To Celtic fans it might seem like sacrilege to doubt Martin O'Neill's capacity to get them through whatever it is they're going through right now - a slump or something deeper - but keeping the faith is surely becoming testing.

After their shellacking at Ibrox on Sunday, Celtic's response against Ferencvaros was another heavy defeat and three more goals conceded.

More absent-minded stuff in the midfield, more loose defending, more negativity and lack of accuracy on the ball, no great grasp of the basics of pass and move, not enough intensity, not enough work-rate, not enough of anything that you need to give yourself a chance.

At times, as it meandered along at 3-1 to Ferencvaros, Celtic tried to stage some kind of gallop but their attempts were from distance, hopeful efforts rather than anything built on the back of coherence and pressing and speed.

Celtic at their best - in the finest days under Ange Postecoglou - were all about aggression and ingenuity, about dynamism and risk-taking, about pace and belief and pulling defenders into places where they did not want to be.

This is a poor imitation.

Celtic are 'little bit broken' - but is change of shape 'worth risking'?

Reaction, analysis & have your say on Celtic's defeat

O'Neill mirrors performance of his team

Things can turn quickly in Scottish football.

The second act of this season's Old Firm show on Sunday is still a hard one to call, partly because it's at Celtic Park and also because there surely has to be some kind of response from O'Neill's team to their pitiful fate at Ibrox last weekend.

Their fans will be worried, though. Five goals given up against LASK, a desperate experience at Ibrox - and now this.

In moments on Thursday, some of their football was reminiscent of darker days - the failures of Cluj and Copenhagen in 2019 and 2020, when Bayo and Bolingoli were in the building; Sparta Prague in 2020, when Klimala and Ajeti, Duffy and Laxalt were in the team.

It was all very Legia Warsaw, very Salzburg, very Maribor. The energy levels were low, the booing was loud and the feeling of a side with no answers was unmissable.

In the aftermath, O'Neill spoke about frustration, failure and psychological damage, how low moments like these hit you hard and test your resolve. He promised to "get ourselves together" for Rangers on Sunday but his tone was flat and a touch tired.

He outlined some of the ways in which Celtic were deficient on the night but didn't talk with the spirit of a man who had answers. In many ways his post-match comments mirrored his team's performance - leaden, stale, disheartening.

O'Neill has fixed many problems over the years, not just in his first trophy-laden spell but in his return to chaos last season. He restored order and confidence, two things that have been lost.

The force of his personality gave Celtic fight. They were not always pretty to watch but they were ferociously hard to beat. Nobody managed it on the title run-in.

That kind of never-say-die only seems like yesterday, but in other ways it feels like an awfully long time ago.

Celtic need solutions and inspiration

They had a decent start against Ferencvaros, then conceded a soft goal. They hauled themselves back into it with a little glimpse of quality, but then fell back into destructive ways. Safe passes, little zeal, only a modicum of fire and emotion.

The goal they conceded just before the break was the type of goal that poor sides give away. Hesitancy in the first instance to fight for the loose ball, weakness in the second instance when trying to prevent the cross and then defensive disorganisation and bewilderment in the end.

Celtic had 62.5% possession in the opening half but trailed 2-1. Camilo Duran, playing through the middle ahead of Kasper Hogh, had eight touches of the ball.

Duran was in his favoured position but offered little. A player who showed such zest and love of his new life in Glasgow only a few short weeks ago is looking a shadow of himself.

Hogh, with goals against Man City (two), Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Sporting, Porto, Jagiellonia and Olympiacos (three) for Bodo Glimt, has morphed into an awkward looking centre-forward with a poor first touch and no chances to feed on.

He has now scored in just one of his eight games as a Celtic player. O'Neill has so far failed to get the best out of a player the club paid £11m for.

Callum McGregor, the great totem, is looking a little lost. O'Neill has all the nous in the world to arrest this, but he needs to do it quickly. It has to be said, he doesn't look or sound all that convincing.

The way things are going for Celtic you could almost have guaranteed a goal for Daniel Arzani, their former player who came and went in a blur of nothingness.

To add salt, it was a magnificent strike after a counter-attack that exposed Celtic in the most embarrassing way. There was more order in the Keystone Cops.

Arzani appeared in acres of space on the left, Colby Donovan having over-committed to attack and now busting a gut in a forlorn attempt to recover. Arzani had patience and precision. He whipped his shot into the top corner. Easy.

