Here we go again. A woman-led superhero movie is out in theaters, and people can’t stop gleefully bashing it, as well as prematurely analyzing its performance based solely on its opening weekend earnings.

And okay, I'll admit it — before I watched *Supergirl* in a movie theater this past weekend, my expectations were medium to low.

Part of the reason was the reviews; the second film in the reboot of the DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran received a “rotten” score of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes (the audience score is much more positive). Another reason is superhero blockbuster fatigue. I’ve seen nearly every live-action superhero movie in theaters during its opening weekend for the last 20 years. I’m a fan of the genre, but studios are pushing them out quicker and quicker. Audiences barely get to breathe between sequels and spinoffs.

Yet I loved Gunn’s *Superman*, which opened last summer to positive reviews all around and earned $618 million at the global box office.* *Gunn did not direct *Supergirl*, but I trusted his vision after last year’s hit. Plus, *House of the Dragon*’s Milly Alcock was leading the film, so how bad could it be?

As it turns out, *Supergirl *isn’t bad at all. Directed by Craig Gillespie (*I, Tonya*) and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is a fun detour that gives a backstory to Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. Based on the critically acclaimed comic book series *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow*, it follows Kara as a reluctant (and often drunk) superhero who teams up with Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a teenage girl seeking revenge after her family is murdered.

Although the plot is darker than *Superman*’s, the film still feels like it's in the same universe as last year’s hit. The visuals, dialogue, and world-building are all in line with the new DCU. I was entertained for the duration of the film, which, in case we forgot, is the goal of every moviegoing experience! I can’t say the same for every other superhero film released in the last few years, yet many of those films weren’t judged as harshly.

So why are people acting like *Supergirl *is the worst movie ever made? (One critic even said it had the “worst script I can remember.”) There’s a simple answer: misogyny. While it doesn’t apply to every negative review and reaction to the movie, the growing hatred and resentment of women across the world have definitely impacted women-led superhero films.

How this A-lister ended up in 'Supergirl'

In the weeks leading up to the June 26 release of the film, men mocked 26-year-old Alcock’s appearance across social media. The narrative was clear: Alcock, who spends most of *Supergirl* wearing loose T-shirts and minimal makeup, wasn’t styled to fit the male gaze. It’s quite the opposite: with a human trafficking plot tied to the villain, Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts), the story calls out those who sexualize young girls and women.

Additionally, Kara doesn’t have a love interest, and the film isn’t interested in giving her one. *Supergirl *is a story about a depressed, super-powered woman who is pulled out of her bar-hopping to help other people and find her purpose.

To be clear: The story isn’t for everyone, and, despite everything I wrote above, I don’t think you’re a bad person if you don’t like it.

But we need to talk about how the public responds to women-led stories in a genre that historically has been consumed by male-majority audiences. *Supergirl* was set up to fail with the backlash that started as soon as the first trailer hit the internet. Now, after an opening weekend that earned the film $38 million domestically against a budget of over $170 million, everyone is quick to call it a failure…when the film hasn’t even been in theaters for a week. DC Studios doesn’t appear to be confidently promoting its film, either.

Safran, co-chairman and co-chief executive of DC Studios with Gunn, told the *New York Times* on Monday, “While *Supergirl* didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

The statement doesn’t exactly inspire audiences to jump to see it during the upcoming holiday weekend.

*Supergirl* is not the awful film the public is being led to believe it is. It’s a decent standalone movie that gives Supergirl a backstory before she next appears with David Corenswet in 2027’s *Man of Tomorrow*. There’s humor, an emotional core, and engaging performances. It deserves more attention.

Universal is about to open a new theme park in Frisco, Texas that's more colorful than the bananas language mouthed by the Minions of the *Despicable Me* franchise. With so many things to do at the family-focused Universal Kids Resort, planning a visit can get a bit complex when it comes to figuring out which ages the new park is for.

** recently went inside the park (and its on-site hotel!) before its opening date, where Universal Creative leaders Molly Murphy and Brian Robinson spoke about which age the park is designed for — and why there's plenty for adults to do as well.

