Stephen Colbert has nothing but kind words for his replacement.

After 11 seasons on “The Late Show” and an abrupt cancellation from CBS last summer, Colbert is preparing to bid farewell to late night next Thursday. The network has said that the show’s 11:35 p.m. hour will next go to Byron Allen’s comedy talk show, “Comics Unleashed.”

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Colbert reacted to the news that Allen would replace his show with a simple, “God bless him.”

“I know Byron. We got to know each other last year, actually. He’s fascinating,” he added, also noting Allen’s history with Johnny Carson, who hosted “The Tonight Show” from 1962 to 1992.

“I said, ‘Hey, congrats. I heard you got the time. Good for you,’” Colbert continued. “‘Wouldn’t it be lovely if you could drop Mr. Carson a note?’”

Allen caught his big break in 1979, when the then-18-year-old became the youngest comedian ever to perform on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” just days before graduating high school.

Since then, Allen has built a media empire through the Allen Media Group, founded in 1993, which has launched multiple 24-hour HD television networks, according to the company’s website.

Per Variety, Allen had been pursuing the 11:35 p.m. slot that “The Late Show” holds ever since CBS announced it would end.

“If they’re looking for a show, my hand is already up,” the comedian and businessman said during New York’s Advertising Week event last October. “Fifty years, I’ve been waiting for this moment. Definitely, I’m going for it. … I’m investing millions and millions of dollars to prove myself at 12:35.”

CBS announced its deal with Allen in April, giving him the full 11:35 p.m. hour to air back-to-back episodes of “Comics Unleashed” Mondays through Fridays. Allen will also continue to own the following hour, as his comedy game show “Funny You Should Ask” shifts its schedule.

“I created and launched ‘Comics Unleashed’ 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh,” Allen said in a statement at the time. “I truly appreciate CBS’ confidence in me by picking up our two-hour comedy block of ‘Comics Unleashed’ and ‘Funny You Should Ask,’ because the world can never have enough laughter.”

Allen will officially own the “Late Show” slot once Colbert airs his final broadcast May 21.

Colbert told THR that he still has one dream guest in mind before signing off this month. “The pope is my white whale,” he said, referring to Pope Leo XIV.

But as far as his late-night legacy is concerned, Colbert just has one goal: to be “remembered as a comedy show.”

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians manager Stephen Vogt will miss his second straight game Monday night because of a viral infection.

Bench coach Tony Arnerich, who is Vogt's housemate in Cleveland, will serve as acting manager again when the Guardians host the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game series.

He said Vogt is feeling better and should be back in the dugout on Tuesday night.

“He is on the second floor, and I’m in the basement,” Arnerich said. “If we lose again, I might be out on the lawn.”

Arnerich managed the Guardians through a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Vogt was the AL Manager of the Year in both 2024 and 2025, his first two seasons as a major league manager.

Audiences hate Mars, it seems.

Back in 1996, Tim Burton's chaotic sci-fi/comedy "Mars Attacks!" was panned by critics and didn't do very well at the box office, making only about $101 million on a $100 million budget.

In 2000, there was a one-two punch of Martian flops in the form of Anthony Hoffman's "Red Planet" and Brian De Palma's "Mission to Mars." Both of those films were giant productions, and each one took place partially on the fourth rock from the sun. The former was a noticeable bomb, making a mere $33.5 million on an $80 million budget. The latter, based on a ride at Disneyland, made $111 million on a $100 million budget. Hollywood took three sizeable gambles on the planet Mars, and audiences stayed away.

Of course, who could forget the infamous stinkers "Mars Needs Moms" and "John Carter" from 2011 and 2012, respectively? Both films were also set mostly on Mars, and they are among the biggest bombs in Disney history. According to a retrospective in the Wrap, "John Carter" was originally going to be called "John Carter of Mars," but Disney changed the title after so many of their Mars movies tanked. It didn't help.

