Ben Affleck's *Air* is the kind of quality mid-budget drama for adults that rarely gets made anymore. Centering on the dealmaking process between Nike and Michael Jordan for what would become their mega-popular Air Jordan shoe line, the film follows the various players involved, from talent scout Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) to Nike CEO Phil Knight (Affleck) to Jordan's protective mother Deloris (Viola Davis). The result is a fleet-footed flick full of entertaining performances; even though you already know the ending, the journey makes for a breezy ride. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

*The Big Sick* is a modern must-watch for fans of the golden age of rom-coms. Written by real-life couple Emily V. Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan) and Kumail Nanjiani (playing himself), the movie follows the early stages of their relationship amid a health crisis.

Both funny and deeply powerful, *The Big Sick *shows the reality of romance with a heartfelt love story that rings true. "The biggest challenge was just having to go back and think about a pretty traumatic point in our lives, and then try to make a comedy out of it," Nanjiani told EW in 2017. "We knew that we could make this funny, but we didn't want to kill the reality of it." —*Meg Walters*

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)

Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'

Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'.

Released in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic — on top of a turbulent presidential election — this sequel to 2006's breakout hit *Borat* offered comic relief during hard times. Sacha Baron Cohen reprises his role as Borat Sagdiyev, a journalist from Kazakhstan tasked with delivering a monkey as a peace offering to Vice President Mike Pence. His plans are soon thwarted when he discovers his 15-year-old daughter (whom he just found out about), Tutar (Maria Bakalova), has stowed away with him on his journey, resolving to offer her up in the monkey's place.

Using the same mockumentary format as the first film, Borat puts himself in increasingly precarious real-life situations, though Tutar proves no slouch, particularly in a revealing interview with Rudy Giuliani. *Borat* remains an acquired taste for some, but this sequel recaptures some of its predecessor's magic, with Bakalova's daring performance even earning her an Oscar nomination. —*K.J.*

Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)

Jillian Bell leads this charming comedy about a woman who is motivated to run in the New York City marathon after her doctor deems her overweight and unhealthy. Faced with way-too-high gym rates and struggling to pay rent, Brittany presses onward in her training and hopes to get by with a little help from friends. What may sound like a generic inspirational tale is, in execution, an honest journey to self-acceptance, with Bell delivering a refreshingly honest performance as a character worth rooting for.

As EW's critic writes, "She brings a real, messy humanity to Brittany that comedies hardly ever allow a lead character — let alone a non-impossibly-bodied female — to have." —*K.J.*

Catherine Called Birdy (2022)

Bella Ramsey as Birdy in 'Catherine Called Birdy'

Bella Ramsey as Birdy in 'Catherine Called Birdy'.

Alex Bailey/Prime Video

Between their high-profile stints on the HBO series *Game of Thrones* and *The Last of Us*, Bella Ramsey starred in this bright historical comedy, adapted from the beloved 1994 YA novel *Catherine, Called Birdy*. Ramsey plays Lady Catherine, or, as she prefers, "Birdy," a scrappy 14-year-old who must deal with unwanted suitors while striving to maintain her independence. Rejecting the traditional path of a noble young woman, Birdy is ahead of her time, plucky, rambunctious, and bursting with ideas.

EW's critic calls *Catherine Called Birdy* "a sly fairytale about a medieval tween that manages to be both cheeky and modern without losing its heart." —*K.J.*

Mike Faist as Art Donaldson, Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, and Josh O'Connor as Patrick Zweig in 'Challengers'

Mike Faist as Art Donaldson, Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, and Josh O'Connor as Patrick Zweig in 'Challengers'. Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures

Luca Guadagnino is one of the best directors working today who knows how to communicate desire and yearning in films such as *A Bigger Splash* (2015) and *Call Me by Your Name* (2017). This romantic dramedy is no exception, following three professional tennis players and their ever-evolving relationships with one another. When doubles partners Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) meet star player Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a messy love triangle is formed that changes the trajectory of each of their lives.

