NEW YORK (AP) — "Predator: Badlands" led all films in North American theaters with a debut of $40 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, a better-than-expected result that slightly lifted the box office from its autumn doldrums.

On the heels of the worst box office weekend of 2025, "Predator: Badlands" faced little competition from new titles. Not accounting for inflation, the $40 million opening marked a new high for the dreadlocked alien franchise, besting the $38.3 million launch of 2004's "Alien vs. Predator."

"Predator: Badlands," written and directed by Dan Trachtenberg, collected another $40 million overseas for the Walt Disney Co.'s 20th Century Studios. A key factor for "Predator: Badlands" is that, with a budget of $105 million, it's also the most expensive "Predator" film.

"Badlands," the eighth movie in the franchise that began with 1987's "Predator," offers a novel twist for the sci-fi series. On a remote planet, a young, outcast predator (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) encounters an android researcher (Elle Fanning), and the two set off on a journey. Reviews (85% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) have been good. Moviegoers gave it an "A-" CinemaScore.

Good news had lately been hard to find in movie theaters. On Wednesday, AMC Theaters, the largest theater chain, posted a $298.2 million quarterly loss, partly due to a less-than-stellar summer season. But the fall has been worse. Last month was the lowest-grossing October in nearly three decades. Few awards hopefuls have made much of a mark.

This weekend, a new wave hit theaters. But despite plenty of star power, most fell flat.

"Die My Love," starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, launched with $2.8 million from 1,983 theaters. The film, directed by Lynne Ramsay, stars Lawrence as a new mother and Pattinson as her husband. Mubi plunked down a reported $24 million for "Die My Love" after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Audience slammed it with a "D+" CinemaScore.

"Christy," starring Sydney Sweeney as the professional boxer Christy Martin, debuted with $1.3 million in 2,011 theaters. The film, the first one distributed by production company Black Bear Pictures, has earned Sweeney awards buzz since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Sony Pictures Classics' "Nuremberg," a post-World War II drama about the Nuremberg trials starring Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, managed to do a bit better. It opened with $4.1 million in 1,802 theaters.

It was slightly edged by the best performer of the newcomers: "Sarah's Oil." The Amazon MGM release opened with $4.5 million from 2,410 locations. It stars Naya Desir-Johnson as a young Black girl in the early 1900s who learns that her Oklahoma land allotment is rich with oil. "Sarah's Oil" scored a rare "A+" CinemaScore from ticket buyers.

Arguably the most promising of the prospective awards movies to open in theaters over the weekend was Neon's "Sentimental Value." The film, a prize-winner at Cannes, directed by Norwegian-Danish filmmaker Joachim Trier, has been tabbed as a major Oscar contender this year. The family drama's cast includes Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and, in her second movie of the weekend, Elle Fanning. It opened in four theaters with $200,000, giving it a $50,000 per-screen average. That's the third best of the year.

The debut of "Predator: Badlands" sealed the Walt Disney Co.'s fourth straight year of $4 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It also broke a short streak of disappointments for the studio, including "Tron: Ares" and "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere." With potentially two of the biggest box-office hits of the year still to come in "Zootopia 2" and "Avatar: Fire and Ash," Disney is poised to surpass $5 billion.

Top 10 movies by domestic box office

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:

1. "Predator: Badlands," $40 million.

2. "Regretting You," $7.1 million.

3. "Black Phone 2," $5.3 million.

4. "Sarah's Oil," $4.5 million.

5. "Nuremberg," $4.1 million.

6. "Chainsaw Man," $3.6 million.

7. "Bugonia," $3.5 million.

8. "Die My Love," $2.8 million.

9. "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere," $2.2 million.

10. "Tron: Ares," $1.8 million.

Jay Leno is sharing how he helps his wife, Mavis, after she was diagnosed with advanced dementia in April 2024.

While speaking with PEOPLE at the 34th Annual Love Ride on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Harley-Davidson of Glendale in California, the comedian, 75, opened up about taking care of Mavis, whom he married in 1980.

"I've been very lucky in my life. My wife is fighting dementia and all that, but it's not cancer. It's not a tumor, so I enjoy taking care of her," he says.

Jay continued to dispel a misconception about their relationship, saying, "It's not work, because people come up, and say they feel so sorry. I understand the sympathy, because I know a lot of people are going through it, but it's okay."

