be Blood *(2007). He joined Patrick Swayze for his final performance in the series *The Beast *(2009) and reunited with Anderson for *The Master *(2012).

The Windy City native was a recurring player on *Chicago P.D. *(2014–2015) as well as the Stephen King miniseries *11.22.63 *(2016). In recent years, he has popped up in *Widows *(2018), *Catch-22 *(2019), and the Kirsten Dunst-led series *On Becoming a God in Central Florida *(2019).

Veteran screen presence Jonathan Hyde brought the film's resident Egyptologist, Dr. Allen Chamberlain, to life.

The Australian character actor was best known to Americans as the trustworthy butler in *Richie Rich *(1994), in dual roles in *Jumanji *(1995), and as the historically infamous J. Bruce Ismay in *Titanic *(1997).

Modern audiences may recognize him from Guillermo del Toro's vampire series *The Strain *(2014–2017); he reunited with the genre maestro for the Gothic chiller *Crimson Peak *(2015). Recently Hyde appeared, ironically enough, in *Dr. Jekyll *(2023) with Eddie Izzard, and guest starred as the Duke of Norfolk on *The Crown *(2023).

Most recently, Hyde appeared in Brady Corbet's Oscar-winning *The Brutalist* (2024).

Hyde wed opera singer Isobel Buchanan in 1980 and they have two children. Their daughter, Georgia King, is also an actor.

Oded Fehr was Ardeth Bay, leader of the sacred guards tasked with protecting the City of the Dead.

"We had no idea when we shot the first *Mummy *that it's going to be what it ended up being… I heard Rachel going, 'This is the end of my career,'" he said on *Popverse'*s *Mummy *cast reunion panel. "I was just happy to be there, you know… for me it was my first job."

After *The Mummy Returns, *he faced off with the undead again in *Resident Evil: Apocalypse *(2004) and played the villain Zankou on *Charmed *(2004–2005). Fehr co-headlined Showtime's *Sleeper Cell *(2005–2006) and landed roles on *NCIS *(2013), *Once Upon a Time *(2016–2017) *The Blacklist *(2015–2019), and *Star Trek: Discovery *(2020–2024).

The Israeli actor will return to the Final Frontier for the spin-off *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.*

Fehr and Rhonda Tollefson have been married since 2000 and have three children.

Erick Avari played Dr. Terence Bey, curator of the Cairo Museum of Antiquities.

A two-decade veteran of stage and screen*, *he already had an extensive résumé, including the *Seinfeld *(1989) pilot and supporting turns in *Stargate *(1994), *Independence Day *(1996), and Fraser's *Encino Man.*

The actor mentioned on a podcast in 2015 that his role changed at the last minute: "I was originally cast in the role Jonathan Hyde played and Omar Sharif was set to play the curator, but two weeks before the shoot, they called to say Omar had emergency hip surgery and so they were bumping me up to the role of the curator."

Avari played a human in Tim Burton's *Planet of the Apes *(2001) and the billionaire businessman father of Jennifer Garner's Elektra in *Daredevil *(2003).

He subsequently settled in on the small screen, booking parts in *Heroes *(2006), *Days of Our Lives *(2009), and *The Brink *(2017). The actor has remained mostly retired since the first season of faith-based drama *The Chosen *(2019).

Avari and his wife, Margaret Walker, have been married since 1980.

Bernard Fox portrayed the overzealous fighter pilot Captain Winston Havelock.

The Welsh actor became a sitcom stalwart in the '60s, appearing on everything from *The Andy Griffith Show *(1963–1965) to *Hogan's Heroes *(1965–1970). While he remains most noteworthy for his sitcom work, he also holds a unique big-screen distinction: He appeared in two films based on the sinking of the *Titanic*, both *A Night to Remember *(1958) and the ship's eponymous 1997 blockbuster.

*The Mummy *was one of his last acting roles, but he went out with yet another bit of déjà vu, reprising his recurring character from *Bewitched *(1966–1972) on the supernatural soap opera *Passions *(1999–2000).