"*Challengers *is fresh, exhilarating, and energetic," writes EW's critic. "It pushes the boundaries of its devilishly fun packaging, exploring the power dynamics of sex, desire, and competition with a winking reminder that sometimes love is a zero-sum game." —*K.J.***

Writer-director Nia DaCosta makes one of 19th-century playwright Henrik Ibsen's most beloved plays, *Hedda Gabler*, fully urgent and relevant for a modern audience with this witty, sensual drama. Tessa Thompson stars as Hedda, an unsatisfied wife who sees an opportunity to advance her husband's career, and thus, secure their future. At a late-night party at their home, she uses her penchant for manipulation by toying with those around her, including a former flame (Nina Hoss), eventually realizing the cost of her actions. Anne Hathaway as Solène Marchand and Nicholas Galitzine as Hayes Campbell in 'The Idea of You'

Anne Hathaway as Solène Marchand and Nicholas Galitzine as Hayes Campbell in 'The Idea of You'.

Amazon Prime/Courtesy Everett Collection

*The Idea of You* isn't aspiring to be game-changing art, but it delivers well on its tried-and-true premise. The romantic dramedy, based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, stars Anne Hathaway as Solène, a divorced mother who stumbles into a meet-cute with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of a boy band. Naturally, their first interaction blossoms into an unexpected, secret romance, which threatens to change Solène's life forever.

What separates *The Idea of You* from other films of its ilk is its earnest investment in its characters and their chemistry. As EW's critic writes, "It's clear those behind *The Idea of You *hold a genuine affection and care for the story, rather than the ironic eye that a book like this could so easily invite from a lesser team." —*K.J.***

Late Night (2019)

Mindy Kaling as Molly Patel in 'Late Night'

In *Late Night*, Mindy Kaling plays a young writer who joins the ranks of legendary late-night host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) as a token diversity hire who's out to prove she belongs there by merit rather than to fill a quota. Sharp, witty, and women-led, this comedy has a refreshingly non-romantic take on the rom-com.

Of course, you can expect a little bit of love, but, for Kaling, bending the genre to focus on the two central women was always the goal. "The romance of the movie…is not the major part of the movie," she told EW in 2019. "It's not like I've done before in my other things because I obviously love romance so much, but it is an element of it." —*M.W.*

Amy Poehler's documentary explores the famous Hollywood comedy duo Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. This fascinating film features interviews and previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage of the two *I Love Lucy* stars, tracing the arc of their love story and coinciding careers. For Poehler, Ball is a personal inspiration. "Lucy and Desi are two outsiders who changed an entire industry," she told EW in 2022. This devastating family drama follows a grief-stricken man's journey to move on with his life. Casey Affleck stars as Lee Chandler, a handyman going through the motions of living until the death of his brother. He is surprised to learn that he's now the legal guardian of Patrick (Lucas Hedges), his teenage nephew who has no desire to move away from home to stay with his uncle. As Lee helps Patrick through the grief process of losing his father, we come to understand how a traumatic event in Lee's past led him to shut down emotionally.

Moving and shockingly funny, *Manchester by the Sea* rightfully won Oscars for writer-director Kenneth Lonergan's screenplay and Affleck's subtle masterclass performance. *—K.J.*

Mariama Diallo's *Master *sets the scene at the elitist Ancaster College, where Jasmine (Zoe Renee) navigates life as a young Black student in a predominantly white environment. What begins as microaggressions and underhanded racism soon becomes much more sinister as things take a thrilling twist. "*Master*'s ear and eye for real-world snubs grounds it in a viciousness that feels keenly lived," EW's critic praises. If you could have a conversation with your older self — or your younger self — what would you say? The cheekily titled dramedy *My Old Ass* literalizes this concept, centering on a teenage girl named Elliott (Maisy Stella) who goes on a mushroom trip during which her older self (Aubrey Plaza) suddenly appears. What could've been a silly gimmick is, in writer-director Megan Park's capable hands, a lovely coming-of-age story. One Night in Miami (2020)

Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X in 'One Night in Miami'

Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X in 'One Night in Miami'.

Patti Perret/Amazon Studios

This Oscar-nominated drama, directed by Regina King, recreates a motel-room meeting that took place in Miami on Feb. 25, 1964, between four of the most influential Black public figures of the midcentury: Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Cassius Clay (Eli Goree), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), and Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.). While the conversations in the film are fictionalized, screenwriter Kemp Powers (who adapted the script from his play of the same name) imagines the topics they would have discussed, particularly their respective roles as Black men navigating racial conflicts in 1960s America.