"I like taking care of her. I enjoy her company, and we have a good time. We have fun with it, and it is what it is," the former late-night host adds.

"There are going to be a couple of years that are tricky. So, the first 46, really great. But it's okay. It's not terrible. I'm not a woe-is-me person. I'm just lucky that I am able to take care of her," he says.

Jay then shared his gratitude for being in a position where he can afford to take care of his wife and her medical needs. "I'm very lucky," he acknowledges. "I enjoy her company. As soon as this ride's over, I'm going home and I'll make her lunch."

Jay is a grand marshal for Love Ride, which is Harley-Davidson's charity motorcycle ride. According to the event's website, it has raised over $25 million for charities since being founded in 1984.

In September, Jay told PEOPLE that even when he travels for work, he always makes sure he's home at night.

"I come home every day. I went to Puerto Rico for the day and [the] plane waited and I came right back," he said. "That's what I do. I try to be home every night. So that's kind [of] what I do."

In April 2024, the former television host was granted conservatorship of his wife. Mavis' lawyer said at the time that she was "in agreement" with the conservatorship and noted that she is "receiving excellent care with her husband, Mr. Leno."

Salt-N-Pepa has never dodged frankness.

Even at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, the hip-hop pioneers took a moment from celebrating to put the music industry on blast.

Cheryl "Salt" James, along with Sandra "Pepa" Denton and DJ Deidra "Spinderella" Roper, accepted the musical influence award at the ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 8, in Los Angeles.

But along with dedicating the honor to "every woman who picked up a mic when they told her she couldn't," James used her platform to reinforce the importance of artists owning their work.

"We had cassette tapes, turntables and dreams," James said, "And we are in a fight right now for our masters. After 40 years, as we celebrate this, kids can't even stream our music. It's been taken off every streaming platform because the industry still doesn't want to play fair."

But James added as she leaned into the microphone, "Salt-N-Pepa has never been afraid of a fight."

Sandra Denton (aka Pepa, from left), Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella) and Cheryl James (Salt) perform during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Peacock Theater on Nov. 8, 2025, in Los Angeles.

In May, Salt-N-Pepa sued Universal Music Group, the owner of their masters, saying the label is in violation of the Copyright Act of 1976, which allows musicians to reclaim control of their music after 35 years. The rap group alleges UMG has refused to relinquish ownership.

The New York-formed hip-hop triumvirate, eligible for induction since 2010, is the first female rap act to be installed in the Rock Hall.

Their speech followed a vivacious set including Roper/Spinderella, with whom they reunited in 2022 after a few years of legal wrangling about royalties.

En Vogue joined the party for their collective anthem, "Whatta Man," before Kid 'n Play arrived with their ankle-crossing dance to bounce with Salt-N-Pepa throughout the group's 1986 breakthrough, "Push It."

During her part of the acceptance speech, Roper, the first woman DJ to gain entry into the Rock Hall, pledged her allegiance to her fellow female turntable experts.

"I carry every female DJ who ever dared to dream. Every woman who touched a turntable and said, 'I can do that, too.' This is ours," Roper said. "Respect the DJ!"

The Grinch and Cindy-Lou Who… grunge fans?

Jim Carrey and his *How the Grinch Stole Christmas* costar Taylor Momsen showed off their hard-rock bona fides when they reunited at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this weekend to celebrate their mutual love for Seattle legends Soundgarden.

Carrey introduced them in a moving speech, while Momsen performed their 1992 song "Rusty Cage" with the band's remaining members and then joined several other special guests, including Brandi Carlile, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, for a rendition of their 1994 hit "Black Hole Sun."

Their participation in the tribute marked Carrey and Momsen's first time reuniting for big public outing in 25 years. They met on the set of *The Grinch*, in which the Carrey portrayed the titular Christmas-hating curmudgeon and the *Gossip Girl *actress played Cindy-Lou Who, the sweet little Whoville girl who helps open the Grinch's heart. The momentous occasion was timely, as Momsen recently recalled how she didn't know what Carrey actually looked like when they worked together because he was buried under a ton of prosthetic makeup.

