Eric André has made a career out of making people extremely uncomfortable in the name of comedy, and he’s at his best in the movie *Bad Trip*.

A hidden camera comedy prank movie in the style of *Jackass*, *Bad Trip *is about Bud and Chris (André and Lil Rel Howery), two friends who take a road trip from Florida to New York City in search of a woman Chris likes (Michaela Conlin), while struggling to evade Bud’s criminal sister (Tiffany Haddish), whose car they stole.

The movie's a trip to watch, and, according to André, was even more of one to film. (See: his interview with EW where he talks about how one particular prank in the movie almost got Howrey killed.) A nice addition to the prank-ertainment genre, *Bad Trip *is fun, funny, and, at times, even heartwarming. *—Ilana Gordon*

The summer of ‘69 wouldn’t have been the same without the formation of Led Zeppelin. The rock band missed the British Invasion, but took America by storm at the end of the ‘60s, becoming the number one musical group by 1970 and one of the best-selling musical acts of all time.

*Becoming Led Zeppelin* is the band’s first authorized documentary, following the group’s creation and early years together. Featuring three of the four bandmates — John Bonham died in 1980 at 32 years old, and his story is presented through archival interviews — *Becoming Led Zeppelin *is music history told right. *—I.G.*

Episodes run the gamut from memory implants gone awry to astronauts committing familicide, though EW’s writer notes that some installments have a “dash of faithful techno-optimism” that stoners may welcome as a change of pace. *—C.S.*

Another planet is about to collide with Earth, and most of humanity is living like it’s the first act of a frat comedy. Carol, on the other hand, craves routine, and finds it with the help of a coworker (Laurie Metcalf) and friend (Gillian Jacobs), leaving audiences to debate the meaning of their own lives. *—C.S.*

The film examines the history of cannabis as it intersects with music, race, politics, and incarceration. Noted weed enthusiast Snoop Dogg is one of many musicians and artists featured in the doc, which guides viewers through pot's evolution from the jazz era until today. A film that questions whether America ever ended its War on Drugs, and if cannabis and capitalism can coexist, *Grass Is Greener *is an important document of America's cultural history. *—I.G.*

It’s difficult to sum up this surreal show, but EW’s critic took a crack at it: “It's an action-packed cartoon about humanity's spiritual reckoning with reality, and a meditative odyssey across hallucinogenic science-fictional fantasies. There are sequences bone-dripped with hard-R freakout imagery — but the vibe is whimsical, full of freewheeling conversation.” *—C.S.*

The ‘60s were a wild time, man, and if you weren’t there — or if you *were* there and it's all pretty hazy — *The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir *is here to help you tap into that special period. The film centers around Bob Weir, guitarist, singer, and founding member of the Grateful Dead.

Deadheads, music history fans, and documentary lovers will all appreciate the film, which goes deep on Weir’s childhood, his work with the rock band RatDog, and his success with the Dead, the group known for pioneering the “jam band” style that would later be popularized by groups like Phish and Widespread Panic.

Drugs and conspiracy theories go hand in hand, but what if surreal comedy was added to the mix? That’s the vibe in *They Cloned Tyrone*, a comedy that brings together powerhouse talents Jamie Foxx and John Boyega.

When Boyega’s character is fatally shot and then shows up healthy (albeit slightly amnesiac), it kicks off an investigation into a government cloning project targeting Black people. The movie has some real things to say about race and government exploitation, but it never loses its comic appeal. *—C.S.*

Wormwood (2017)

True stories don’t get much trippier than *Wormwood*, the 2017 docudrama about Frank Olson, a scientist who died under mysterious circumstances in 1953 while working for the CIA on a secret biological warfare program.

Told across six episodes, *Wormwood* follows Frank’s son, Eric Olson, as he pursues information that would clarify whether his father — an unknowing participant in the CIA’s experiments with LSD — died by suicide or was murdered by those who thought he knew too much.

Director Errol Morris stages the story using both talking head interviews and actors. But his real secret weapon lies in Eric's story: The young son who lost his father and devoted his life to exposing the truth of what happened to him. But in remembering his dad, Eric says he forgot himself, and it’s in telling this tale that audiences see the real bitterness of *Wormwood*. *—I.G.*

NEW YORK (AP) — When the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, Beth Knobel, a future TV news correspondent, was in graduate school. Emerging from class, she saw TV sets had been set up in the lobby. They were tuned to CNN, the 24/7 news channel that Ted Turner had launched about five years earlier, which was carrying the launch live.