What may sound like a verbose exercise is made vibrant by King's deft direction. As EW's critic writes, "In extrapolating the mysteries of a night we'll never fully know, she finds something that may not be strictly true to lived history, but possibly even richer: a quintessentially American tale; profane, profound, and beautiful." —*K.J.*

Paterson (2016)

Adam Driver as Paterson in 'Paterson'

Adam Driver as Paterson in 'Paterson'. Mary Cybulsky

This quietly poetic slice-of-life film follows a week in the life of Paterson (Adam Driver), a bus driver who happens to work in the New Jersey city of the same name. After hearing the buzz of passengers and their daily observations, Paterson writes poems in a notebook, which his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), wants him to share with the world.

Driver delivers one of his most underrated performances as the curious, mild-mannered poet, proving to be a strong match for writer-director Jim Jarmusch's minimalist style. As EW's critic writes, "There's a hushed beauty to *Paterson* and Paterson that celebrates the way in which even the most ordinary, prosaic lives can be full of poetry." *—K.J.*

Saltburn (2023)

Emerald Fennell followed up her provocative feature directorial debut, 2020's *Promising Young Woman* (for which she won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), with this divisive psychological thriller. Barry Keoghan stars as Oliver, a misfit student studying at Oxford University who develops a fast obsession with his preppy classmate Felix (Jacob Elordi). The two become friends, and Felix invites Oliver to his family's mega-estate, Saltburn, for the summer.

We won't spoil just how Oliver's relationship with Felix and his family devolves from there — and we also can't guarantee you'll love it — but, as EW's critic writes, "Its endless visual and literary layers will bring its ardent admirers back to it again and again, because it is a triumph of the cinema of excess, in all its orgiastic, unapologetic glory." —*K.J.*

The anthology series looks at the history of life in Britain for the Black and West Indian communities, from protests to parties. Across the collection, you'll see actors like Letitia Wright, John Boyega, Micheal Ward, Kenyah Sandy, and Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn enliven "stories have shaped the environment that we live in now," McQueen told EW. Suspiria (2018)

Dakota Johnson as Susie Bannion in 'Suspiria'

Dakota Johnson as Susie Bannion in 'Suspiria'. Amazon Studios

For a delightfully wacky and wild pick, try Luca Guadagnino's *Suspiria*, a loose remake of Dario Argento's 1977 Italian horror film of the same name. Dakota Johnson plays a young dancer who finds herself in a German company run by witches, including Tilda Swinton as the austere Madame Blanc. This movie isn't for the faint of heart, especially during the h artistic and trippy dance sequences that verge on body horror.

There's even one scene in which a young dancer is "violently whipped around like a rag doll, her joints contorting like a possessed Swiss Army knife," EW's critic says. "In moments like that one, the film jolts to life, rivaling Argento's baroque Grand Guignol style." If you're up for a challenging, beautifully grotesque movie, look no further. —*M.W.*

Ron Howard's dramatization of the headline-making 2018 Thailand cave rescue flew surprisingly under the radar upon its release despite being one of his best films in years. The story sees a soccer team of 12 boys and their assistant coach enter the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system, which floods after a downpour and traps them. Though various cavers attempted to save them, the high-stakes mission proved far more difficult than anyone ever expected.

While Hollywood has often been accused of sensationalizing real events, EW's critic praises *Thirteen Lives* as "refreshingly stripped of the cloying or sentimental: a remarkable story torn from true life, and faithfully told." —*K.J.*

Set in the 1970s, the film follows Frank Bledsoe (Paul Bettany) as he drives back to his hometown for the funeral with his beloved niece (Sophia Lillis). Meanwhile, his secret boyfriend (Peter Macdissi) wants to tag along, too, despite Frank's reservations. This intimate documentary not only delves into the highs and lows of Kilmer's career but also the details of his personal life, particularly his then-ongoing treatment for throat cancer.