During the Nov. 8 ceremony, Momsen, who was only 7 years old when she filmed *The Grinch*, shared some of her favorite memories of making the movie with PEOPLE, expressing how working with Carrey left a "lasting impact" on her.

"I just love that he was very protective of me," she said. "He was always very kind. And just the entire experience of filming *Grinch* and getting to know him so well, even in all the makeup, was just wonderful."

Carrey helped induct Soundgarden into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Lily Cornell Silver, the daughter of the group's late frontman, Chris Cornell. The rock star died by suicide in 2017 at the age of 52.**

In his remarks, the *Ace Ventura* actor praised Soundgarden for having "resurrected rock & roll for me" in the late 1980s and early '90s. He remembered how he felt watching them perform "Pretty Noose" during his first time hosting *Saturday Night Live, *adding that he requested them as the musical guests for that episode.

"I stood right in front of them, letting the waves of electricity wash over me like an audio baptism," Carrey recalled. "They pushed me under, and when I came up, I was free."

"We are aware of the allegation concerning Mike Smith dating back to 2017 and take such matters seriously," the statement read. "We recognize how difficult an allegation of this nature is for all involved. Out of respect for the legal process, we will not comment further on the case."

The statement announced that Smith has "stepped away" from his role as managing director at Trailer Park Boys Inc. and producer Gary Howsam will take over Smith's responsibilities.

*Trailer Park Boys* is a cult-favorite Canadian mockumentary series that follows the petty crimes of three trailer park residents: Ricky (Robb Wells), Julian (John Paul Tremblay), and Bubbles (Smith). The original show ran for seven seasons between 2001 and 2008 on the Canadian network Showcase. Wells, Tremblay, and Smith bought the rights to the series in 2013 and brought it to Netflix for five more seasons in 2014.

The most recent season of *Trailer Park Boys* aired in 2018, but its creators teased a comeback earlier this year. The 13th season wrapped in August and is expected to air on the show's own streaming platform, TPB+, in April 2026, reports *Deadline*. The new season will arrive in time for the series' 25th anniversary.

"We remain focused on delivering the long-awaited 13th season for our fans," Trailer Park Boys Incorporated announced in its statement.

Smith was arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery after an incident in a Los Angeles hotel room in 2016. The charges were later dropped due to a "lack of sufficient evidence," the CBC reported. Smith and the alleged victim had released a joint statement denying a domestic dispute had taken place.

Smith is expected to appear in court on Monday, Nov. 10.**

Maisie Richardson-Sellers is in new territory with *Talamasca: The Secret Order.*

Not only is AMC's Anne Rice TV series a completely new story not based on any of the author's books, but Richardson-Sellers is also getting to do something she's never done before in her career, despite making her name in multiple other supernatural TV universes including the Arrowverse and *The Vampire Diaries *spinoff* The Originals.*

"What I like about it is I'm playing a human, which is fun," Richardson-Sellers tells *.* "It's my first time being in that universe but not being the supernatural creature. I've been superheroes, I've been witches, vampires, stuck in witches' bodies, but I haven't been a human around them, and it does give you a heightened awareness of your mortality."

*Talamasca* is AMC's third TV show based on Rice's beloved *The Vampire Chronicles* book series, following *Interview With the Vampire *and* Mayfair Witches*. The new spinoff (airing Sundays on AMC and AMC+) explores the titular shadowy organization, featured in both existing shows and many of Rice's books, that tracks and controls vampires, witches, and other supernatural creatures around the world. Richardson-Sellers stars as ambitious and morally ambiguous Talamasca agent Olive, a master of disguise and handler to new recruit Guy (Nicholas Denton).

"Even though Olive's weapon is her brain, she's so smart and she's laser-focused on her mission, she's mortal, unlike the people that she's up against," the actor says. "It adds a new kind of danger and really raises the stakes for me as a performer and also within the world."

While the series follows vampires, witches, telepaths, and other supernatural beings, Richardson-Sellers loves how the world is still "grounded in reality."

"It feels to me like this is completely believable, this could happen," she explains. "These people could be living among us, the Talamasca could be operating. It's very relevant in a creepy way. It's contemporary, it's gritty, it's earthbound. It has that real classic spy-thriller suspense and mystique and mystery and high stakes, and yet there's a supernatural element to it, so it allows us to really go into the emotions and the vulnerabilities and the real nuance of human interaction whilst having the love that we do of vampires and otherworldly creatures and witches."