“Shuttle launches were just kind of routine and the broadcast networks weren’t even covering them anymore,” says Knobel, who worked for CBS News in the 1990s and now teaches journalism at Fordham University. “CNN did. So when things went so tragically wrong, there they were on top of the story like no one else.”

That, says Knobel, who now teaches a class on TV’s biggest innovators, is just one example of why Turner was the biggest of them all — huge steps ahead of anyone else in his understanding of how news needed to be delivered.

Turner’s death comes at a fraught time for cable news, which has struggled to retain viewership in an era of countless media choices and abundant streaming video. CNN has not been immune; changes in the media ecosystem, the company’s financial picture and multiple editorial resets over the years have left it a markedly different entity than the one Turner built.

But that misses an important point: He built it.

“We use the word giant sometimes to describe people that really aren’t giant," Knobel says. "Ted Turner truly is a giant. He invented around-the-clock news.”

Early on, Turner saw news as something global

Many in and around the news industry struggled Wednesday for big enough words to describe Turner’s impact on how we consume news. Longtime TV analyst Robert Thompson said the issue was hyperbole-proof.

“Death and hyperbole often go together,” said Thompson, director of Syracuse University’s Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture. ”But there is no hyperbole here. I can think of very few other things in the 20th century that so dramatically changed American politics, journalism and civic engagement than the invention of 24-hour cable news.”

He does add a caveat: The real impact would not be truly felt until others started doing it. Which, of course, they did. But for a long time, and certainly well into the 90s, “CNN became almost generic for breaking news,” Thompson says,” like Kleenex for facial tissues and Xerox for photocopying.”

But it isn't just the 24-hour cycle that defines Turner’s legacy in news. A number of analysts cited, too, how he conceived of news as a global commodity.

Knobel recalls that when she was Moscow bureau chief for CBS beginning in the early 1990s, she would walk into the Kremlin and see CNN on televisions.

“That was the way in which they came to understand what the world was thinking about Russia,” Knobel says. The same was true in other seats of power across the world. “Global programming didn’t exist before Ted Turner came along and said, ‘Not only am I going to build a new channel for America, but there are a lot of people around the world that will probably want to watch this news channel.’”

All of this has become so ingrained by now that it’s hard to convey to younger people that it once didn't exist. Back in the ’70s when Turner — an insomniac — was first dreaming of 24/7 news, in many places you’d turn on your TV late at night and would see only static, a test pattern or an American flag until about 6 am.

Former CNN White House bureau chief Frank Sesno, now a media and public affairs professor at George Washington University, tells his students about the “Walter Cronkite era" — when news was delivered at an appointed time, by a voice from on high, in a 30-minute broadcast (which actually doubled the 15-minute broadcasts there once were.)

“I teach these young people and they have no idea who Ted Turner is,“ Sesno said. “I remind them this was, in fact, the world of Walter Cronkite. Ted Turner came in and and CNN was seen as an upstart, as something that wasn’t going to succeed.” Thus the derisive moniker “Chicken Noodle News,” which was echoing across the industry when Sesno joined the network in 1984 .

“When they hired me, I had zero television experience," he says.

But CNN wasn’t looking for star anchors at the time. The news was supposed to be the star. The stable of stars came later.

The first Gulf War was a turning point

For CNN, a moment of particular success came in October 1987, the year after the Challenger explosion, when 18-month-old Jessica McClure was rescued from a well in Texas after a two-day ordeal. CNN covered not only the outcome but the incremental developments — standard fare today but certainly not so then for TV.

Brooke Erin Duffy, an associate professor of communication at Cornell University, points to public appetite for that story as a key moment for CNN, which covered the “hours and hours of waiting” and allowed audiences to regularly tune in for updates.

But it was during the first Gulf War with Iraq when the entire foundation of news shifted. When other journalists left Baghdad, CNN stayed. With correspondents Bernard Shaw, John Holliman and Peter Arnett doing reports under siege from Baghdad's al-Rashid Hotel, the network changed war journalism forever.

A key factor was technology. CNN's news managers “went to Turner and said you know, there’s a war coming. We need some money to cover it, and Ted Turner said to them well what do you need?” Knobel said. ”What they did with that money is to bring in satellite phone technology that no one else had." It enabled CNN to continue to broadcast news when communications were knocked out.

“I’m someone who competed against CNN for many years working for CBS (and) I can say CNN always had a technological advantage over everybody else," she said, crediting Turner for giving his network the edge.

The 24/7 schedule of broadcasting continuous developments also vastly reshaped what it was like to actually work in the TV news industry. Journalist were increasingly expected to “be available 24/7 to satiate the public’s appetite for news," Duffy said.

