- Hayden Panettiere tells EW that she still carries around lessons Wes Craven taught her on the *Scream 4 *set.

- Panettiere recalls "memories of the timing of things" — how Craven would slow the action down to "a snail's pace," but "after he put it together and edited everything, he was so right."

- She also says that the late horror auteur "set an amazing example for how I would like to be as a director, as anybody on set."**

Hayden Panettiere takes a little piece of her *Scream 4 *director, Wes Craven, with her everywhere she goes.

"I love the fact that I got to work with Wes Craven. He is amazing," Panettiere tells ** in an interview conducted in September. "I'm so sad that he left us far before his time. But he had an incredible impact on my life and on me as an actor, which I now utilize when I go into other projects."

Panettiere made her entrée into Craven's cinematic meta-slasher universe in 2011, over a decade after the release of the last entry in the franchise that the horror maven kicked off in 1996. She would return in the flesh for 2023's *Scream 6*, after providing a voice cameo to the previous year's fifth franchise entry, simply titled *Scream*. Craven died in 2015, but Panettiere says his memory endures in everything she does, thanks to the impact of some sage advice.

When asked about the biggest pearl of wisdom Craven passed along, Panettiere recalls "memories of the timing of things. So, when you're sitting, he would be like, 'This is going to feel very slow. It's gonna feel like you're moving in slow motion, but when you put the music in and you edit it together, you have to build up that anticipation and you have to hit it right on the nail on the head. You can't be a moment over. You gotta be right on the nose.'"

The director behind not only the *Scream *films but the *Nightmare on Elm Street *franchise would tell Panettiere to "'Move slow, or move slower,' and I would be like, 'Geez, this feels like I'm moving at the pace of a snail.' But watching it afterwards," she remembers, "after he put it together and edited everything, he was so right."

Panettiere speaks of Craven with the highest esteem. "He was so spectacular. I mean, he taught me also how to be on set. I would love to direct at some point in my life, and he was such a fabulous — his spirit, the person that he was, how kind he was. He really was an amazing example. He set an amazing example for how I would like to be as a director, as anybody on set, but as a director if I hopefully direct in the future," she says, adding with a mischievous smirk, "You don't have to be an ass!"****

'Scream 7' first look: Neve Campbell and Sidney's daughter team up against Ghostface

Ghostface in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group's "Scream 7."

Panettiere's career began in childhood; her first role, in the 1998 Jennifer Aniston-led romantic comedy *The Object of My Affection*, came when she was just 9 years old. Despite being only 36, she has nearly three decades of acting experience to her name, and in that time, has landed numerous memorable parts, from the indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on *Heroes*, to the rebellious country star Juliette Barnes on *Nashville*.

Still, *Scream*'s tough and snarky Kirby Reed holds a special place in her heart.

"I love that character. She is so powerful, and she is such a tomboy," she says. "I felt like I got to take the parts of me that people didn't know existed and put them into her. Like, I am that edgy tomboy who sticks to her guns."

To Panettiere, "you can't really define" Kirby, who plays a major role in saving the day in *Scream 6*. "You can't put your finger on on her. She loves guys, she loves girls, she loves the world that she lives in. She is sassy. And I got to bring all of those parts of me that I felt like I had to hide for years, I think, out in her, because I was so terrified that I was going to offend somebody."**

*Scream 7 *is just around the corner, though Panettiere's participation hasn't yet been confirmed.

Last month gave fans their first look at franchise star Neve Campbell's return to the series after she sat *Scream 6 *out amid a contractural dispute. In the official synopsis released by studio Paramount Pictures, the latest entry sees "a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life. Her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all."

It's almost time for curtains for Kristin Chenoweth's new Broadway musical, *The Queen of Versailles.*

On Monday, it was announced that her new show — which opened just three weeks ago — will close on Jan. 4, and she shared a heartfelt video on Wednesday reacting to the abrupt ending.

"I know some of you may have heard that the *Queen of Versailles* on Broadway is closing," Chenoweth said in an Instagram video filmed in her dressing room during an intermission of her show. "I just want to say that I'm so proud of this new art that we've created, and it's getting harder and harder to do."

The Tony winner went on to point out how difficult it has been the past few years for Broadway shows.

"I think about all the shows in the past couple of seasons that have come and gone, that not everybody got to see," she said. "I just love Broadway so much, and I love audiences and a live art form."