This underrated lo-fi mystery film transports us to 1950s New Mexico. In a sleepy town, a switchboard operator and a radio DJ investigate a strange audio signal that intercepts the latter's broadcast. Their findings lead them to uncover a conspiracy, and, most intriguingly, reports of an unidentified flying object. "Just the setting and veneer of the film — it's framed as an episode of a *Twilight Zone-*esque anthology TV series — should be enough for you to guess more or less where it's headed," EW's critic writes, but that doesn't make it any less of an enjoyable ride. —*K.J.*

The dark, hair-raising *You Were Never Really Here* is an arthouse hitman thriller that hits home. It's a grisly, edge-of-your-seat film that is pulse-quickening, strangely quiet, and understated. "Phoenix only seems to have a few spoken lines in the film," notes EW's critic. The Peanuts team recounted the time Andy Cohen's dog mistook Snoopy for "a chew toy"

Judy Sladky — who portrays Snoopy at events — remembered her 2015 appearance on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live during a recent podcast

"Let's just say later, Judy had some cuts on her," Peanuts Worldwide vice president Melissa Menta said

Judy Sladky is reminiscing on some of her celebrity encounters over the decades she's spent inside the Snoopy costume.

Sladky, 74, a retired champion ice dancer, was hand-picked by Peanuts comics creator Charles Schulz to portray Snoopy in parades and other real-life events over 40 years ago.

On a recent episode of the You Don't Know Peanuts podcast, she recounted meeting everyone from Mariah Carey to Andy Cohen while dressed as the beloved black-and-white dog.

The run-in with Cohen, she noted, was a surprise to the Bravo host — and yielded a hilarious interaction with his dog, which was caught on film during a 2015 episode of Watch What Happens Live.

"Snoopy was the bartender on Watch What Happens Live one time," Melissa Menta, one of the podcast's co-hosts and the senior vice president of global brand and communications for Peanuts Worldwide, said on the Oct. 30 episode. "And Snoopy was a good bartender, giving out snow cones without alcohol."

"But at the end, in the after-taping, Andy's dog, Wacha, came out onto set and did confuse Snoopy with a chew toy," she continued. "And let's just say, later, Judy had some cuts on her. And there's a video of when Wacha ate Snoopy."

"Wacha isn't on the show anymore, but Snoopy came back," Sladky added with a laugh.

Menta added that Snoopy's appearance on the show "was a surprise to Andy."

"The producers called me and said, 'Can Snoopy surprise Andy as the bartender?' But then I had to get permission for Snoopy to be a bartender since that's one of our brand rules that we don't involve ourselves with alcohol," she recalled. "But it was too good of an opportunity. So Snoopy got to ring the bell and surprise Andy on set and be the bartender."

Sladky added that Snoopy "covered his ears during a couple of the comments" on the show.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Sladky said the experience of acting as Snoopy over the decades has been "amazing."

"Just knowing how loving people can be, listening to secrets, hearing people. You know, they can confide in Snoopy, and Snoopy doesn't talk," Sladky said.

"Snoopy has taught me that people need to connect, and they want to trust that they are heard," Sladky added. "And that, as a job ... it is not about me. I think that some of the first questions are, 'Isn't it hot in there?' That means nothing. It's all about what the people want, what the audience wants."

Snoopy has certainly made an impact on Cohen, whose aforementioned dog, Wacha, is a beagle mix like Snoopy. The dog was rehomed in May 2020 following "some occasional random signs of aggression" that could prove "catastrophic" for Cohen's son Benjamin Allen — though Cohen often reunites with the dog.

In 2019, Cohen celebrated Benjamin's very first Halloween by dressing up as Snoopy and Woodstock.

Drew Barrymore and ex Luke Wilson's game of talk show phone tag wages ever onward. **

The 50-year-old actress tried to call up the actor to discuss the 27th anniversary of their rom-com *Home Fries* while sitting down with its writer Vince Gilligan on Tuesday's episode of *The Drew Barrymore Show*. However, the pair were eventually sent to voicemail. **

"This is not going the way I planned," Barrymore admitted as the dial tone rang out in the studio. "But what does in life, right?"

After being directed to Wilson's voicemail, the host told Gilligan that they'd leave him a message and see if he returned their call before the end of their chat. **

"We were just talking about you and we're sending you love and can you believe *Home Fries *was 27 years ago now? Oh my god, I know," Barrymore told Wilson. "I know this is just a voicemail, but I love you, I'm sending you love, and I'm here with Vince on the show and we're thinking about you." **

Thankfully, this time around, Barrymore didn't have to wait over two years to hear back from Wilson as he quickly called the pair back during a commercial break. "Hey, Drew!" he said. "Sorry, I was taking my trash cans out."