O'Neill needs some amount of solutions in the coming days. Football is weird. He might find them, but his team is lacking ideas, conviction, composure, physical and psychological heft, creativity, ruthlessness and stomach for a fight.

The manager, himself, looks like he's lacking in any inspiration. He's bounced back from challenging situations in his football past and you almost become attuned to him doing so again, but there is a lot to fix here.

McGregor says the team is a little bit broken at the moment. Rangers might be licking their lips at the prospect of facing a wounded animal. Beware the backlash and all of that, but they have an opportunity to land another blow.

Sunday will tell us much about the way of things between the Glasgow giants.

Two new reports provide details about the workout that left NHL prospect Matthew Mayich in the hospital

Mayich was reportedly “disoriented” during the bear crawl portion of the workout and collapsed during the final exercise

The 21-year-old has “zero chance of recovery,” his attorney said earlier this month

NHL prospect Matthew Mayich struggled to stand multiple times before collapsing during the military-style workout with the Arizona State Sun Devils that left him hospitalized, witnesses allege in two new reports.

A report from The Athletic, published Thursday, Sept. 16, provides new details about the workout led by Tim Ziesel, a former Green Beret unaffiliated with Arizona State who was brought in to run a special workout with the hockey team on Aug. 20, their first day of organized practices.

Ziesel, who reportedly had a “handshake agreement” with head coach Greg Powers to lead the Sun Devils’ practice according to ArizonaRepublic reporter Robert Anglen, took the team through different movements, such as squats and push-ups, at Sun Angel Stadium, the university’s unshaded track and field facilities.

According to The Athletic, which interviewed 12 people either at the workout or briefed on it, Mayich, 21, appeared “disoriented” while doing bear crawls across the field. The witness told the outlet Mayich appeared to catch himself before he almost collapsed after that exercise.

Two other players on the team vomited during the workout, The Athletic reported.

Ziesel reportedly belittled players during the workout, according to The Athletic, and he left after assigning the final event of the workout — a relay race requiring players to carry a medicine ball.

Mayich was reportedly one of the last players to begin the race, and he collapsed after stumbling and dropping the ball, sources told The Athletic. He reportedly attempted to get up twice before collapsing a final time.

Sources told the outlet that one player and an assistant coach shouted for assistance before teammates “found him lying on the ground, incoherent and distressed, unable to respond to questions.”

Mayich remained in the sun for several minutes after he collapsed. Four of his Sun Devils teammates reportedly then carried him into the shade and an athletic trainer retrieved water and an ice pack to put on his chest, according to The Athletic. An ambulance arrived at the stadium at 8:31 a.m., around an hour and a half after the workout began, the outlet said.

Rob Carey, the attorney representing the Mayich family, told ESPN the sophomore athlete suffered “exertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain.”

“There were no other contributing conditions, only exertion-related heat. This is not an induced coma,” Carey told the outlet, adding, “We need a miracle.”

Carey told the Arizona Republicon Sept. 1 that Mayich has “zero chance of recovery.”

PEOPLE has reached out to Ziesel’s attorney for comment.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos have too many things to correct from their opening-week stumble to concern themselves with exacting any sort of revenge for their blowout loss at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars last December.

Start with more than two dozen missed tackles in their stunning 31-10 loss at Kansas City.

Defensive struggles were a league-wide issue in Week 1 as offenses lit up the scoreboards, tying the record for the highest-scoring opening week in NFL history. But the Broncos' inability to get reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to the ground was especially glaring because Denver's defense has long been one of the stoutest in football.

"I mean, it was definitely a big factor,” Denver defensive end Zach Allen said. “It's very correctable, so that's the good news. It'll definitely be a point of emphasis in practice this week. And knowing the guys we got, it'll get addressed, it'll get fixed. So, it shouldn't be a problem anymore."

"We've bounced back from bad losses the last few years, and we play a really good Jacksonville team this week. So, it's going to be its own challenge.”

Jacksonville (1-0) has won nine consecutive regular-season games and owns a 177-point scoring differential over its opponents in that span. That’s the highest point margin in the NFL over that span by more than 80 points.

That included a 14-point win at Denver last December that snapped the Broncos' 11-game winning streak.