After CNN found success, more and more outlets followed suit. The uptick in competition for around-the-clock content made time even more of a currency when it came to breaking news.

“I think one of the consequences is the race for eyeballs within the saturated media landscape,” Duffy said. “Time is the currency in news media.”

Valerie Bertinelli is remembering a time out on the road with her late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen that did not, in fact, rock.

The *One Day at a Time** *actress recalled getting stopped by hotel staff who mistook her and Alex Van Halen’s then-wife Valeri Kendall for sex workers when Van Halen was on tour in South America in the early ‘80s.

“I don't remember a lot about the '80s, but I do remember this story,” Valerie said on a recent episode of the *Where Everybody Knows Your Name* podcast. “Ed and Al, his brother, had gone downstairs and Al's wife at the time had said, ‘Let's go down and join them.’”

The pair then made their way to the downstairs bar, where they hung out with their rocker husbands for a bit. When Alex and Eddie decided to head back to their respective rooms, Valerie said that she and Valeri chose to hang back at the bar and promised to meet up with them again later.

However, their plan was much easier said than done.

“Valeri… and I go to the elevator to go up to the room, and they're like, ‘No, no, no,’” Valerie said, waiving her finger. When the pair asked why they couldn’t go to their rooms, she said that hotel staff “were trying to tell us that prostitutes aren't allowed on the upper floors.”

The *Hot in Cleveland *star, who had married Eddie in 1981, was quick to try and set the record straight. “I was like, ‘No, no, I have a wedding ring!’” she recalled.

And still no dice. “They would not let me up,” she said. “I had to leave the elevator, get on the [phone] — 'cause there were no cell phones in the early ‘80s — and call Ed in the room and say, ‘Can you come down and get me? Because they won't let me up. They think Valeri and I are prostitutes.’”

Ted Danson, who hosts the *Cheers*-themed podcast, joked that the hotel staff probably *still* believed that she and Valeri were sex workers even after Eddie rescued them from the lobby.

“They probably still did, just thought that Ed decided to come back and get this lovely prostitute [and] come back up to the room,” he teased.

To which a laughing Valerie replied, “Yes, so, I’ve been mistaken for a prostitute before.”

Valerie and Eddie were married for over two decades from 1981 until 2007. The couple welcomed their son, Wolfgang Van Halen, in 1991.

*The Drew Barrymore Show *lifestyle expert previously admitted that she wished she’d “been a better friend” to her rockstar ex in the year before his death at age 65 in 2020.

"I’m incredibly grateful for where we ended up the last year of his life, but I’m kicking myself that I wish I had learned what I know now earlier, so I could have been a better friend to him," she said on the *Work in Progress With Sophia Bush* podcast in March. "If I couldn't have been a good partner — because that was over — I could have been a better friend."

The Golden Globes have announced major rules changes for the upcoming awards season, and the awards body doesn't appear to be cracking down on artificial intelligence as much as the Academy did upon announcing its latest set of Oscars rules changes earlier this year.

While newly announced rules stated Thursday that "all submissions must include a disclosure describing any generative AI used anywhere in the production," the use of AI in general will not automatically bar a film or performance from contention.

"Performances submitted for acting categories must be primarily derived from the work of the credited performer," the rules state, suggesting that a partially AI-encompassing performance might still be eligible for a nomination.

However, the rules continue: "Submissions in which a performance is substantially generated or created by artificial intelligence are not eligible" for a nomination.

"The use of artificial intelligence in connection with a performance does not automatically render a submission ineligible, provided such tools are used only to enhance or support a performance that remains fundamentally human-driven and under the creative control of the credited performer, and that any such use is authorized by the performer," the Golden Globes outlines. "Additionally, submissions may not include performances generated through the unauthorized use of a performer’s digital likeness, voice replication, or biometric data, whether or not the performer is otherwise credited."

The Globes elaborates, adding that the phrase "substantially generated or created" refers to the level to which AI "replaces or materially determines the performance itself, including the performer’s expression, movement, or vocal delivery."

Outside of the acting categories, "a work submitted in any such category remains eligible provided that the core creative contributions in the relevant craft (including but not limited to direction, writing, composition, and animation) originate primarily from credited human individuals," and that the incorporation of AI or other generative tools serves only "a supporting or enhancing role rather than substituting for that human creative authorship."

In contrast, the Academy announced earlier in May that it would tighten its Oscars rules to protect actors, writers, and more from the rise of AI in Hollywood.

Among other shifts, the Academy's acting branch is now permitted to nominate "only roles credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent," while the writing branch's rules state that "screenplays must be human-authored to be eligible" for a nomination for either Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay.