In an interview with Lightspeed Magazine, author Andy Weir, writer of the hit novel "The Martian," expressed some understandable trepidation. His novel was adapted by Ridley Scott into a feature film in 2015, also titled "The Martian." Eek. Weir was well aware of the Hollywood taboo surrounding Mars movies, and he recalled his fear that "The Martian" might not be made because of the planet Mars' bad B.O. track record. Luckily, "The Martian" bucked the trend. It made $630 million at the box office and was nominated for seven Oscars.

Andy Weir knew that Mars movies typically fail

To catch you up, "Red Planet" starred Val Kilmer as an engineer on a mission to Mars in the near future. For 20 years, astronauts have been terraforming Mars, but something is going awry. On the mission, he and his fellow astronauts (Tom Sizemore, Carrie-Anne Moss, Benjamin Bratt) discover that Mars has a breathable atmosphere, but also that their helper robot, AMEE, has gone haywire and started attacking people. "Mission to Mars," meanwhile, starred Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, and Don Cheadle. It's about astronauts who go to Mars and find benevolent aliens. It's really, really boring.

Andy Weir had seen both of these movies and was well aware of how badly they did at the box office. He had to cite a movie from 1990 to find the last instance of a Mars-set movie being a hit. Weir said:

"When you talk about Mars movies, there's what they call 'The Mars Curse' in the movie industry; that was actually something that was going to, potentially, be a problem in getting 'The Martian' greenlighted. The last significant commercial success that took place on Mars was 'Total Recall' with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I might be wrong; there may be something in the middle there. And it's also that some things people don't like were also commercial successes. I actually liked 'Mission to Mars,' with Gary Sinise. Didn't like the one with Val Kilmer as much."

Weir was right. There is no Mars-set movie between "Total Recall" and "The Martian" that was a big hit. 1997's comedy "RocketMan" didn't move the needle, and John Carpenter's 2001 flick "Ghosts of Mars" wasn't exactly well-liked, "Doom" bombed, and the Flaming Lips movie "Christmas on Mars" was seen by about 50 people.

Not all Martian movies are created equal

Andy Weir was diplomatic, though. Although Martian movies didn't do well overall, there was no reason, in his mind, why they shouldn't. He noted that the various Mars movies, even going back to a glorious cult classic from 1964, are all different and tend to bomb for different reasons. The planet Mars is not the culprit. Weir noted:

"I think Mars is a big topic. 'The Martian,' 'John Carter,' 'Mars Needs Moms,' and 'Santa Claus Conquers the Martians' all took place on Mars, but those movies are not, in any way, similar. I think comparing movies that take place on Mars is not that productive. It's like saying 'Cloverfield' took place in New York City and so does the TV show 'Friends'; let's compare them."

Although, to be fair, there are fewer people living on Mars than in New York City (as far as we know).

It should be noted that Ridley Scott's "The Martian" has the look, texture, and scientific knowledge to feel authentic. When Matt Damon gets stranded on Mars, his survival techniques seem plausible. Both Weir and the Lightspeed Magazine interviewer noted that "Red Planet" was bad because the astronauts didn't behave like astronauts. They yelled at, punched, and killed one another. Weir noted that real astronauts don't get into screaming matches like in the movies, because they have to work as a team to survive in space. Weir said that astronauts are psychologically vetted and wouldn't be getting into action-packed fights if they were in space. Fighting is a movie thing.

And maybe that's the lesson here. If you want to set a movie on Mars, don't do action movie things. Do astronaut things instead. Your movie just might be better.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Byron Buxton doubled off the wall in left-center with one out in the 11th inning, scoring automatic runner Matt Wallner, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 on Saturday night.

Buxton also drove in Minnesota’s first run and had its only other hit, belting his 22nd career leadoff homer on the third pitch of the game from Tanner Bibee. The Twins and Guardians each finished with two hits.

Cleveland loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and 10th, but Eric Orze (1-1) worked his way out of both jams in his 1 2/3 innings. Luis García pitched the 11th for his first save.

Rule 5 Draft selection Peyton Pallette (1-2) allowed one unearned run in two innings as AL Central Division leader Cleveland had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Buxton has 13 homers — all in his last 23 games — and is two behind MLB leaders Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox. Minnesota is 20-40 against the Guardians since the start of the 2022 season.