Chenoweth then thanked anyone who has seen *Queen of Versailles* at the St. James Theatre so far, and invited everyone to purchase tickets to see the show before it closes on Jan. 4.

"We'd love to see you here," she added, before encouraging people to go and see any show on Broadway right now to support the arts. "Because Broadway is the best. You have a live performance art form, and there's nothing better than to look out and share an experience with an audience."

Watch her video below:

*The Queen of Versailles* is based on Lauren Greenfield's 2012 documentary of the same name about billionaires Jackie and David Siegel trying to build a mansion in Florida inspired by the Palace of Versailles amid the 2008 financial crisis, which negatively impacted their assets and lifestyle.

Chenoweth stars in the musical with F. Murray Abraham, with music and lyrics by Oscar-winner Stephen Schwartz (featuring the first time Chenoweth and Schwartz worked together on Broadway since the original run of *Wicked*). The book comes from Lindsey Ferrentino, and it is directed by Tony-winner Michael Arden.

The musical opened Nov. 9 to negative reviews, with **'s Dalton Ross writing in a review that "the songs are just one of many problems plaguing an identity crisis of a show that doesn't quite seem to know what it wants to be." The show has grossed over $6 million so far after costing an estimated $22.5 million to launch, and was expected to run for much longer since ticketing websites had performances listed through March 29.

Chenoweth's video was cut short when a voice on the loudspeaker announced a five-minute warning to take her place for the top of Act 2 — because the show must go on, even with the end looming.**

Step aside, Domingo — Marcello Hernández has a new role.

The *Saturday Night Live* star has been cast, along with *Superman* breakout Skyler Gisondo, in *Shrek 5*.

The two actors will voice Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona's (Cameron Diaz) sons, Fergus and Farkle.

They join returning franchise stars Myers, Diaz, and Eddie Murphy (who voices Donkey), as well as newcomer Zendaya, who will play Shrek and Fiona's daughter Felicia. The three children are triplets who were first introduced as 1-year-olds in *Shrek Forever After.*

The animated movie's casting news was announced on Thursday, giving *Shrek* fans everywhere something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving.

Hernández has become a fan-favorite breakout star on *SNL* thanks to his popular recurring character Domingo — the suave, wife-stealing heartthrob who even popped up at a Sabrina Carpenter concert, where he was arrested for his hotness — among many other hilarious characters and impressions.

Meanwhile, Gisondo has appeared in many films and TV series, including *Booksmart*,* Santa Clarita Diet*,* Righteous Gemstones*, and *Licorice Pizza, *but is best known for his scene-stealing role as Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn's rebooted *Superman,* released earlier this year. He will next star in an upcoming spinoff DC TV series about his *Daily Planet* photographer, currently in development.

*Shrek 5*, which was first announced in July 2024, is directed by longtime *Shrek* filmmakers Conrad Vernon (who is also the voice of Gingerbread Man) and Walt Dohrn (who also voices Rumpelstilskin), as well as Brad Ableson (*Minions: The Rise of Gru*, *The Simpsons*).

The *Shrek* franchise began in 2001 with the titular first film, which won the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Since then, three more movies have been released, earning almost $3 billion globally, along with two spinoff films: 2011's *Puss in Boots* and 2022's *Puss in Boots: The Last Wish*. There has also been a world tour live show, Tony-nominated Broadway musical, and many fan attractions at Universal Studios Parks.

The last movie, *Shrek Forever After*, was released in 2010, and ended with Shrek's *It's a Wonderful Life*–esque alternate-reality adventure fading away, granting the ogre a renewed love for his life in the swamp as he celebrates his kids' first birthday.

*Shrek 5 *hits theaters on June 30, 2027.

The Duffer Brothers made sure their art imitated their lives in the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*.

Series co-creator Ross Duffer revealed Friday that he and brother Matt Duffer cast their high school drama teacher, Hope Hynes Love, in a pivotal season 5 role as Hawkins Elementary School teacher Miss Harris.

"High school was rough for me and my brother," Russ wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. "But Hope saw something in us we didn't see in ourselves. And she helped give us the confidence to not only survive those four years, but to move to LA and chase our dreams."**

He added, "Shoutout to all the teachers out there making a difference. And please… let's prioritize the arts in schools."

Introduced in season 5, volume I, of the hit sci-fi drama, Miss Harris a schoolteacher who previously instructed each of the Hawkins teens fighting the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell-Bower).