“I know they want some revenge," Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis said. "And coming off of a loss like last week, we’re going to get their best ball. We just got to go out there and execute, play to our standards and understand that we're playing a (ticked) off team, which is good because that challenges our standards.”

Latest odds: Broncos by 2 1/2

Against the spread: Jaguars 1-0, Broncos 0-1.

Last week: Jaguars beat Browns 34-10; Broncos lost to Chiefs 31-10.

Last meeting: Jaguars beat Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High 34-20, on Dec. 21, 2025.

Series record: Tied 7-7.

Matchup to watch

Jaguars receiving corps versus Denver's defensive backs. This premier matchup pits Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, Brian Thomas Jr. and Josh Cameron against Patrick Surtain II, Riley Moss, Ja'Quan McMillian and Jahdae Barron. Jacksonville's passing attack was strong against Cleveland but the real test comes Sunday when the Broncos try to bounce back from their poor performance at Kansas City.

Stats and stuff

—After tallying a franchise-record 68 sacks last season, the Broncos sacked Patrick Mahomes just twice in the opener. Both of those came from DE Zach Allen.

—With an extra point in the opener, Broncos K Wil Lutz became the third kicker to convert 100 consecutive PATs since the extra point was moved back to the 33-yard line in 2015, joining Justin Tucker and Tyler Bass.

—Broncos TE Evan Engram matched his 2025 total with a TD catch last week when he led Denver with 43 yards receiving. Engram spent the 2022-24 seasons with Jacksonville, totaling 234 catches for 2,094 yards and nine touchdown receptions.

—Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence threw four TD passes against the Browns last week and completed 18 of 23 passes for 245 yards for a 150.6 passer rating. Against Denver last December, Lawrence threw for 279 yards and three TDs and added a touchdown run.

—Jaguars DE Josh Hines-Allen had five tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery last week.

—Third-year LB Ventrell Miller led Jacksonville in Week 1 with nine tackles, a career-best two tackles for loss and his first career sack and forced fumble.

Scorecard

England's impressive T20 form continued as they thrashed Sri Lanka by six wickets in Cardiff to seal the series with a match to spare.

Tom Banton's unbeaten 52 ensured England made light work of chasing a below-par 146, reaching the target in just 12.1 overs.

Jos Buttler and Aneurin Donald raced to an opening stand of 51 in 4.3 overs before they both fell in the space of four balls for 30 and 21 respectively, but England's middle order followed suit in their aggression.

Captain Harry Brook needed to score 49 to break Tilak Varma's record of 336 T20 international runs without being dismissed, and he looked on course, whacking three sixes in his 23 off just eight balls, before he was brilliantly caught by a diving Eshan Malinga.

Banton then took on the charge, clubbing four sixes in his 24-ball knock as England remain unbeaten in the shortest format this summer.

Brendon McCullum's side have now won 22 of their past 25 completed T20s since the start of last summer - a win percentage of 88%, with India (73%) the next best among full-member nations.

England's fluency juxtaposed Sri Lanka's innings as the tourist batters struggled again, limping to 145-9 after being bowled out for just 135 in the opener on Tuesday.

There will be added frustration from this innings, though, as their openers started so brightly by reaching 55-0 from the first five overs.

But Liam Dawson took two wickets in the final over of the powerplay to halt their momentum and the middle order failed to recover, losing 9-90 thereafter and adding just 12 from a dire final four overs.

Dawson finished with 3-32 and Jamie Overton 2-23, while Sonny Baker impressed again with his pace and control in a miserly spell of 1-15, including a wicket maiden in the 19th over.

The series concludes at Old Trafford on Saturday and is followed by three one-day internationals.

Sri Lanka scored just 12 runs from the final four overs of their inningsDawson and Banton lead England dominance

Though it is proving to be a mismatched series so far, England are building a well-balanced line-up under Brook's leadership and have barely broken sweat in notching a 2-0 lead.

Sri Lanka's explosive start, led by Pathum Nissanka, who top-scored with 37, was the only time England have been on the back foot, but it was the ever-reliable Dawson who dragged it back, having become a mainstay in Brook's T20 line-up.

The two soft dismissals highlighted Sri Lanka's woes - Lahiru Udara was caught at mid-on and Kamil Mishara chipped one straight back to the slow left-arm spinner.