The 54-year-old actor went on to praise Gilligan and the "unbelievable" career that he's gone on to have in the years since they last worked together. ****"It's just so incredible to see what you went on and did after *Home Fries,*"* *he said. "Because sometimes I'll think about people I know like you and Mike Judge where you'll think, 'God, this guy's got so much talent, but he's also such a good guy that you think that, in a town like Hollywood, that can almost hurt you.'"

It's why Wilson explained he was "especially happy" to see Gilligan go on to create smash hits like *Breaking Bad*, *Better Call Saul,* and the 2019 *Breaking Bad* film, *El Camino*. "It's been incredible and just to have done it all as such a great writer, that's the first way we all met you is through your writing," he continued. "So it's unbelievable, what you did." **

"Oh, God bless you, man, Jesus," Gilligan responded. "I'm blushing here!"

Released in 1998, *Home Fries* follows Dorian (Wilson) as he gets a job at the local Burger-Matic to ensure that no one overheard him and his brother Angus (Jake Busey) scare their mom Beatrice's (Catherine O'Hara) cheating lover Henry (Chris Ellis) to death. It's there that he meets waitress Sally (Barrymore), who is pregnant with Henry's baby, and tries to keep the expectant mother safe from his homicidal family.

Wilson noted that he still remembers "those great days" on the *Home Fries* set. "I mean, for me it was especially fun to get to go back — it was only my second or third movie and I thought, 'Gosh, all movies get made in Texas!' It didn't work out that way."

That includes one evening when he and Busey had gone out for "a couple beers" after work and may have accidentally committed a federal offense along the way. ****"There was a train going through the town and Jake had a flashlight and he started acting like he was directing the train to keep going down the tracks," Wilson said. "And it turns out that's a federal offense, what we were doing, but we weren't doing anything bad. We were just acting like we were directing traffic, but with a locomotive, which we just thought was a great idea."**

"Well, we love you and I always love connecting with you on this show with people and I'm always so grateful that you're game," Barymore said. "You're just the best, Luke. Thank you."

Gilligan added, "Good talking to you, Luke! Have a good one!"

Barrymore has called Wilson, whom she dated from 1996 until 1998, multiple times on her talk show. It all started when she and Kate Hudson attempted to prank dial him in a 2023 episode, only to accidentally ring *another* Luke Wilson in her phonebook instead. Hudson, Barrymore, and the correct Wilson eventually connected over FaceTime this March, with Wilson cheekily noting that he'd keep the game going by getting his brother Owen involved, too.

*The Mummy*, Stephen Sommers' rip-roaring reboot of the 1932 Boris Karloff classic, turned star Brendan Fraser into an action hero upon its release in 1999.

The horror-comedy-action hybrid wasn't a sure bet. The resurrection of the Universal monster franchise toiled in development hell for decades, with genre icons like George Romero and Clive Barker attached at various points.

The studio wanted a low-budget horror flick, but Sommers pitched a swashbuckling, *Indiana Jones*-inspired take on the creature feature. The rest is ancient history. "I've always wanted to do a version of *The Mummy*," he ** on its 20th anniversary. "I heard they'd parted ways with another writer-director… One of the first things I said was 'Nobody wants to see a guy wrapped in bandages; they're going to laugh at it.'"

History proved him right. The film earned over $400 million worldwide and received an Oscar nomination for visual effects. In the years since, there have been two sequels, a spinoff franchise, and a Tom Cruise-led reboot.

Now, a new *Mummy* movie with Fraser and costar Rachel Weisz is in the works with Radio Silence, the filmmaking team behind horror hits *Ready or Not* (2019) and *Scream VI* (2023). As we wait to see how that project takes shape, let's have a look at what the cast of *The Mummy* has been up to over the past 25 years.

Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell

Brendan Fraser played the dashing hero Rick O'Connell, a treasure hunter and former Captain of the French Foreign Legion.

"We didn't know whether we were making a horror movie, we didn't know if this was an action picture, we didn't know if it was a romance picture," he previously told EW. "All of the above? None of the above? We didn't know. We. Did. Not. Know."

The actor rose to prominence in the early '90s, standing out in *Encino Man *(1992), *School Ties *(1992), and *Airheads *(1994) before swinging into theaters as *George of the Jungle *(1997) and finding critical acclaim in *Gods and Monsters *(1998).

