The Chinese government is pressing for answers after a Chinese man died hours after being taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a U.S. territory.

Lianyong Wei, 51, died Aug. 23 at a hospital in the Northern Mariana Islands, ICE announced in a news release Tuesday.

Wei was arrested Aug. 21 by the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Public Safety on criminal charges stemming from an alleged assault on a family of five at their home, according to ICE. He was taken into ICE custody the next day pending removal proceedings.

ICE said a guard at the lockup in Saipan found Wei unresponsive during routine morning checks on Aug. 23. He was taken to a hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead after “life-sustaining interventions were initiated,” the agency said, noting that the cause of his death is under investigation.

Wei entered the U.S. territory in February 2019 and was authorized to stay for two weeks, according to ICE. U.S. authorities began removal proceedings in July 2026, and Wei's next hearing had been scheduled for this month.

The Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles said it had been notified of Wei’s death.

“We have expressed serious concerns to the relevant U.S. authorities over this incident and required a timely and thorough investigation into the cause of Mr. Wei’s death, notification of the findings, measures to prevent any recurrence of similar incidents, and assistance to the family of the deceased in handling the aftermath,” the consulate said in a statement.

Wei is at least the fifth Chinese national who has died in the custody of ICE or the U.S. Border Patrol since March 2025, according to tracking by The . Two of the first four deaths have been ruled suicides and the other two were the result of medical complications.

At least 57 ICE detainees have died since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, a death rate that has alarmed public health experts, advocates for immigrants and the Mexican government.

ICE hasn't said whether Wei received the medical intake screening, which the agency promises to detainees within their first 12 hours in custody. Medical experts say a thorough screening is critical to preventing deaths.

It’s unclear why it took ICE more than a week to acknowledge Wei’s death, which was announced by authorities in the Northern Mariana Islands on Aug. 24. ICE has said it aims to issue a news release on detainee deaths within two business days.

The lockup in Saipan has held an average of 18 ICE detainees on any given day this year, according to ICE data. Roughly 50,000 people live in the Northern Mariana Islands.

“Following this incident, the Department is reviewing relevant procedures and will implement any necessary corrective actions to strengthen prevention and response measures,” Northern Mariana Islands corrections commissioner Anthony Torres said in a statement.

WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The FBI said on Wednesday it was investigating a report that tens of millions of drivers' licenses belonging to people in the United States and Canada were being sold on the dark web.

On Tuesday, the independent journalist Brian Krebs said he had discovered a dark web site selling digital scans of millions of drivers' licenses from people in the U.S. and Canada. He said he confirmed the authenticity of the data being sold with nine people.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, the bureau said it was “looking into the incident” but could not comment “due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.”

The breach, if confirmed, could be one of the largest-ever exposures of government-issued identity documents in North America, creating risks of identity theft and fraud for tens of millions of people.

Krebs said he was alerted to the site after it was advertised on a Russian cybercrime forum, with his own driver's license being offered as a free sample. Krebs said the service, dubbed Nexus, claimed to have tens of millions of licenses for people in the U.S. and Canada, as well as millions of other identification cards and travel documents and hundreds of thousands of medical records. Krebs said that the site appeared to be updating its database of stolen data in real time, indicating that it was being fed by a live breach.

Zach Edwards, a threat researcher at the cybersecurity company Infoblox, said the incident was unprecedented in terms of its sweep.

"There's never been a breach of driver's licenses at this scale," said Edwards, who added that his own license was available for sale on the site. Edwards said that the ongoing nature of the breach "means that this attack created legitimate national security risks for high-profile individuals."

Reuters could not establish the source of the stolen data. Krebs quoted a representative of New Orleans-based identity verification provider IDScan.net as saying that it was investigating the matter. IDScan.net, which describes itself as providing "ID fraud prevention at scale," did not return repeated messages from Reuters.

Krebs said the dark web site offering the driver's license data vanished shortly after he published his report.

George Clooney has voiced skepticism about the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Tom Cruise, by contrast, recently called the $111 billion deal “awesome.” The two A-listers now stand on opposite sides of Hollywood’s most divisive corporate battle.

Paramount-WBD merger doesn’t make sense for George Clooney

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday, Clooney declined to endorse the transaction and questioned its financial logic. He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award and used the platform to address industry consolidation, free speech, and the state of journalism.