"We were really focused on children ages 3-8 and their families," Murphy tells EW of the park, which features lands themed to *Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous*, *SpongeBob SquarePants*, *Trolls*, *Puss in Boots*, *Shrek*, *Gabby's Dollhouse*, and the aforementioned *Despicable Me *franchise*. *"We kept coming back to the words 'unbridled creativity.' There's no limit. They don't understand limit," adds Robinson. "They express themselves in ways so freely. When you design in that [headspace], you give them all these ways to express themselves. That's hopefully how the park comes off to everyone."

How much does Universal Kids Resort cost?

Universal Kids Resort offers vacation packages with a hotel stay and day-based admission tickets, as well as annual pass options. Admission tickets are currently available in six different options:

- 1-day general admission (including refillable souvenir cup, starting at $69.99)

Isle of Curiosity — Gabby's Dollhouse

Isle of Curiosity is the first land Universal Kids Resort guests will encounter. It features a colorful row of trellis-like structures framing a tall diving board in the distance — one that's overrun with mischievous Minions (more on that later).

To the left, guests can browse merchandise offerings inside the park's main retail location, or purchase sweet treats from Cakey's Cupcakes, a shop inspired by the animated *Gabby's Dollhouse* character of the same name. Here, kids can experience a dance party with characters from the show, and also meet the titular character at times throughout the day.

The introductory land serves as the first experience families encounter inside the park, and sets the stage for what Murphy says is the goal anchoring this smaller park's place in the Universal lineup: "The hope is that this might be their first Universal experience or first theme park experience ever, and they'll grow up with a goal of going to one of our major destinations around the world."

This *Despicable Me*-themed land features the park's best (and most thrilling) ride: Bello Bay Cruise, a raft-style ride that sets guests on a white-water journey through playful scenes featuring Minions characters, water jets, and even a spiral drop surrounding an actual whirlpool.

The ride offers a much-needed cool-down in the blistering Texas heat, but there is a pay-to-use human-sized dryer if you get a little *too* wet during the experience. There's also a spin-dry option via Bello Bay Golf Cart Derby, a small spinning ride that's a more appropriate speed for smaller children visiting this section.

Or, if you want even more Minions moisture, there are several interactive water play areas featuring characters from the film series sprinkled throughout the land.

"When you walk into those lands, you'll see different types of design decisions," Robinson explains to EW, and that's apparent when viewing the numerous play structures and interactive experiences inside this *Trolls* area. "When you're designing for 3-8, you've got to have play. You've got to have free places where they run and express themselves, then you have dance parties, then you have sing-alongs, then you get into okay, it's your first thrill, we're going to go on a coaster!"

That philosophy carries through TrollsFest, where a large-scale stage show unfolds throughout the day in a shaded amphitheater-style venue that offers big-time *Trolls* characters singing and dancing on stage. There's also an indoor dance party led by a team member, and a vibrant merch shop decked out with disco balls, an infectiously enthusiastic staff, and an opportunity to get your face painted like your favorite *Trolls* characters that anyone can do.

For bigger thrills, children might enjoy their first roller coaster on Rhonda's TrollFest Express, a small (but surprisingly punchy, depending on where you sit, as sitting toward the back of the train offers slightly bigger thrills). If they're not up to the coaster's speed just yet, smaller children can run around on two play sets, including a web of netting inside Poppy's Playland: "Poppy lives in a forest and she loves to scrapbook, so that entire land is expressed through an exuberant scrapbooker," Robinson adds of the creative throughline for this area.

Universal Kids Resort answers the film series' age-old question: What *are* you doing in Shrek's swamp? The land offers a range of activities, from the *very* young (there are two play areas, including one *super* wet interactive zone and a playground) to older kids who want to take the wheel behind the Shrek & Fiona's Happily Ogre After ride.**

"Shrek decides to tell his love story over again and creates that entire land as a love note to Fiona, and he's doing it for the triplets," Robinson says of the land — the ride through which sees Shrek recreating his love story with Fiona via colorful wooden storyboards that guests ride through in swamp buggies constructed by the green ogre himself.