Fraser was bedeviled by Elizabeth Hurley's Beelzebub in *Bedazzled *(2000), earned career-best reviews for the Vietnam drama *The Quiet American *(2002), and landed a role in the Best Picture-winning *Crash *(2004). Injuries from his years of stunt work required surgeries that curbed his action star status, but he found regular TV work, including *Trust *(2018) and *Doom Patrol *(2019–2023).

His road back to big-screen glory began in Steven Soderbergh's heist movie *No Sudden Move *(2021) and led to his Oscar-winning turn in *The Whale *(2022) and a memorable role in Martin Scorsese's *Killers of the Flower Moon *(2023).

Upcoming projects include Hikari's *Rental Family,* a festival favorite, and the historical war drama *Pressure*, in which he plays Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Fraser was married to actress Afton Smith, with whom he shares three sons, from 1998 to 2009. He has been in a relationship with makeup artist Jeanne Moore since 2022.

Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan

Rachel Weisz played bookworm turned mummy slayer Evelyn Carnahan.

The English actress impressed for years on stage and across the arthouse circuit before grabbing the attention of Imhotep — and mainstream audiences — in *The Mummy*.

"It was the '90s and a lot of the women's parts were not very interesting," she told *Newsweek*. "[Evie] was just a very unusual female character. She was a librarian, and she was in the middle of this action movie. She was funny and kind of mischievous and honest."

That role launched one of the most celebrated screen careers in recent history. Weisz showed off her range in everything from the rom-com *About a Boy *(2002) to the dark graphic novel adaptation *Constantine *(2005) before winning an Oscar for *The Constant Gardener *(2005).

After starring in *The Fountain *(2006) — her then-fiancee Darren Aronofsky's interlocking triptych about conquering death — she stole every scene in Rian Johnson's *The Brothers Bloom *(2008), and continued cycling between big-budget dramas, such as *The Lovely Bones* (2009), and more intimate ones like *The Deep Blue Sea *(2011).

The international star landed on Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos' radar for his absurdist comedy *The Lobster *(2015); the two reunited for *The Favourite *(2018), where her acerbic performance landed her another Oscar nod.

No stranger to blockbusters with *The Bourne Legacy *(2012) and *Oz the Great and Powerful *(2013) on her résumé, Weisz joined the MCU for a villainous role in *Black Widow *(2021). Most recently, she stepped into Jeremy Irons' scrubs as identical twin gynecologists in the gender-swapped miniseries remake of *Dead Ringers *(2023).

She and Aronofsky were engaged for several years and share a son, Henry. In 2011, she married Daniel Craig, and in 2018 the couple welcomed a daughter. In 2013, the two actors shared the stage in *Betrayal*, Weisz's Broadway debut.

Scottish actor John Hannah was Evelyn's troublemaking brother Jonathan.

Before unraveling the Mummy, he stole the hearts of audiences with his breakout performance as Matthew in *Four Weddings and a Funeral *(1994), for which he earned a BAFTA nomination, and as Gwyneth Paltrow's love interest in *Sliding Doors *(1998).

"I struggled a bit doing *The Mummy* at first," he told EW in 2019. "I was like, 'I don't understand what I'm doing here!' Brendan's the hero, and Kevin J. was doing the comedy stuff. I'm like, 'Steve, what's my function?' He said, 'Just mess around in the background, and if it's funny, we'll cover it.'"

Hannah starred alongside Denzel Washington in the biopic *The Hurricane *(1999) before reprising Jonathan in *The Mummy Returns *(2001)*. *In the years since, he's found a consistent home on the small screen, playing key roles in the *Spartacus *franchise, *Damages* (2012), and *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. *(2016–2017). He recently guest starred on HBO's hit *The Last of Us *(2023).

Hannah wed his *Sliding Doors *costar Joanna Roth in 1996. They have two children.

Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep

Arnold Vosloo was Imhotep, the cursed mummy who returns from the tomb in search of his lost love.

"They go, 'All right, here's your wardrobe.' It's, like, a G-string. I liked my beers; I had a bit of a paunch — still do," Vosloo previously told EW. "Steve told me afterwards that the wardrobe master said, 'We've got a problem. We've got a fat Mummy!' So in Morocco I was just running and walking and eating whatever it is they make you eat to lose weight."