“I don’t see how the merger financially ends up making sense for the people who are trying to do it,” Clooney told reporters. “We’ll see. I worry when a big company swallows up another company … I always worry whenever big companies are consolidating because it means a lot of people are going to lose their jobs.”

The actor’s remarks contrast with Tom Cruise, who backed the merger during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. Cruise framed his support around personal relationships rather than balance sheets. “It’s a community to me. It’s not an industry. The people in these studios are not just people in the studios. They’re my family,” Cruise said.

Cruise also endorsed CEO David Ellison’s commitment to release 30 films annually, a production target many observers consider unrealistic. “They’re going to deliver 30 movies,” Cruise insisted. “I want us all to come together as a community to help make those 30 movies.”

Clooney did not address Cruise directly but questioned whether consolidation benefits anyone involved, including Ellison. The deal faces an antitrust challenge from twelve state attorneys general, with a federal trial scheduled for March 2.

Beyond the merger, Clooney defended Mark Ruffalo, whose criticism of the deal and the Ellison family drew accusations of antisemitism from Paramount. “I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely,” Clooney said. “It’s ridiculous. We’re not going to ban speech. I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it.”

Clooney joined an open letter supporting Ruffalo, signed by Joel Coen, Joaquin Phoenix, Todd Haynes, and others over the past few days. He called Ruffalo a “good man” while stopping short of echoing his specific arguments.

DNB pulled 86 metric tonnes of gold from New York and Ottawa, making London its largest single vault at 32% of reserves.

Only 27 of the 86 tonnes physically traveled, with DNB handling the rest by selling New York gold and buying equivalent London bullion.

Gold trades near $4,383 an ounce, up from $2,605 at end of 2024, as central banks globally cut dollar-denominated exposure.

Just released. Our analysts combed the entire stock market and named the ten best stocks to buy right now. The report is free. Enter your email and see if any of your stocks made the cut.

The Dutch central bank moved 86.4 U.S. tons of gold out of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York between March and August 2026, redirecting the bullion to London in what it called a crisis readiness measure. That figure, equivalent to 78.39 metric tonnes, refers to New York alone rather than the widely circulating combined figure. De Nederlandsche Bank, known as DNB, disclosed the transfer publicly on Wednesday, and separately removed 7.35 metric tonnes from Ottawa. Taken together, New York and Canada gave up 86 metric tonnes, more than a quarter of the roughly 313 metric tonnes DNB held across those two North American vaults.

DNB framed the move in procedural language. "Due to the increasing geopolitical instability, the DNB is working on improving its crisis readiness. Improving the marketability of Dutch gold, and with that how quickly it can be used in crisis situations, is a part of that," the bank said in a statement carried by NL Times. DNB President Olaf Sleijpen added: "We assume that we will never need to deploy the gold, but it is nevertheless necessary to strengthen our resilience and preparedness."

Reshuffling the Vault Map

Before the transfer, New York held 31.3% of Dutch gold reserves, Ottawa 19.7%, and London 18.1%. After the reshuffle, New York and Ottawa each sit at 18.5%, London jumps to 32.1% and becomes the largest single location, and the Netherlands itself holds 30.8%. Total Dutch gold reserves stand at 612.4 metric tonnes, valued at €72.2 billion, or roughly $83.6 billion, at the end of 2025. That valuation is not current. This specific transfer was worth approximately €10.1 billion to €10.3 billion, or about $10.7 billion to $10.9 billion.

How the Gold Actually Moved

The mechanics deserve attention because they are widely misunderstood. Only roughly 27 metric tonnes were physically transferred, routed through DNB's secure facility in Zeist and then on to London. The remaining roughly 59 metric tonnes was handled by selling gold held in New York and buying an equivalent amount in London rather than crating up bars and flying them across the Atlantic. It is a book transfer for most of the tonnage, with real bullion changing hands only for the smaller share.

Per DutchNews.nl, DNB has repeatedly warned about Dutch reliance on the United States since Donald Trump returned to the White House. The bank also explicitly stated it is not worried the U.S. would seize the reserves. The framing centers on diversification and liquidity.