Fox died of heart failure in 2016 at age 89. He and his wife, Jacqueline, were married for over 50 years and had two children.

Patricia Velásquez was Imhotep's gold-painted lover, the Pharaoh's bride-to-be Anck-su-namun.

"It took almost 10 hours to get that makeup on," she said in 2024. "I have four people drawing on my body, and then they had a special chair so I could sit and the paint would not smear… I had anywhere between two to four hours of retouching every day. It was tough."

After an expanded role in *The Mummy Returns, *Velásquez showed off her comedic chops as Marta on *Arrested Development *(2003–2004) and guested on *Rescue Me *(2004) and *The L Word* (2008). The Venezuelan actress recently appeared in the horror films *The Curse of La Llorona *(2019) and *Malignant *(2021).

Off-screen, she has been honored for her philanthropy, having created the Wayuu Taya Foundation to assist the indigenous Wayuu people of Venezuela and Colombia. The United Nations appointed her the UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2003.

Velásquez has a daughter, Maya, and is in a relationship with businesswoman Alison Lawton.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the trailer for the new Hulu comedy special Sebastian Maniscalco: It Ain't Right

The one-hour show takes place at the stand-up comic's Chicago stop for his current tour of the same name

It premieres on Friday, Nov. 21, as part of Hulu's "Hularious" lineup

Sebastian Maniscalco certainly knows how to work a crowd.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the comedian's upcoming stand-up special, It Ain't Right, ahead of its Nov. 21 premiere on Hulu. In the hour-long show, Maniscalco "goes all in on family chaos, aging and the little things that drive us all nuts."

The trailer begins with cheers from the bustling crowd as Maniscalco, 52, takes over the sold out United Center arena in his hometown of Chicago, arriving on a red Vespa. Once on stage, he uses the opportunity to poke fun at himself, revealing one of his slightly-unattractive sleeping habits.

"I have a mild case of sleep apnea," he explains. "This is where I'm at. I'm going to duct tape my mouth shut so I don't pass away in my sleep. If someone came to rob my house, they would look at me and go, 'Someone was already here. Let's go.' "

The Irishman actor also channels his self-deprecating humor with his next joke. "I went to a drug store today. I took out cash," he says. "By the way, you take out cash nowadays, it's like kryptonite. This kid was in his early 20s. He's like, 'What is that?' I said, 'It's money. It's used for goods and services.' "

Later, Maniscalco jokes about Jeff Bezos' arc from "a complete nerd" 30 years ago to being "ripped to shreds on his super yacht."

It Ain't Right is part of Hulu's "Hularious" lineup, and is written, performed and executive produced by Maniscalco. David Jammy, Lana Maniscalco, Chris Convy, Lindsay Goldfarb and Freddy Wexler also serve as executive producers, with Paul Dugdale as the director.

According to Billboard, Maniscalco's tour has broken box office records, selling 361,000 tickets for 30 shows in the first six months of 2025 and grossing $35.5 million. In September 2024, he also set the record for a comic performing the most consecutive nights — five — at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

This marks Maniscalco's seventh comedy special, following Sebastian Live (2009), What's Wrong with People? (2012), Aren't You Embarrassed? (2014), Why Would You Do That? (2016), Stay Hungry (2019) and Is It Me? (2022).

Jennifer Shepherd, a lifelong dressmaker, says creating her daughter's gown was "the privilege of my life"

The mother-daughter duo's creative bond has inspired thousands online to celebrate family traditions and craftsmanship

Under the warm backyard lights on her wedding day, Eloise Glover slipped into a silk gown that carried more than just memories — it carried three decades of her mother's love, stitched into every fold.

The dress wasn't bought from a boutique or borrowed from a bridal rack; it was the final masterpiece in a lifelong collaboration between mother and daughter, 31 years in the making.