Before playing the classic villain, Vosloo was a celebrated film, television, and theater actor in his native South Africa. He made his stateside debut in the cult sword-and-sorcery adventure *Gor *(1987) and hunted Jean-Claude Van Damme in John Woo's *Hard Target *(1993).

After his defeat in *The Mummy *movies*, *he menaced *Agent Cody Banks *(2003), costarred with Leonardo DiCaprio in *Blood Diamond *(2006), and shored up his bad-guy bonafides as Cobra agent Zartan in *G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra *(2009) and *G.I. Joe: Retaliation *(2013). His TV work has included *24 *(2005), *Bosch *(2017), and *Jack Ryan *(2019).

Vosloo was married to actress Nancy Mulford from 1988 to 1991. He wed marketing director Silvia Ahi in 1998.

Kevin J. O'Connor was the disloyal thief Beni Gabor, whose greed gets the best of him.

As he told EW in 2019, making the film was its own adventure: "You'd see one little black cloud and you'd think, 'What is this?' This little black cloud would turn into a sandstorm that was blinding and threw the camera equipment around. It was insane… I chose to wear open-toed sandals for my character. After my first night, I realized how wrong I was. I would look down and see something moving in the sand."

O'Connor was already a well-established character actor, with *Peggy Sue Got Married *(1986), *Steel Magnolias *(1989), *Amistad *(1997), and *Tanner '88 *(1988) under his belt. After getting eaten alive by scarabs in *The Mummy*, he served as the diabolical lab assistant Igor in Sommers' *Van Helsing *(2004), then faced a different kind of monster in Paul Thomas Anderson's *There Will Be Blood *(2007). He joined Patrick Swayze for his final performance in the series *The Beast *(2009) and reunited with Anderson for *The Master *(2012).

The Windy City native was a recurring player on *Chicago P.D. *(2014–2015) as well as the Stephen King miniseries *11.22.63 *(2016). In recent years, he has popped up in *Widows *(2018), *Catch-22 *(2019), and the Kirsten Dunst-led series *On Becoming a God in Central Florida *(2019).

Veteran screen presence Jonathan Hyde brought the film's resident Egyptologist, Dr. Allen Chamberlain, to life.

The Australian character actor was best known to Americans as the trustworthy butler in *Richie Rich *(1994), in dual roles in *Jumanji *(1995), and as the historically infamous J. Bruce Ismay in *Titanic *(1997).

Modern audiences may recognize him from Guillermo del Toro's vampire series *The Strain *(2014–2017); he reunited with the genre maestro for the Gothic chiller *Crimson Peak *(2015). Recently Hyde appeared, ironically enough, in *Dr. Jekyll *(2023) with Eddie Izzard, and guest starred as the Duke of Norfolk on *The Crown *(2023).

Most recently, Hyde appeared in Brady Corbet's Oscar-winning *The Brutalist* (2024).

Hyde wed opera singer Isobel Buchanan in 1980 and they have two children. Their daughter, Georgia King, is also an actor.

Oded Fehr was Ardeth Bay, leader of the sacred guards tasked with protecting the City of the Dead.

"We had no idea when we shot the first *Mummy *that it's going to be what it ended up being… I heard Rachel going, 'This is the end of my career,'" he said on *Popverse'*s *Mummy *cast reunion panel. "I was just happy to be there, you know… for me it was my first job."

After *The Mummy Returns, *he faced off with the undead again in *Resident Evil: Apocalypse *(2004) and played the villain Zankou on *Charmed *(2004–2005). Fehr co-headlined Showtime's *Sleeper Cell *(2005–2006) and landed roles on *NCIS *(2013), *Once Upon a Time *(2016–2017) *The Blacklist *(2015–2019), and *Star Trek: Discovery *(2020–2024).

The Israeli actor will return to the Final Frontier for the spin-off *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.*

Fehr and Rhonda Tollefson have been married since 2000 and have three children.

Erick Avari played Dr. Terence Bey, curator of the Cairo Museum of Antiquities.

A two-decade veteran of stage and screen*, *he already had an extensive résumé, including the *Seinfeld *(1989) pilot and supporting turns in *Stargate *(1994), *Independence Day *(1996), and Fraser's *Encino Man.*

The actor mentioned on a podcast in 2015 that his role changed at the last minute: "I was originally cast in the role Jonathan Hyde played and Omar Sharif was set to play the curator, but two weeks before the shoot, they called to say Omar had emergency hip surgery and so they were bumping me up to the role of the curator."