Part of a Broader Central Bank Trend

Dutch gold has been coming home in stages. DNB repatriated 122.5 metric tonnes from New York to Amsterdam in 2014 and moved 200 metric tonnes to the new Zeist vault in 2023. Germany completed a comparable repatriation in 2017, pulling hundreds of tonnes from New York and Paris to Frankfurt, and the Bank of France moved bullion from New York to Paris earlier in 2026. Global central bank gold purchases have surged to multi-decade highs since 2022, propelled by inflation hedging, sanctions risk after Russian reserves were frozen, and a broader push to trim dollar-denominated exposure. Gold traded near $4,383 an ounce on Wednesday, well above the $2,605 close on December 31, 2024. This is the sovereign reserve version of the same trade we covered in "Gold and BTC Surge As Bessent Reignites The 'Debasement Trade'."

With the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield at 4.79% and M2 money supply at $23.22T in July, the signal to watch is whether other European central banks follow with their own London and home-country rebalancing in the next two quarters.

President Donald Trump has called the deal granting the US control of strategic Venezuelan oil fields "the biggest in history".

North American Blue Energy Partners (Nabep), a company little known outside the South American country, will oversee the production and sale of 17 oil fields containing about 65bn barrels of crude.

The deal has raised eyebrows to say the least.

And at the heart of it is Alejandro Betancourt López, the Venezuelan oil baron who heads the Barbados-registered firm.

The 46-year-old has a history of doing business with the Venezuelan government since the time of the late President Hugo Chávez.

But he has also found himself under investigation in five different countries. He has previously denied wrongdoing and has never been convicted of a crime.

So who is the fixer picked to deliver on Trump's oil abundance plan?

The 'bolichicos'

Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López was born in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas in February 1980 into a middle-class family.

A graduate of Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, he is estimated to be worth around $2.6bn (£1.9bn).

Although his CV attributes his success to his "entrepreneurial spirit", Venezuelan journalists who have followed his career maintain that it all began with the connections he made in the classrooms of the Instituto Cumbres de Caracas, a private religious school in the Venezuelan capital.

Venezuelan journalist Alek Boyd, who has been tracking Betancourt since 2011, said that the businessman became a close school friend of Javier Alvarado Pardi, the son of the man who would later become president of Electricidad de Caracas, vice-minister of energy, and an executive at Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) – the state-run oil company.

"In 2009, at the height of the electricity crisis, Alvarado introduced Betancourt and his partners to his father and assured him they could solve the problem… despite having no experience in the electricity sector," said Boyd.

Around that time, Derwick Associates, the engineering firm that Betancourt founded with a cousin, received 12 government contracts, awarded without bidding, for a total of $5bn.

Shortly afterwards, he and other young entrepreneurs doing business with the Venezuelan government were nicknamed "bolichicos", a slang term combining the words Bolivarian – referring to Chavez's socialist revolution - and chico, meaning boy.

Betancourt's lawyer rejects the label.

"It's a term coined by the media, used to describe a group of young people whose only commonality is their success," Jon Sale, the businessman's lawyer in the US, told BBC News Mundo.

Derwick Associates claimed to have completed all of its electrification projects.

The empire grows, and so do the problems

But anti-corruption organisations such as Transparency Venezuela and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project allege that several projects were either not finished or were carried out incorrectly.

A 2018 report by Transparency Venezuela estimated that 11 of the projects awarded to Derwick should have cost $2.1bn. If accurate, this would mean the government would have overpaid by 138%.

Betancourt's legal team has previously rejected the accusations of overbilling as politically motivated attempted smears.

Despite criticism, Venezuelan authorities soon allowed Derwick to venture into the oil industry.

But Betancourt's business activities have not been limited exclusively to Venezuela.

In the mid-2010s, he began his international expansion by acquiring a stake in the Spanish sunglasses company Hawkers, becoming its majority shareholder and president in 2016.

He also acquired banking entities in Switzerland and Africa.

Today, Betancourt's business network encompasses some 50 companies distributed across 16 countries, according to investigations by Transparency Venezuela.

In 2013, the former US ambassador to Venezuela, Otto Reich, filed a lawsuit in an American court against Betancourt and two of his associates for "paying large sums to [Venezuelan] public officials in exchange for awarding them contracts".

The diplomat's lawsuit was dismissed five years later, but the businessman's legal troubles did not disappear.