When Glover posted her story to TikTok — a short video celebrating all the dresses her mother had sewn for her, from her baby bonnet to her wedding gown — the internet swooned. "My mum has been making me dresses for 31 years," she wrote in the now-viral clip, "and then she made my wedding dress."

For Glover, clothes have always meant connection. "My mum has been making dresses for me since I was born," Glover tells PEOPLE. "So naturally, we'd spoken about my wedding dress before — but as anyone who's been married knows, you never go with what you thought when you [would at] 14."

The wedding came together quickly after she and her partner bought a home and decided to host their ceremony in the backyard. "I was so excited I sent save-the-dates before we'd even settled," she says with a laugh. "And then I immediately called Mum."

That call sparked a months-long creative exchange across time zones. "She lives on the other side of the country in Western Australia, so the ideation process began with sending references back and forth," Glover says. "I was in LA for work and tried some designer gowns, but nothing quite felt like me."

Instead, she started with color and texture, not tradition. "I knew I didn't want pure white," Glover shares. "I wanted an organic texture."

Her mother knew exactly what that meant. She sourced silk, tested washes, and hand-stitched the bodice until it looked and felt right. "My mum hand-stitched for 48 hours just to achieve that exact look," Glover says. "By the end, we barely had to talk — we'd just look at each other and understand the problem."

Eloise Glover

Eloise and her mom

That quiet understanding had been years in the making. Long before the wedding gown, there were baby outfits, teen dresses and family-portrait ensembles — each one a reflection of their evolving bond.

"I think each of them represents how our relationship has changed," Glover says. "As a baby, it was all her — she made me giant hats to hide my bald head. By the time I was 16, I chose something dramatic and gothic, and my mum completely let me lead. Now with the wedding dress, it's become this real collaboration, the most harmonious version of us."

Jennifer Shepherd has been sewing since childhood, but Glover gave her art a purpose. As Glover grew, so did Shepherd's skill. "When Eloise was about 2 years old, I enrolled in a technical school to learn dressmaking at an industry level," she says. "It was a three-year course, and my final collection included a wedding gown — I never could've imagined then that decades later, I'd be making one for her."

For Glover, dress-making has always been their shared language. "My mum and I are at our purest form when she's stabbing me with pins and I'm pulling a face at a neckline," she says, laughing. "At the time, we were just us. It's only now, looking back, that I feel emotional — I'm so eternally grateful."

Their creative process is part design meeting, part sleepover. "We really do just have sleepovers and come up with ideas," Glover says. "A few white wines, a Pinterest board and a dream."

"Once we knew the vision for the texture and the shape of the bodice, it just came together," she explains. "A lot of it was talking and reacting more to ideas than visuals — it was more about a feeling than a silhouette."

That synergy shows up in every detail. "My mum's creative vision is all in her head," Glover says. "And so is mine. We just talk until it's right."

One fitting moment still makes her smile. "I had a Pinterest photo of a sleeve I liked and said, 'That's it,' " she remembers. "When Mum gave me the toile, I said, 'Double it.' I've always been the eccentric in this duo."

Shepherd laughs when hearing her daughter retell that story. "Eloise knows what she wants," she tells PEOPLE. "But that's what makes sewing for her such a joy. It's not just about fabric — it's about watching your child step into who they are."

Through every stage of life, their collaboration has been about more than clothes. "The dress was a journey that brought us closer together," Shepherd says softly. "There were many late nights discussing fabrics and styles and life."

Glover didn't see her completed wedding gown until six days before the ceremony. "I hadn't tried the finished garment until then," she says. "I felt calm, but when I saw Mum's relief, I started crying."

The two celebrated that fitting with champagne and laughter. "It wasn't just a dress," Glover says. "It was everything we'd built together."

Shepherd still tears up remembering the moment her daughter walked down the aisle. "Watching Eloise walk down the aisle was very emotional," she tells PEOPLE. "After all the discussions and fittings, it felt like every stitch had led to that."