(Warning: Spoilers for season 5 ahead!) Her current classroom is being targeted by Vecna, in disguise as a kindly imaginary friend, for plans that have yet to be revealed. He has appeared to multiple children pretending to be their protector from monsters, and schemes to kidnap them all after starting with Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher).**

President Donald Trump snapped at yet another female reporter yesterday after she questioned his comments surrounding Wednesday's devastating National Guard shooting.**

The 79-year-old former reality star was speaking with the press at his Mar-a-Lago home on Thanksgiving Day when CBS News White House correspondent Nancy Cordes asked him about the incident, which killed one National Guard member and injured a second. **

Authorities said that suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, drove across the country from Washington state to D.C., where he allegedly shot the two soldiers just blocks away from the White House. Lakanwal is currently in custody and facing multiple charges including first-degree murder, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro confirmed on *Fox & Friends* on Friday.

During Thursday's press conference, Cordes said to Trump, "U.S. officials say the suspect worked very closely with the CIA in Afghanistan for years and he was vetted and the vetting came up clean."**

CIA director John Ratcliffe confirmed in a statement that Lakanwal was allowed to enter the U.S. "due to his prior work with the U.S. government, including C.I.A., as a member of a partner force in Kandahar," *The New York Times* reports. He was one of many Afghan individuals who came to the U.S. under then-President Joe Biden's "Operation Allies Welcome" program amid the administration's hasty withdrawal from Kabul.

In response, Trump said that Lakanwal "went cuckoo," adding, "He went nuts and that happens too, it happens too often with these people."

While speaking with the press, Trump claimed that there was "no vetting" during the process. "We have a lot of others in this country and we're going to get them out," he said. "But they go cuckoo. Something happens to them."**

However, Cordes disputed his claim: "Your DOJ IG just reported this year that there was thorough vetting by DHS and by the FBI of these Afghans who were brought into the U.S., so why do you blame the Biden administration?"**

"Because they let 'em in. Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person?" Trump fired back. "Because they came in on a plane along with thousands of other people that shouldn't be here, and you're just asking questions because you're a stupid person."

He went on to call the entire operation "disgraceful," and said that "it's almost impossible" to get people to leave once they've settled in the U.S.

Trump's response is the latest instance of him calling a female reporter names when asked about current events. Last week, he snapped at a Bloomberg journalist, saying "quiet, piggy," after she asked him if there was anything incriminating within the Epstein files.

He also called *The New York Times *reporter Katie Rogers "ugly, both inside and out" in a Nov. 26 social media post after the outlet published an article exploring how his age has affected his second term in office. **** White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later defended Trump's "piggy" comment during a Nov. 20 press briefing.

"Look, the president is very frank and honest with everyone in this room," she said at the time. "You've all seen it yourselves. You've all experienced it yourselves. And I think it's one of the many reasons the American people re-elected this president, because of his frankness."**

Laura Dern shared a tribute to her late mother, actress Diane Ladd, on what would have been her 90th birthday.

Dern shared the message on Instagram on Saturday, Nov. 29, along with a vintage black-and-white photo portrait of Ladd.

"Happy birthday to my hero, the most extraordinary person I have ever known, on what would be her 90th today," Dern, 58, began her post.

She added, "As an artist and human being, you were always loving, always dreaming, always creating, and ever in service for all. I love you, Mom."

Ladd died on Nov. 23 from hypoxic respiratory failure at the age of 89. Dern announced her mom's death in a statement obtained by PEOPLE at the time.

"My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Calif.," Dern said in the statement.

"She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created," she added. "We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now."

In a joint 2023 interview with PEOPLE, the pair shared that they had grown extremely close in recent years — in no small part because of a health scare in which doctors told Ladd she might only have six months to live back in 2019.

"We both longed to talk about the things that we've left unsaid in our life together," Dern said while recalling her mother's diagnoses. "The places we didn't go because we didn't want to hurt each other by bringing up heartbreak or trauma."

Ladd added, "I thought I was dying, so Laura and I just told each other everything. Just fixing ourselves and our relationship was a darn good beginning."

During the interview, Ladd also noted that she viewed getting older as a "gift."

"I don't believe in age. How many times around the sun you've been does not necessarily tell you how your bones feel or how much wisdom you've got. Aging gives you a gift if you're ready for it, where the blinders that you've worn all through life start to come off and for the first time, you begin to see there's a big picture," she said.

Ladd's numerous movie and TV credits include Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (and the TV sitcom Alice, based on the 1974 film), Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose. She was nominated for three Oscars and three Emmys.