Perhaps the most immersive themed land inside the park, *Puss in Boots* Del Mar transports guests to a Spanish-inspired town that includes one of the park's best dining options and a thrilling swing ride that's zippier than it looks from the ground.

The most impressive part of the land is, however, *Mama Luna’s Adopt a Kitty Day!*, a stage show featuring incredible acts of puppetry from skilled performers.

Jurassic World Adventure Camp

Welcome to a kids-sized version of* Jurassic World*, which adapts the thrills of the main Universal parks' *Jurassic*-themed lands for small kids on the hunt for bigger thrills inside the park.

Inspired by Netflix's *Camp Cretaceous *animated series, Adventure Camp hosts the park's wildest roller coaster: *Jurassic World:* Cretaceous Coaster, which ends with a surprise reveal of the park's sole animatronic figure (spoiler alert: Fans of *Camp Cretaceous*' Bumpy will be very pleased if they look to the right on the ride's brake run.)

Between meeting a baby velociraptor (yes, team members carry them around this area!), other rides here offer moderate thrills, via the Pteranodrop tower attractions and Mr. DNA's Double Helix Spin that takes guests high above the park on an experience that draws aesthetic inspiration from the animated character who first appeared in 1993's *Jurassic Park* film.

The park's other standout dining location is also in this area, as the *Jurassic World* Canteen boasts an eclectic menu with chicken and beef skewers and a Nathan's hot dog wrapped in an empanada crust. Pickier eaters can also order up an adorable display of dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets scaling a mountain of mashed potatoes with broccoli trees and a river of sauce.

Thanks to Universal Kids Resort, you, too, can feel what it's like to live in a pineapple under the sea. Here, guests can plunge down to Bikini Bottom to meet characters from the *SpongeBob *animated series, ride an array of spinning rides (some of which get you wetter than others, like Bobbing Barrels), play carnival games, and more.

Visitors can also snack on the sweetest offerings in the entire park in this section, where the Goofy Goobers ice cream shop includes a life-size recreation of the notable *SpongeBob* franchise treat, the Triple Gooberberry Sunrise sundae.

The Universal Kids Resort Hotel has several room options, all of which include bunk beds and colorful interior design accents mirroring the hues used in various lands around the park.

A colorful, neon-lit, rainbow-arched entryway in the main lobby leads to the Curiosity Café, the hotel's only dining option, and a full-service bar for adults. In addition to its standard menu (chicken sandwiches, burgers, flatbread/pizza, vegetable curry, salads), the restaurant also has Starbucks drinks and a soft drink machine that, in typical Universal parks fashion, includes a wide array of fountain drinks — and even Universal Kids Resort-exclusive flavors.

One drawback to the hotel's restaurant, however, is the lack of gluten-free bread and pizza crust, which is easily available at other Universal parks, and an option that we hope to see here in the future.

The hotel also features a moderately sized pool that includes a unique feature: Underwater speakers, so you can feel (and hear!) the bass of the tunes blasting through the air while beneath the surface as well.

What can adults do at Universal Kids Resort?

While Universal Kids Resort was created with attractions aimed at kids ranging in age from 3-8, there's plenty for adults to enjoy both inside the park and at the on-site hotel.

The Universal Kids Resort hotel has a full bar to the left of the Curiosity Café entrance, featuring a colorful menu of playfully named cocktails. EW's personal favorite was the Paloma Juice Box, though a range of different liquors, wines, and beer are also available. (There are additional carts serving alcohol peppered throughout the main park.) Adults are also permitted to take their drinks to the large hotel pool (which doesn't get more than four feet deep — ideal for kids and adults) to the right of Curiosity Café as long as they ask for plastic cups from the bartenders.

There's also a gym on site for adults to prep a workout, either to amp up for a day in the park or to get those extra steps in afterward.

The German media reacted with shock and condemnation after the four-time World champions were knocked out of the 2026 edition by Paraguay.