In recent years, judicial authorities in Spain, Switzerland, Andorra and the US have opened investigations against Betancourt and other "bolichicos" for their alleged involvement in various corruption schemes related to PDVSA.

He has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing.

In 2025, the businessman again made headlines when he was detained twice by British police in London, where he had settled in recent years.

A few days later, Spanish authorities raided Alamín Castle, a palatial estate that Betancourt owned in the province of Toledo.

Both swoops were reportedly linked to an investigation into alleged money laundering initiated by the Swiss public prosecutor's office.

Regarding these allegations, Betancourt's lawyer suggested he was being targeted because of his associations with the other young, brash Venezuelan businessmen.

"This is a group of very successful young entrepreneurs... some have broken the law and others haven't, but they've all been lumped together," Sale, the attorney, told BBC News Mundo.

Secretary of State Rubio defended the partnership with Betancourt

So why did the US choose Betancourt as a partner?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in an interview with Venezuelan journalist Sergio Novelli, gave three reasons.

"He has a track record of being able to produce oil," he stated first.

Some experts claim that Nabep currently produces around 180,000 barrels of crude per day, just behind Chevron's more than 200,000.

But others question the accuracy of these figures.

Rubio went on to point out that Betancourt was not currently being investigated by the US.

Finally, Rubio offered a third reason: "He is an individual who strongly supported the opposition."

Unlike others who prospered economically under Chávez, Betancourt and his associates didn't seem to identify ideologically with the late president's movement.

"They simply saw a business opportunity and took advantage of it," Batiz said.

And when the winds shifted, Betancourt shifted with them, forging a relationship with opposition leader Juan Guaidó, during Trump's first term.

That connection helped him make inroads with US officials like Mauricio Claver-Carone, the former US Special Envoy for Latin America, and other figures close to Trump, such as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, according to Boyd, the Venezuelan journalist.

But when he was involved in a failed attempt to oust Nicolás Maduro in 2019, the then-Venezuelan president retaliated against him, removing him from the oil business and forcing him to live between Madrid and London.

The contacts Betancourt established with the US were reportedly crucial in easing the legal pressure against him in late 2025.

Right place, right time

According to the Washington Post, US authorities urged Switzerland to drop its extradition request against the businessman before the British courts.

The request was granted by the Swiss authorities, and last May a London court lifted the travel ban placed upon him.

"Switzerland did not present the evidence requested by the English judges to support its extradition request, and therefore the travel ban was lifted," Betancourt's lawyer told BBC News Mundo, while acknowledging this does not necessarily mean the end of the Swiss investigations.

According to Axios, in the first minutes after the military operation on 3 January that concluded with US forces seizing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, Betancourt spoke with then-Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez and convinced her to speak with Rubio.

This version was corroborated by his lawyer.

"He acted as an intermediary," said Sale. "He had nothing to do with Maduro's departure, but since he had everyone's trust, he became an intermediary."

On Wednesday, Delcy Rodríguez, now interim president of Venezuela, defended Betancourt, saying he has no pending cases in that country or the US.

"Often a person is judged in the media before in the courts," she said in the oil baron's defence.

For those who have followed Betancourt's career for years, one thing is clear.

"He's very skillful," Boyd concluded.

"He always manages to be where he needs to be to avoid problems and make money."

“I mean…how fun is this?!” Kotb wrote. “Sandra and Nicole together again! We laughed, we caught up, we talked Practical Magic 2. Can’t wait for you to see our conversation soon!”

The news anchor also opted for a sleeveless silhouette, selecting a black-and-white halter dress featuring polka dots and florals. As for Bullock, she sported an olive-green pussybow blouse and pinstriped trousers.

Earlier this week, Kidman channeled her innerGillian Owens in a boho-chic Zimmermann frock.

On August 31, photos shared by hairstylist Adir Abergel depicted the Big Little Lies alum in a semi-sheer paisley dress. Her high-neck maxi also featured dramatic bell sleeves and lace trim.

Kidman’s hair was styled with full fringe, similar to her character’s look in the original film, while her makeup consisted of bronze eyeshadow, pink blush, and nude lip liner.

Kidman and Bullock reprise their roles as Gilly and Sally Owens in the sequel to 1998’s Practical Magic, which comes out on September 10. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also return to the franchise, while Maisie Williams, Joey King, Lee Pace, and Xolo Maridueña round out the main cast.