Eloise Glover

The viral TikTok captured snippets of that legacy — Glover as a 1-year-old in a bonnet her mother made to hide her bald head, a teenager in a gothic-inspired ballgown and finally a bride in hand-textured silk. "Seeing those moments side by side made me realize just how lucky I am," Glover says. "People were sharing stories about their own moms, and it made me appreciate what we've built together."

"Growing up with Mum's craftsmanship taught me to value the time and emotion behind clothes," she tells PEOPLE. "It's made me appreciate that personal style isn't about trends, it's about intention."

Her mother's influence has shaped not just her wardrobe but her worldview. "I've seen both the fast fashion cycle and the artistry of considered design," she says. "Watching Mum create everything by hand taught me to value quality and longevity — she's made so many timeless pieces that I still adore."

Shepherd's creativity also modeled resilience. "I was a single parent when I went back to school for dressmaking," she recalls. "Balancing motherhood and study wasn't easy, but it gave me a career and a connection to Eloise that's lasted her whole life."

For all her accomplishments, Shepherd remains modest. "I wasn't sure she'd want me to make her wedding dress," she admits with a laugh. "When she asked, I was overjoyed but terrified — I just wanted her to be 100% happy."

Eloise and her mother, Jennifer

When Glover cried at her final fitting, Shepherd knew she'd succeeded. "That's when I knew it was perfect," she says. "Every bit of effort had been worth it." Glover smiles at her mother's humility. "That's not true," she says. "She's the most talented woman I know."

In the months since the video went viral, messages have poured in from people who see their own mothers in Shepherd. "It's made me so proud of her," Glover says. "She's so resilient, so creative — I aspire to be half the mum she is to me."

For Shepherd, the feeling is mutual. "Having a little girl gave me the opportunity to create to my heart's content," she says. "But watching her wear those creations — that's been the privilege of my life."

They play exes who share custody of their pet Merv, a dog who's apparently upset that they're no longer together

The sweet holiday-set movie streams on Prime Video on Wednesday, Dec. 10

Tis the season for rekindling romances — and Merv is the perfect movie to set the tone.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at director Jessica Swale's new romantic comedy starring Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox as Anna and Russ, exes who share custody of their adorable dog Merv.

But ever since Anna and Russ split, Merv hasn't been himself, and a veterinarian diagnoses him with a case of the blues.

To raise Merv's spirits, Russ decides to whisk him away from Boston to beach vacation in Florida — a trip that Anna promptly crashes.

Wilson Webb/Prime

Zooey Deschanel and Gus in 'Merv.'

"I loved the story of a couple breaking up but sharing a dog — and then having to reunite to cure their dog's melancholy. It just was such a funny concept," says Deschanel, 45.

Cox, 42, best known for Marvel Cinematic Universe projects like the Netflix series Daredevil, found himself in new, lighter territory. "Tonally, this movie is unlike anything I've done before so I relied on Zooey and Jess to guide me," he says.

Wilson Webb/Prime

Charlie Cox and Gus in 'Merv.'

"Working with Zooey, especially in this genre, was like a masterclass," he continues. "There are very few actors more accomplished than she is. I really tried to learn as much as i could from her and be as present as possible in the scenes."

They clearly pulled it off, as director Jessica Swale says the two (human) leads have amazing chemistry. "They're the perfect rom-com couple because they are both joyously funny and real. I'd cast them both again in a heartbeat," she says.

Prime

Gus in 'Merv'

And as for the pup who portrays Merv? "We combed the whole country, from checking starry 'show dogs' to local mutts sending in self-tapes — with a little help," notes Swale. "It was a real education, not only in what dogs can do, but in how to tell their story on camera- and how only certain dogs would work. We were lucky to find Gus, who plays Merv."

Cox and Deschanel were equally impressed.

Wilson Webb/Prime

Zooey Deschanel, Gus and Charlie Cox in 'Merv.'

"Gus has one of those faces that seems to smile at times and be sad at times," says Cox. "Obviously there are a lot of scenes when I would be talking to 'Merv' out loud and he would just look at me. It genuinely felt like he was actually listening to my words."