Germany have failed to reach the last-16 in any of the past three tournaments, haven’t won a World Cup knockout game since the final in Rio de Janeiro in 2014.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, who at the age of 38 became the youngest coach in a World Cup knockout ⁠stage in 40 years, opted for an offensive line-up, giving ​his ⁠team's top scorer in the tournament, Deniz Undav, his first start.

The Germans thought they ⁠had snatched a winner in the 102nd minute when defender Jonathan Tah headed in a corner at the far post but after a ‌lengthy VAR review the goal ​was disallowed for a foul on the keeper.

They then ‌saw Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah fail ​to score from the spot before Jose Canale, after two misses by the South Americans, kept his composure to seal Paraguay’s win.

Bild called it a “disastrous performance … In their first World Cup knockout match since winning the title in 2014, Julian Nagelsmann's team delivered a truly awful performance for much of the game. Slow. Boring. Lethargic. It's another German football nightmare!”

De Zeit bemoaned a “lack of imagination” and accused the team of beating themselves. “They have lost all sense of their former glory,” Christian Spiller wrote, pointing to a wider decline in German football beyond the powerhouse of Bayern Munich.

This exit was even more “embarrassing” than that of 2022, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung, when Germany were knocked out in the group stage, because the team were somewhat unlucky in Qatar. Not this time, when they simply didn’t have the answers.

There was also some sympathy for the German team after they were denied what appeared a legitimate goal by Tah in extra time.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp likened Tah’s disallowed goal to many Arsenal had successfully scored throughout the Premier League season.

Klopp, who is working for German television during the World Cup, told MagentaTV: “If the goal is illegal, then Arsenal won’t be English champions. They’ve scored 60 per cent of their goals that way. We [Germany] win the game when the ball goes in. So, of course, this is brutal.”

Elsewhere, French outlet L’Equipe called it the “biggest shock of the World Cup so far” and Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport hailed Paraguay, who “fought with great heart and determination for every ball”.

And in Spain, Marca’s story ran: “There's nothing left of Germany. Not even in the penalty shootout.”

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Soccer fans clashed with police in The Hague and celebrated in Casablanca after Morocco sent the Netherlands to its earliest World Cup exit, eliminating the Dutch on penalties on Monday night.

The Netherlands has a sizable Moroccan community and fans of the Morocco soccer team were in a festive mood after the win, though sporadic clashes also erupted.

Police in The Hague said “heavy fireworks were set off” in the Schilderswijk district, and that police officers were pelted with fireworks and stones. Riot squads charged the crowd and used a water cannon to break up the gathering.

“A few individuals have been arrested for committing open violence,” police said.

As the penalty shootout reached its climax, the tense silence inside a coffee shop popular with fans in Casablanca, Morocco's largest city, gave way to a deafening roar when Ismael Saibari buried the decisive spot kick, sending his team into the Round of 16.

The celebrations soon poured into the streets, with flares and fireworks cracking overhead, horns blaring and engines revving as fans celebrated deep into the night.

Despite the late kickoff and the workday ahead, dozens of jubilant fans gathered on a main boulevard in Casablanca around 5 a.m. local time, dancing in the streets, waving Moroccan flags and chanting, “Canada, we’re coming for you."

Morocco moved on to face co-host Canada in the next round on Saturday. The Atlas Lions previously beat Canada 2-1 in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Expectations are soaring in Morocco as supporters dream of another historic run like four years ago, when the country became the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals.

Elliot Page shared photo and video of himself with seriously ripped abs.

The actor says he's become 'hooked' on boxing with the help of a coach.

Page will appear on movie screens as part of next month's The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan.

Elliot Page is ripped and has the snapshots to prove it.

"I've been incredibly fortunate to train with @coachnol," he captioned photo and video that showed him with at least a six-pack on social media. "He's a brilliant teacher, not just in the way he breaks down complex movements, but also in his strategic understanding of boxing and his thoughtful approach to the psychological side of the sport."

Page explained continued, "Training with Nolan has become an essential part of my life. If you’re in NYC and looking, I can't recommend him highly enough. Just be warned, you may end up getting as hooked as I am."