Avari played a human in Tim Burton's *Planet of the Apes *(2001) and the billionaire businessman father of Jennifer Garner's Elektra in *Daredevil *(2003).

He subsequently settled in on the small screen, booking parts in *Heroes *(2006), *Days of Our Lives *(2009), and *The Brink *(2017). The actor has remained mostly retired since the first season of faith-based drama *The Chosen *(2019).

Avari and his wife, Margaret Walker, have been married since 1980.

Bernard Fox portrayed the overzealous fighter pilot Captain Winston Havelock.

The Welsh actor became a sitcom stalwart in the '60s, appearing on everything from *The Andy Griffith Show *(1963–1965) to *Hogan's Heroes *(1965–1970). While he remains most noteworthy for his sitcom work, he also holds a unique big-screen distinction: He appeared in two films based on the sinking of the *Titanic*, both *A Night to Remember *(1958) and the ship's eponymous 1997 blockbuster.

*The Mummy *was one of his last acting roles, but he went out with yet another bit of déjà vu, reprising his recurring character from *Bewitched *(1966–1972) on the supernatural soap opera *Passions *(1999–2000).

Fox died of heart failure in 2016 at age 89. He and his wife, Jacqueline, were married for over 50 years and had two children.

Patricia Velásquez was Imhotep's gold-painted lover, the Pharaoh's bride-to-be Anck-su-namun.

"It took almost 10 hours to get that makeup on," she said in 2024. "I have four people drawing on my body, and then they had a special chair so I could sit and the paint would not smear… I had anywhere between two to four hours of retouching every day. It was tough."

After an expanded role in *The Mummy Returns, *Velásquez showed off her comedic chops as Marta on *Arrested Development *(2003–2004) and guested on *Rescue Me *(2004) and *The L Word* (2008). The Venezuelan actress recently appeared in the horror films *The Curse of La Llorona *(2019) and *Malignant *(2021).

Off-screen, she has been honored for her philanthropy, having created the Wayuu Taya Foundation to assist the indigenous Wayuu people of Venezuela and Colombia. The United Nations appointed her the UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2003.

Velásquez has a daughter, Maya, and is in a relationship with businesswoman Alison Lawton.

The Dallas Cowboys found one more way to stick it to Micah Parsons on his way out the door. The team reportedly included a poison-pill condition into its trade with the Green Bay Packers, preventing the team from trading Parsons back to the NFC East for a few years, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

That condition — which wasn't reported at the time of the trade — prevents the Packers from sending Parsons to any NFC East team through the 2026 NFL season. If the Packers decide to trade Parsons back into the NFC East before then, the team would give its 2028 first-round pick to the Cowboys.

Some around the league were unaware of that condition, which only came to light when the Cowboys decided to trade for New York Jets defensive end Quinnen Williams. An NFL database that tracks draft picks listed the Cowboys' 2028 first-round pick as off-limits. Other teams noticed that at the trade deadline, leading to Schefter's report.

The Packers' 2028 first-round pick was also off-limits. Green Bay reportedly added the same poison-pill provision to the deal, preventing the Cowboys from trading defensive tackle Kenny Clark back to the NFC North.

While it feels unlikely that the Packers would turn around and trade Parsons after giving up two first-round picks and Clark — especially after the Packers then signed Parsons to a four-year, $188 million deal — the poison-pill condition prevents Parsons from forcing the issue. There's no evidence Parsons would do that so soon after being traded by the Cowboys.

Still, the Cowboys weren't willing to take that chance. The team was likely motivated to include that poison-pill provision into the trade after the Philadelphia Eagles were aggressive in their pursuit of Parsons. In addition to that, Parsons grew up near Philadelphia and reportedly wants to play there eventually, per Schefter.

Both teams are set to meet in Week 10. The Packers and Eagles will square off on "Monday Night Football." Both clubs are among the best teams in the NFC, ensuring it should be a tight matchup.

Parsons has been a massive addition for the Packers. Through eight games, he's registered 6.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits. He's well on his way to yet another Pro Bowl season, and is a big reason the Packers rank in the top 10 of points allowed.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, find themselves sitting at 3-5-1 through nine weeks and rank 31st in points allowed.