Deschanel calls Gus "very talented and was super fun to work with. He's a working dog so he's always paying attention, and professional. He's super smart and athletic and it was so fun to have a furry friend around."

Even though Merv is set during the holidays, Deschanel doesn't necessarily think of it as a Christmas movie a la her 2003 classic Elf. "It just has some Christmas elements that make sense for the story. It's of course a special time of year that often brings us together with family, so it is a good backdrop."

Merv streams on Prime Video in December.

Wondering what film to watch? The answer is written in the Starz. The platform has curated an impressive collection of the best films from the 20th and 21st centuries, and the only thing standing between you and a quality movie is a login screen.

Also struggling with decision-making fatigue? Don't sweat it — we here at EW have curated a list of our favorite features from nearly every genre. Here are the 14 best movies streaming on Starz.

The 40-Year-Old-Virgin (2005)

Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer in 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'

Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer in 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'. Suzanne Hanover/Universal

Judd Apatow's first cinematic directing project had the potential to fail on an epic scale. *The 40-Year-Old Virgin* — a movie about Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell), a retail employee whose co-workers decide to take charge of his love life after learning he never lost his virginity — could have been callous, shallow, and deeply unfunny. But while Apatow has no problem dabbling in broad comedy (see: the waxing scene), he refrains from punching down, presenting Andy as a man who is afraid to grow up, but enthusiastic about trying.

The cast is excellent from front to back, but it's Carell's earnest performance of Andy that made the film an instant classic. EW's critic at the time writes, "*The 40-Year-Old Virgin* is buoyantly clever and amusing, a comedy of horny embarrassment that has the inspiration to present a middle-aged virgin's dilemma as a projection of all our romantic anxieties." *—Ilana Gordon*

**Director: **Judd Apatow

**Cast: **Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Mann, Jane Lynch

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson in 'Charlie Wilson's War'

Mike Nichols put a bow on his illustrious directing career in 2007 with *Charlie Wilson's War*, a biographical comedy about Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks). A legislator more known for his partying than his policy, Wilson makes it his mission to covertly organize artillery support for Afghan rebels fighting the Soviet Union.

Aaron Sorkin wrote the script, which is set in 1980 during the Soviet-Afghan War, and Nichols packs his project with A-list talent, including Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hanks takes a detour from his traditional nice guy roles to sleaze it up as the hard-drinking, sweet-talking Wilson, and that alone is worth a watch. *—I.G.*

Dazed and Confused (1993)

During the summer of 1992, Richard Linklater gathered all the up-and-coming talent in young Hollywood and shipped them off to Texas to make a film about the last day of the 1976 school year. *Dazed and Confused *was the vehicle that launched Matthew McConaughey's career, but truthfully, his performance would have been lost without the movie's strong, mostly undiscovered ensemble.

Linklater used *Dazed and Confused *to continue developing his signature style — as seen in his first feature, *Slacker* (1990) — for making naturalistic movies crammed with contemporary dialogue, some of which was improvised by his cast. The film flopped upon release, but Linklater's ability to capture the nostalgia and hopefulness of this particular life period earned *Dazed and Confused* the third slot on EW's list of the 50 best high school movies. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Dazed and Confused*: Starz

**Director:** Richard Linklater

**Cast: **Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich, Rory Cochrane, Adam Goldberg, Cole Hauser, Parker Posey, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck

Definitely, Maybe (2008)

Ryan Reynolds as Will Hayes and Abigail Breslin as Maya Hayes in 'Definitely, Maybe'

*Definitely, Maybe* is the story of a man finding his soulmate, but the movie's strength lies in how well it rounds out the women from his past. Ryan Reynolds stars as Will Hayes, a young dad trying to figure out how to explain his divorce to his daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin). Riffing on *How I Met Your Mother*, which premiered three years earlier, Will tells Maya the story of how he met her mom — with some names and details changed.