Page has made a regular thing of jumping in the ring to spar.

Fans cheered on the development, writing comments like "Holy f---ing abdominals elliot," "Elliot is so incredibly shredded oml," "Dude, you’re ripped af. What the fuhhhh?! Incredible," and "You could do laundry on them abs."

"THATS MY ACHILLES," one supporter commented, a reference to Page's casting in Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film The Odyssey, which arrives in theaters July 17.

While it had been suggested that Page would portray Achilles, his actual role remains unclear.

But that hasn't stopped haters from criticizing the film's cast. These critics lamented not only Page's participation, but the choice of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy.

Last month, businessman Elon Musk, who had long protested the Oscar winner's casting, claimed that Nolan, who has two Oscars for his film Oppenheimer, put Nyong'o in his movie because he "wants the awards."

The ally of President Donald Trump also specifically called hiring Page for the film "one of the dumbest and twisted things I've ever heard."

For her part, Nyong'o said simply in an interview with Elle last month, "This is a mythological story."

Page has said that he appreciated being reunited with Nolan, who directed the actor in 2010 psychological thriller Inception.

"I was just completely jazzed and excited," Page said in October during an X-Men panel at New York Comic Con. "I basically went and met with Chris and talked about the part, then sat in a room and read the script. It was such a joy to come back."

The cast also includes Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, and Travis Scott.

The Odyssey arrives in theaters July 17.

CHICAGO (AP) — The banged-up Chicago Cubs placed utilityman Matt Shaw and right-hander Ethan Roberts on the injured list on Monday.

Shaw has a sprained left hand and Roberts is out because of elbow inflammation. Outfielder Kevin Alcántara and right-hander Gavin Hollowell were recalled from Triple-A Iowa before a 3-2 victory over San Diego in the opener of a three-game series.

The 24-year-old Shaw was on the IL from May 20 to June 9 because of mid-back tightness. He hit .257 with two homers and eight RBIs in 14 games after he was activated from the IL.

“I think there’s a world where he’s swinging a bat by the weekend,” manager Craig Counsell said. “I think as soon as we get the inflammation out, we think we can move forward pretty quickly, so there’s a chance that one’s a minimum (stint).”

Shaw had been serving as Chicago's primary right fielder since Seiya Suzuki hurt his right knee on June 13. Counsell said veteran Michael Conforto will get more regular time in right with Shaw out. Conforto hit an RBI single in the victory over the Padres.

The 28-year-old Roberts is the 13th Cubs pitcher on the IL. He has a 4.21 ERA in a career-high 23 appearances out of the bullpen. He pitched in 11 games in June.

“Ethan’s been one of the guys that has pitched a lot,” Counsell said. “I don’t think we have anything serious here, but it’s just, we got to give him a break, basically.”

Counsell said closer Daniel Palencia could begin throwing this week. The right-hander was placed on the IL on June 16 with elbow inflammation.

Starter Jameson Taillon is scheduled to throw live batting practice against Chicago hitters on Tuesday. The veteran right-hander strained his left hamstring in the second inning of a 2-1 loss to San Francisco on June 7.

Bradley Beal will become an unrestricted free agent after declining his $5.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Clippers, ESPN reported Monday.

Beal, a three-time All-Star guard with the Washington Wizards, saw his scoring decline in two seasons with the Phoenix Suns and played in just six games for the Clippers before he had season-ending surgery for a hip fracture.

Beal signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Clippers in July 2025. The second year carried the player option.

While Beal was sidelined, the Clippers got off to a 6-21 start before Kawhi Leonard led a midseason turnaround. The franchise still chose to trade James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers at the deadline, and though they finished above .500 at 42-40, they lost the 9-versus-10 play-in game to the Warriors.

Beal turned 33 on Sunday, and his next steps are unclear. He managed just 8.2 points per game in his six Clippers appearances at the start of the season. He has averaged 21.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists over 807 career games with Washington (2012-23), Phoenix (2023-25) and the Clippers. He is a career 37.6% 3-point shooter.
