The muddy ACC football standings became even muddier on Saturday, Nov. 8.

After No. 11 Virginia (No. 14 in College Football Playoff) and No. 15 Louisville (No. 15 CFP) were upset by Wake Forest and Cal, respectively, there are now five teams with one loss or fewer in ACC play. Louisville and Miami have two losses in conference play.

Duke, who has a 5-4 record and suffered a rough loss to independent UConn on Nov. 8, still has a shot at reaching the College Football Playoff with a 4-1 record in ACC play, as wild as it sounds. It seems more and more likely for the ACC to only put one team into the 12-team CFP, coming down to whoever wins the conference title game.

Here's a look at the ACC standings after Virginia and Louisville's losses after Week 11:

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — TJ Lateef was 13 for 15 for 205 yards and three touchdown passes in his first collegiate start, Emmett Johnson went over 100 yards rushing and receiving, and Nebraska defeated UCLA 28-21 on Saturday night for its first win in Pasadena since 1993.

Playing at the Rose Bowl 25 miles from his hometown of Compton, Lateef took over from Dylan Raiola, who is out for the rest of the season with a lower right leg injury he sustained in a 21-17 loss to Southern California last week. Lateef played the final four possessions against the Trojans.

As the first true freshman to start for Nebraska since 1950, Lateef directed the Cornhuskers (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten) to scores on their first four possessions for a 27-7 lead.

"I was just really trying to soak the whole moment up," Lateef said. "It was a blessing."

Jacory Barney Jr. caught Lateef's 2-yard pass on the right side pylon, which bent over, for Nebraska's first TD after a video review. Lateef hit Johnson with a pass at the Nebraska 41 and Johnson rumbled 56 yards down the left sideline past his own bench for the score. Johnson's 1-yard TD run capped the Cornhuskers' scoring in the first half.

"Emmett is just an absolute weapon," Huskers coach Matt Rhule said.

Nebraska extended its lead to 28-7 to open the third on Johnson's 40-yard TD catch from Lateef. Chants of "Go Big Red!" filled the Rose Bowl from red-clad fans who packed the historic stadium's east stands. They also shouted out Lateef's name.

"It was cool, man," he said.

Lateef was 10 for 10 for 173 yards going into the fourth.

Already the first 1,000-yard rusher at Nebraska since 2018, Johnson had 28 carries for 129 yards and ran for one TD. He had three catches for 103 yards and two TDs.

"Most of our game plan was to stop 21 (Johnson)," UCLA interim coach Tim Skipper said. "He's a special, special player."

After a bye week, the Bruins (3-6, 3-3) were trying to bounce back from a 56-6 drubbing at No. 2 Indiana that ended their three-game winning streak.

Their only score in the first half was Jalen Berger's 1-yard run on a direct snap that tied the game 7-7. Mateen Bhaghani missed a 49-yard field-goal attempt wide left just before halftime.

Nico Iamaleava hit Anthony Woods with a 45-yard TD pass that left UCLA trailing 28-14 in the third. The Bruins closed to 28-21 on Iamaleava's 9-yard scoring pass to Anthony Frias II with 4:54 remaining in the game on a drive that began at their 3-yard line.

Iamaleava was 17 for 25 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He was the team's leading rusher with 15 carries for 86 yards.

"Nico was fantastic. Just an absolute warrior," Rhule said. "On that first drive, we hit him so many times I didn't know how long he could do that and he did it all night. I have a lot of respect for him."

Fake punt

The Bruins got gutsy with a fake punt on their own 19-yard line on their final possession in the third. After a timeout, 260-pound defensive lineman Jacob Busic carried the ball two yards to get a first down. But the Bruins were penalized for a false start and Iamaleava's pass was broken up by DeShon Singleton, forcing them to punt.

The takeaway

Nebraska: The Huskers were already bowl eligible and Lateef's cool-headed performance paired with Johnson's exploits bolsters their hopes of landing in a top-tier bowl with two games remaining.

UCLA: The Bruins have their toughest stretch ahead of them, with three ranked opponents to close the regular season. They'll visit No. 1 Ohio State, host No. 24 Washington and visit No. 20 USC.