Maya's quest to identify her mother in the story helps Will better understand his romantic past, and gives them both insight into where love is really leading him. The film distinguishes itself from the average rom-com thanks to the performances of Will's past loves, played by Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, and Isla Fisher. *—I.G.*

**EW grade:** B+

**Director:** Adam Brooks

Fruitvale Station (2013)

Ron Koeberer/TWC

*Fruitvale Station*, Ryan Coogler's feature directorial debut, also represents the beginning of his creative partnership with Michael B. Jordan. The duo's onscreen legacy — which includes the *Creed* and *Black Panther *franchises, and 2025's *Sinners* — begins on Dec. 31, 2008, in an Oakland train station. Jordan plays Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old father who was killed by BART Police on New Year's Day 2009, after defending himself in a fight on a train; the film chronicles the last day of his life.

Grant's real-life death was one of the many instances of police brutality that precipitated the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the film premiered the same year BLM was founded. Coogler's work helped further the cause, with EW's review stating, "He puts us in touch with the full, wrenching humanity — the moral horror — of the crime as if we were seeing it for the first time." *—I.G.***** Where to watch *Fruitvale Station*: Starz**

**EW grade: **A**

**Director: **Ryan Coogler**

**Cast:** Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Kevin Durand, Chad Michael Murray

Hustlers (2019)

Constance Wu as Destiny in 'Hustlers'

Constance Wu as Destiny in 'Hustlers'. STX Entertainment

The 2008 financial crisis does not make for a sexy subject, but writer-director Lorene Scafaria's adaptation of a 2015 *New York Magazine* article about a group of strippers who drugged and robbed stock traders turned the crash into the year's sultriest criminal comedy. Led by Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), a veteran stripper who folds men like origami, the crew's scheme is explained when a journalist (Julia Stiles) tracks down one of Ramona's former acolytes (Constance Wu) in the hopes of extracting the story.

Lopez is mesmerizing as Ramona, a force of a woman who sees her financial revenge scheme as a modern-day Robin Hood story. EW's critic writes, "Lopez (who seems to hold the center of every scene she's in) and Wu bring a soulfulness and desperation to their roles that defy easy profiling." *—I.G.*

King Kong (2005)

Adrien Brody as Jack Driscoll in 'King Kong'

Adrien Brody as Jack Driscoll in 'King Kong'. Universal/Everett

The Eighth Wonder of the World comes alive as never before in Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 version of* King Kong*. Set during the Great Depression, the 2005 adaptation stars Jack Black as a filmmaker with duplicitous intentions, Naomi Watts as his unwitting leading lady, and Adrien Brody as the screenwriter who falls in love with her.

Still at the height of his motion capture era, Andy Serkis — who also portrayed Gollum in *The Lord of the Rings* — endows Kong with a depth and sensitivity not expected from the world's most feared gorilla. The eighth cinematic addition to the *King Kong* universe, a critic writing for EW calls it a "very human tale of compassion, greed, loss, bravery, creativity, foolishness, and love." *—I.G.*

Where to watch *King Kong*: Starz

**EW grade:** A

**Director: **Peter Jackson

**Cast: **Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody, Thomas Kretschmann, Colin Hanks, Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis

Looper (2012)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe in 'Looper'

Alan Markfield/TriStar Pictures/Everett

This futuristic sci-fi thriller from writer-director Rian Johnson is a mind-bender in the best of ways. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is an assassin working for an innovative crime syndicate that uses time travel to avoid detection by sending their targets into the past (Joe's present) to be killed. When killers such as Joe outlive their usefulness, the company sends their future selves back into the present to be killed by their younger selves.

Such is the predicament for Joe, when his older self (Bruce Willis) tries to avoid this fate. It's a heady concept, but Johnson develops the film's world and its unique set of rules in such a detailed, entertaining fashion that you won't be left frustrated. *—Kevin Jacobsen*

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'.

