Hollywood is making another attempt at reviving Friday the 13th, this time in the form of a prequel series starring Linda Cardellini.
Peacock and A24 have teamed up to produce Crystal Lake, which returns to the franchise’s titular setting and stars Cardellini as Jason’s mother, Pam Voorhees. Hannibal and Pushing Daisies mastermind Bryan Fuller was initially attached as showrunner, but later departed due to creative differences.Brad Caleb Kane, who previously worked on It: Welcome to Derry, Fringe, and Lodge 49, now serves as the series’ creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
It’s hard to see how the saga of Jason Voorhees can be expanded any further — especially since Jason literally went to space at one point — but going back to where it all began for the infamous killer could prove fertile ground for untapped stories.
Below, we break down everything we know so far about Crystal Lake, including the cast, release date, and how it all connects to the famous horror franchise.
What is Crystal Lake about?

Crystal Lake follows Pam Voorhees, a single mother reeling from the loss of her young, sickly son, Jason, who drowned in the local lake nearly a year earlier. However, the series will incorporate scenes with young Jason (played by Callum Vinson), suggesting that it will flash back to his childhood. The official premise reads: “When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events are set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?”
In December 2025, Kane talked to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming series. “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ‘70s thriller,” he explained. “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”
Speaking about the show’s “odd” tone in a July 2026 chat with EW, Cardellini said, “It is many things at once, but it works as this fun ride. There’s some scene set in an outdoor carnival, and I feel like it’s almost that feel.”
“Everybody in this world is living in a different genre in their mind,” Kane said, “until they collide with the genre that Pam is in.”
Who’s in the cast of Crystal Lake?

Cardellini, the Freaks and Geeks breakout who has been a ubiquitous presence in film and on TV over the last several decades, leads Crystal Lake as Pamela Voorhees.
Vinson, a veteran of series like Chucky and The Night Agent, plays a young Jason. The actor wears prosthetics that give his character an enlarged head from hydrocephalus.
Fans of the original film will note the return of supporting characters such as Claudette and Barry, a pair of horny camp counselors who suffer Pamela’s wrath. Originally played by Debra S. Hayes and Willie Adams in the 1980 movie, they’ll be portrayed here by Danielle Kotch (Elsbeth) and Phoenix Parnevik (Bel-Air). According to Kane, they will be “full-on characters” on Crystal Lake.

Also returning? Officer Dorf and Crazy Ralph, a pair of characters originally played by Ron Millkie and Walt Gorney. Here, they’ll be played by Cameron Scoggins (Nashville) and Nick Cordileone (Warrior).
New characters include another cop, Levon Brooks, played by William Catlett (Abigail), and his sister, a journalist named Brianna played by Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem). Cardellini spoke with EW about Brooks, whom Pamela considers a friend. “Is he also then a foe at some point? We don’t know,” she said. “That relationship was really informative because when they speak, there is a lot of history that you don’t see on screen that has happened before the series begins.”

Crystal Lake serves as a prequel to the first Friday the 13th movie, exploring Jason’s mother as a young woman struggling with the loss of her son and gradually unraveling in the aftermath.
“She’s only in such a small fraction of the movies and there’s very little actually known about her, but she’s the inciting incident in some ways,” Cardellini told EW about her character. “She’s an important piece of the puzzle, but a relatively unknown one.”
“We wanted to dive into Pam’s psychology. We wanted to see her unraveling after [watching] the events of the movie that everybody knows,” Kane added. “We wanted to see her relationship with Jason and what his death kicks off in her — her trying to find some sort of equilibrium in her life after the thing that ostensibly she lives for, her son, was taken away from her, and how all the people around her and the circumstances surrounding her make that impossible to do. So it’s really a character piece.”
Is there a trailer for Crystal Lake?
Yes, a 50-second teaser was released in July, offering some brief but intriguing glimpses of Crystal Lake, including excited kids arriving at camp, a dead body being wheeled away on a gurney, and a bloodied Cardellini desperately searching the lake for Jason.
“It’s like someone put a curse on this town,” a voiceover says, setting the ominous tone.