While Richardson-Sellers had almost no information about the role when she auditioned, she's thrilled with who Olive has turned out to be across the six-episode first season.

"It was one of those clandestine auditions where you don't really get much context, which I kind of love because you get to fill in the gaps for yourself," the actor says. "I knew that she was this Talamasca agent, very deft with information, and very much skilled in the old tradition of spycraft, be that disguises and going undercover and all that clandestine work. And then the rest, I was like, 'Okay, let's play.'"

Throughout the first three episodes, not much has been revealed about Olive. But Richardson-Sellers teases that much more will be revealed in the back half of the season.

"I love how she is a mystery," the actor says. "She's so multilayered and multifaceted, so you are constantly adjusting and learning throughout the whole season new sides of her personality and her motives. She's a lone wolf. She really exists within the gray. I think for her, there's no such thing as good and evil. It's all about her own personal moral compass, and she believes that is sharper and more accurate than any kind of global or institution's moral compass."

While she can't reveal much about the final three episodes, she says there is going to be a massive action scene that gave her chills during filming.

"There's this huge fight scene later in the season down by the docks, and there's about 50 witches and other people who are having this big fight," she says. "It was just so cool. I get to watch it from a bridge above, so I was looking down and I was like, 'Look at how much fun we have.' That was a really special, beautiful moment that was very sort of humbling when you look at the scale of things."

As for where the first season is heading in the finale, Richardson-Sellers warns that no one is safe... not even Olive.

"Everyone is at risk in this season," she teases. "There's really clever twists. You're constantly left playing catch up and trying to figure out who is good, who's bad, what does good even mean within this world, how do we define it, who can we trust? It's a real crescendo. It ramps up and it will leave you, I hope and believe, really gunning for a season 2. Everything is a perfect setup for the next chapter. And I think season 2, it's only going to get bigger and better."

- Kelly Ripa's ongoing war with Halloween continued in 2025.

- Ripa said an adult woman called her out for running out of candy this year.

- The talk show host previously took issue with "ingrate" children who complained about her candy.

Kelly Ripa's war with ungrateful Halloween holiday celebrators has waged into 2025.

The *Live With Kelly and Mark* talk show hostess seemingly hasn't known peace on the scariest day of the year for quite some time, but not because of ghosts and ghoulies plaguing her — but, rather, ungrateful neighbors who consistently complain about her Halloween candy.

Reminiscing on this year's battle with the locals, Ripa spoke about manning her New York City holiday station during Friday's festivities, which she said one woman attempted to ruin.

Tuesday's episode saw Ripa's husband, Mark Consuelos, inquire about how she held down the holiday fort in his absence.

"How'd that go? I wasn't there for that. Did you run out early?" Consuelos asked his spouse,

"We ran out of candy twice, and had to reorder on the fly," Ripa replied, before noting that the ordeal grew in intensity days after Halloween officially ended.

She continued, telling Consuelos, "Interestingly enough, yesterday a woman came up to me and sort of lodged a complaint that we ran out early. An adult woman!"

Ripa said the woman asked her, "What happened to your candy this year?" The TV star was surprised by the question, and pushed back, asking, "What do you mean?"

"She said, 'Well, you ran out,'" Ripa recounted. "I go, 'What time did you come?' She said, 'Around 8:30 at night.' I said, 'No, it's over then. You'll have to come earlier next year.'"

The *Live* audience chuckled at Ripa's recollection, with Consuelos maintaining that, if he was there, things might've gone a bit differently.

"I wish I would've received that complaint," Consuelos said, smiling, with his wife assuring him several times that she "received it well" and that he would've been pleased with how she handled it.

In past years, however, Ripa has called out neighborhood children for demanding more than what she had to offer their Halloween collections.

"I put two candy bars in each bag," Ripa said on the air in 2023. "I was tired of the ingrate children going, 'I don't like that candy bar. Can I have this candy bar?' This way, you get a bag, move on."

While Consuelos wasn't able to pass out candy, he and Ripa did celebrate the holiday together on Friday's Halloween episode, which saw the pair dress up in around 67 costumes, including outfits inspired by Labubus, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, and the Apple TV+ series *Severance*.********