Keith Bernstein

It's impossible for anyone to fully capture Nelson Mandela's impact, and the biggest issue in *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom* is that the film tried. Released only a few months before the activist's death at the age of 95 in December of 2013, *Mandela *is a comprehensive remembering of his story, starting with his political awakening and incarceration, and ending with his rise to power as South Africa's president in a postapartheid world.

Idris Elba doesn't look like Mandela, but he doesn't need to: His towering performance captures the former president's spirit and convictions. Released around the same time as *12 Years a Slave*, *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom *doesn't pack the same emotional punch, but it remains an important biography of a once-in-a-lifetime leader. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom*: Starz

**Director: **Justin Chadwick

**Cast: **Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Jamie Bartlett, Terry Pheto, Deon Lotz

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in 'Mission: Impossible'

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in 'Mission: Impossible'.

Ethan Hunt is America's answer to James Bond. In the '60s and '70s, CBS series *Mission: Impossible* followed U.S. undercover officers as they engaged in top-secret operations. Under Brian De Palma's cinematic direction, the spy work goes high-tech and high impact. Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, a member of the Impossible Missions Force, or IMF, whose mission is compromised when he is suspected of being an agency mole.

"*Mission: Impossible* is structured as a Rubik's Cube that keeps on twisting," writes EW's critic. The film is also the gift that keeps on giving: There are eight movies in the franchise, although *Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning* (2025) is allegedly Cruise's last. But, as in all *M:I *movies, it's possible this is just a misdirection and the IMF's work will continue with another lead agent. Either way, this streaming opportunity will self-destruct in five seconds. *—I.G.*

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Duane Jones as Ben in 'Night of the Living Dead'

We have *Night of the Living Dead* to thank for our modern idea of zombies and the many tropes attached to the subgenre. Legendary director George Romero was inspired by the 1954 novel *I Am Legend* for this independent horror classic, which centers the action on a farmhouse overrun by ravenous, undead "ghouls." The film's allusions to then-current events (as EW's critic writes, "flesh-eating zombies as a Vietnam-era metaphor for America devouring itself") just make it all the more resonant. *—K.J.*

Serendipity (2001)

When destiny has a sense of humor, we call it serendipity, which also happens to be the title of one of 2001's most beloved romantic comedies. A whirlwind New York love story, *Serendipity* stars Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack as two young city dwellers who meet and enjoy a magical night — only to decide to let fate control whether they end up together. As the years pass and their life paths diverge, it seems destiny has other plans for the would-be lovers, but New York City and a series of fortunate events may end up reuniting the pair after all.

A missed connections comedy featuring an excellent supporting cast and a screenplay that is more than willing to lean into all of the best tropes of the genre, *Serendipity* is fun, funny, and guaranteed to make you yearn for a holiday season spent in the Big Apple. *—I.G.*

Tom Holland's third solo Spider-Man movie, *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, ties up some loose ends and touches hearts while doing it. The film's actors and production team were vigilant about keeping spoilers under wraps, and almost five years later, it's still worth protecting some of the movie's most special moments. Suffice it to say that a number of characters return, fans and critics loved the film, and Holland continues to take impeccable care of Peter Parker during his Marvel tour of duty. EW's critic applauds the ending, writing "what seems at first like pure fan service turns out to be some of the best and by far the most meta stuff Marvel has done, tender and funny and a little bit devastating." *—I.G.*

Titanic (1997)

The tragic 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible proves, yet again, that the allure of the *Titanic* cannot be denied. The same can be said for James Cameron's cinematic adaptation of the infamous sinking, a three-hour epic that layers a fictional love story on top of a historical catastrophe, tracing the ship's trajectory from world-class vessel to its final resting place at the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Enriched by real-life characters and true accounts, Cameron's *Titanic* made Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet household names, revolutionized modern filmmaking, and launched a banger of a Céline Dion ballad. A tale of love and loss, classism and delusion, *Titanic* is more than worthy of the 11 Academy Awards it took home. The "Ship of Dreams" may never have made it to shore, but the film commemorating its doomed voyage deserves to be watched by any self-respecting romance fan.* —I.G.*