The Golden Globes' new set of rules changes come after a multi-year period of transformation for the show, after a racial exclusion scandal rocked the Hollywood Foreign Press organization in 2021. Fallout eventually led to a hiatus for the broadcast, before its return amid the eventual dissolution of the organizing HFPA and more diversity initiatives aimed at welcoming a broader range of perspectives into the group's voting ranks.

British reality star Jake Hall, best known for *The Only Way Is Essex*, reportedly died following an accident in Majorca, Spain on Wednesday. He was 35.

According to *BBC News*, Hall suffered severe head injuries at a villa in Santa Margalida — an incident authorities are investigating as "an accidental death." The Spanish Civil Guard told the outlet they are now awaiting the results of an autopsy.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office also confirmed to *The Sun*: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."

The Sun reported that officers said inquiries are focused on the theory that the 6-foot-4 star smashed his head through a glass door after a night of partying. He was reportedly found in a pool of blood with fatal head wounds allegedly caused by shards of glass.

A source said: "Witnesses told investigators he had been out partying all night and decided to carry on the party back at the place he was renting. It appears from what police have been told that he became agitated, possibly from alcohol and other substances he may have consumed."

In 2015, Hall joined the cast of the long-running reality series *TOWIE*, which showcases the lives of a glamorous group of young people in Essex. While on the show, he dated fellow cast member Chloe Lewis. They had a turbulent relationship that eventually ended.

In a statement to *EW*, ITV, which distributed *TOWIE*, said: "Jake was a part of the *TOWIE* family for a number of years and we send our very deepest sympathies to his friends and family following today's very sad news."

This is not the only loss the show's community has experienced as of late. Jordan Wright, who rose to prominence on *TOWIE* in 2018, was found dead at 33 in Thailand drainage canal in March. ITV also shared their sympathies at the time.

Hall is survived by his 8-year-old daughter, River, whom he shared with his ex and Bravo's *Ladies of London: New Reign* star Missé Beqiri. The pair was previously engaged in 2018 before ending their relationship.

Beqiri's rep told *EW* on Wednesday that “at this time, Misse’s focus is on supporting and protecting their child as they come to terms with this devastating loss."

The statement concluded, "The family are asking for privacy, compassion and respect while they grieve privately.”

Anne Hathaway was always meant to be Andy Sachs.

The actress, 43, got candid about the eight other actresses who were originally asked to play her role of Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada.

“I wasn’t the first choice to play Andy Sachs," Hathaway said in a joint Capital FM interview with her costar Emily Blunt, adding that she was "actually the ninth choice."

Blunt, also 43, then asked of the other actresses, “Can you name them?” And Hathaway replied, “Of course I can, they’re tattooed on my brain all these years later.”

“It was kind of amazing, because I'm just like, ‘Why is everyone turning down this amazing part in this amazing movie?' I couldn't figure it out. So now I like to, you know, kid myself and think that it was like some kind of destiny,” the Oscar winner continued.

Blunt said there's "no one else" who could play the beloved role, to which Hathaway responded, “You’re so sweet.”

Hathaway said she continued waiting for her moment after other actresses turned down the role. "The reason I felt really strongly that I should keep putting myself forward, and I shouldn't take my eye off the prize, was because the project just had this really unbelievable, almost mystical, magnetism to it, and I could feel it,” she said.

“I just was like, 'It doesn't matter how you get on this project, just get on it,' ” the actress added.

Hathaway starred in the 2006 comedy with Blunt, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. The movie, directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, followed Andy, an aspiring journalist, as she lands a job at a competitive fashion magazine.

All four actors reprised their roles in the sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which came out on May 1, 20 years after the original.

Back in 2021, Hathaway mentioned the other actress who auditioned for her role during an appearance on RuPaul's Drag Race when contestant Rosé asked if there were any roles she had to "fight tooth and nail for.”

"I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada," she revealed at the time. "But I got it! Hang in there, never give up."

Rachel McAdams, Juliette Lewis and Claire Danes were among those who auditioned for the part. Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Kate Hudson were also up for the role, according to Marie Claire.

Hathaway, who was named PEOPLE's World’s Most Beautiful in 2026, looked back on filming the first movie in an exclusive interview.

"The thing that struck me was that when we made the first one, I was just a 22-year-old mess," she said. "I mean, I'm in such a different phase of my life. I'm really lucky. I found someone that I love so much [husband Adam Shulman]. We've been married for 17 years. We've got two kids. I just feel like my life is in a much more complete and whole place. I felt so lost when I was 22, which really worked for the character."