What followed was a series of soft dismissals, most caught trying to find the boundary, as Overton and Baker hammered away at a good length before Archer, who had started expensively, claimed two wickets at the death to revive his own figures.

Sri Lanka managed just two sixes in their innings compared to England's 10, with it being only the seventh time their top five have all hit at least one in T20 internationals.

Newcomer Donald started the carnage, ramping Dushmantha Chameera's first ball over the ropes, before Buttler joined the party and Brook then launched three of his own into the stands.

England's intent was clear from the fact Donald's strike-rate of 161.54 was the lowest of the top five. Spinner Wanindu Hasaranga took most of the damage as he conceded 42 off just three overs, with a couple disappearing out of the ground.

Banton, one of few batters to miss out in England's 254-4 on Tuesday, made the most of his opportunity to produce a fine finish by sweeping and striking firmly down the ground.

England have set themselves up nicely to finish unbeaten in T20s this summer after thrashing India 4-0 earlier in the year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright are ineligible to join any NFL teams this season after they attempted to return to college and play for LSU, the league said in a memo sent to each NFL team.

Harris was a defensive tackle and Wright played tight end for Mississippi during its run to a College Football Playoff semifinal last season. Both had tryouts in the NFL this summer after going undrafted. They then tried joining former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin at LSU and sued for the right to regain their college eligibility.

After the Southeastern Conference passed a rule barring pros from heading back to college to play and a Louisiana court put that restriction on hold, LSU left both players off its roster as it opened its season.

The NFL’s letter noted both Harris and Wright “were eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft, returned to college and participated with their college football team after the opening of NFL training camp, and therefore, they are ineligible to visit, try out with or be signed by NFL clubs during the 2026 season.”

The obtained a copy of the memo, which was dated Wednesday.

Harris and Wright were the only players mentioned in the letter. The NFL acknowledged this list didn’t include all 2026 draft-eligible players who returned to college and said teams should contact the league’s player personnel department with any questions about a player’s eligibility.

The letter also noted it is each team’s responsibility to verify a player’s eligibility. Discipline for eligibility violations can include fines and/or the loss of draft picks.

Football still reigns supreme as the most popular sport in the U.S., but its grip might be loosening.

Gallup recently released results of its long-running poll tracking Americans’ favorite sports to watch, and football came out well ahead of every other sport.

The poll, which was taken over Aug. 3-24, found that 31% of Americans say football is their favorite sport, 20 percentage points higher than any other sport.

The next tier, however, is much tighter.

Out of those surveyed, 11% picked basketball as their favorite sport, while 10% went with baseball and 9% chose soccer.

It’s an all-time high for soccer’s popularity in the U.S., which previously had never registered higher than 7%. As recently as 2007 the sport picked up just 2% of responses. Now soccer is nearly tied with two pillars of North American professional sports.

It still pales in comparison to football, though, which may be in a more precarious position than its lead suggests.

The 31% figure is, in fact, the lowest share of responses for football since 2001, when 28% picked the sport as their favorite. That year, basketball surged to a 16% share, its second highest ever, and 6% picked auto racing, an all-time high for the sport.

This year, football’s share is also 10 points below the last Gallup poll in 2023, when 41% favored the sport.

It’s also notable that this year’s share is football’s fourth lowest in the 24 polls since the sport took over the most popular sports crown from baseball in 1972.

Football’s popularity, however, requires context.

The latest edition of the poll was run in August, prior to the start of football season. Based on Gallup’s own numbers, football performs worse in the poll when it takes place outside of football season.

Since 1972, football has averaged a 38% share during the season. Meanwhile, that share dips to 32% outside of the sport’s fall season. That suggests the timing of the poll may explain part of football’s 10-point drop.

Still, this year’s 31% number is lower than the out-of-season average.

Additionally, the poll is simply asking respondents for their favorite sport to watch. That means even if fewer Americans now rank football first, they may still be tuning into games.

Indeed, 16 of the top 25 spots in Nielsen’s live sports telecast rankings for Aug. 31 through Sept. 6 were for Week 1 college football games — and the top telecast was the Wisconsin-Notre Dame tilt at Lambeau Field, which drew 7.4 million viewers.

And so, football still seems quite safe as America’s favorite sport to watch for now — even if the latest poll shows a crack in its once-impregnable lead.