The Guardians tied it at 1-all in the fourth when José Ramírez singled off Joe Ryan, stole second base and scored on Kyle Manzardo’s hit up the middle. Ryan worked six innings, giving up two hits.

Bibee, who has five losses and four no-decisions this season, struck out a season-high nine over six innings.

In the sixth, Bibee collided with catcher Austin Hedges when both were attempting to grab a popup by Brooks Lee. Hedges dropped the ball, Bibee was charged with the error and Lee ran to second base, but was stranded there.

The first pitch was delayed by 2 hours and 6 minutes because of heavy thunderstorms.

Guardians RHP Gavin Williams (5-2, 3.28 ERA) pitches the three-game series finale against Twins RHP Andrew Morris (1-1, 4.96).

Texas football sets GPA record as Sark's academic push pays off

While the Texas Longhorns are preparing for, what is hopefully, a banner season on the football field, off the field, the Longhorns have reached new heights in the classroom. The team posted a 3.36 composite GPA this spring, a program record.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has stressed the importance of academics and its link to athletic success. Sark believes it shows personal discipline that transfers to the gridiron, saying, “Who you are some of the time is who you are all of the time!”

“When I got hired in January of 2021, the team GPA was 2.33,” Sarkisian said last season. “We were a 5-7 football team that fall and had zero NFL draft picks. Now, we’re seeing the results both on the field and in the classroom."

The team posted a 3.31 GPA during the spring 2025 semester, setting a new program record at the time. That topped the 3.27 GPA from fall of 2024.

Sark uses the University of Texas' vaulted academic reputation in his recruiting pitch. UT is a Public Ivy and one of the best public schools in the world.

Sarkisian joined the 3rd & Longhorn Podcast this week and laid out how he sells it all to elite recruits.

"I think we've got the best product in the US," he told the podcast hosts. "All the while that's occurring at a Top 5 Public Institution in the United States. Name another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, but on the flip side is getting compared to Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama on the football field," Sarkisian said.

Not every player makes the NFL. By making sure his players pay attention to academics, Sark is making sure they are set up for a successful future.

In an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE, the actor—who executive produces and narrates the series— and two historians detail Germany's advancement into Poland alongside archival footage from the war

Nearly three decades after starring in Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks is heading back behind enemy lines.

The actor, 69, who portrayed Captain John Miller in the Oscar-winning 1998 war drama, is revisiting the deadliest conflict in history for a new generation in the History channel'supcoming docuseries World War II with Tom Hanks.

In an exclusive clip from the 20-episode series shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Hanks — who also serves as an executive producer and narrator — joins historians in painting a deeply human portrait of the war.

“In less than a month, a major European nation has been removed from the map,” Hanks says as archival footage shows soldiers in combat and bombs detonating. He adds, “In the first 24 hours of the invasion, the Germans take out railroads, bridges and airfields. The destruction paves the way for their army to advance deep into Poland.”

Footage shows grieving Polish civilians and bodies being carried away, and historian and Sam Houston State University professor Jadwiga Biskupska explains, “Polish civilians experience modern war in an unbelievably horrifying way. They see people killed. It’s a nightmare.”

Alexandra Richie, a historian and professor at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, adds, “The Poles have a modern army. It’s the fifth largest army in the world, and it’s equipped with modern tanks, with all sorts of artillery and armored trains.”

“But Hitler has been putting almost all his resources into equipping the military,” she continues. “The Poles were outgunned.”

The trailer further explores the invasion of Poland and the devastating early days of World War II. “Despite those odds, the Poles are determined to defend their country,” Hanks says as the clip ends with additional wartime footage.

The first three episodes of World War II with Tom Hanks premiere on May 25. The docuseries is part of the HISTORY Honors 250 campaign, leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States in July.

In 2019, Hanks reflected on the lasting significance of Saving Private Ryan in an interview with NBC News, emphasizing the importance of remembering the individuals who sacrificed their lives during D-Day and throughout the war.

“If we ever forget that it was a bunch of individuals that went over, and they all had names like Ernie, and Buck and Robert — that’s when we’ve done a bad job of being citizens of the world, I think,” he said.