Up next

Nebraska has a bye week before visiting Penn State (0-6 Big Ten) on Nov. 22 in Rhule's return to his alma mater.

UCLA visits No. 1 Ohio State next Saturday.

SYDNEY (AP) — New Zealand have reclaimed the Pacific Championships in emphatic fashion, storming home to a 36-14 victory over Samoa on Sunday and ended veteran Kieran Foran's 16-year international career on a high.

Trailing 14-6 at halftime, the Kiwis produced a dominant second half, running in five unanswered tries to deny Samoa their first international trophy and send home disppointed the overwhelmingly pro-Samoan sell-out crowd at Parramatta in Sydney's west.

For much of recent years, New Zealand have been overshadowed by the rise of Pacific rivals Samoa and Tonga. But Sunday's comeback, following dominant wins over both nations earlier in the tournament, was a strong statement ahead of the code's World Cup next year.

After Samoa led through tries to backs Brian To'o and Simi Sasagi, New Zealand's took control with interchange forwards Naufahu Whyte and Erin Clark, and man of the match Dylan Brown heavily involved.

Second-half tries to Isaiah Papali'i, Casey McLean, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, and another to Papali'i sealed the win against the tiring Samoans.

"The boys dug so deep — I couldn't be prouder," Foran said. "To finish on a high with this group means everything."

Samoa dominant early

With a passionate crowd firmly in their corner Samoa took an early advantage when winger To'o dived over acrobatically in the corner after being played in by former Penrith Panthers teammate Jerome Luai.

Samoa doubled its advantage when Sasagi intercepted a pass by Foran to sprint 80 meters to score under the posts.

New Zealand responded with a deserved try when Whyte ran a clever line off Clark's pass to beat the Samoan goal line defense.

Talagi added a penalty goal in the last action of the half for a 14-6 lead at the break.

New Zealand run rampant

The half-time break appeared to help New Zealand regroup as they quickly reduced the deficit to two points after Foran and Brown combined to send over Papali'i, before a Jamayne Isaako penalty goal brought New Zealand level.

Clark then grabbed a deserved try when he barged over the whitewash from close range, before James Fisher-Harris created space for Brown to send winger Casey McLean over to extend the lead to 24-14.

Late tries to Papali'i and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad completed the second half rout as Samoa visibly wilted in the final minutes of an enthralling, fast-paced contest.

Gavin Brindley also scored, Scott Wedgewood made 23 saves and Devon Toews had three assists. The Avalanche have earned at least a point in six straight games to improve to 9-1-5.

Connor McDavid scored for Edmonton. The Oilers have dropped three straight to fall to 6-6-4.

Stuart Skinner allowed four goals on 13 shots before being replaced by Calvin Pickard, who made 17 stops.

MacKinnon assisted on Colorado's first goal, picking up the 700th career even-strength point to join Joe Sakic as the only other player in franchise history to reach that mark. MacKinnon also stretched his points streak to eight games.

OTSU, Japan (AP) — Nasa Hataoka won a playoff Sunday to take the LPGA's Toto Japan Classic after the final 18 holes were washed out by all-day rain and what officials termed "unplayable course conditions."

Hataoka and fellow Japanese golfer Yuna Araki shared the lead on Saturday after 54 holes at 15-under 201 at the Seta Golf Club in western Japan.

After rain wiped out regulation play on Sunday, Hataoka prevailed on the first playoff hole to claim the title in an improvised finish and break the tie. It was her seventh title on the LPGA Tour.

Hataoka shared the lead in each of the first three rounds, with different golfers each time.

Miyu Yamashita, who won the Maybank Championship in Malaysia last week, carded a 68 on Saturday and finished one stroke behind after 54 holes.

Yamashita was followed by Shuri Sakuma (69), who finished three back, and Ai Suzuki (70), who was four off the lead after 54 holes.

Defending champion Rio Takeda, who was not in contention all week, had a 68 on Saturday and finished nine shots behind.

Minjee Lee of Australia, one of the highest profile players in the field, finished 14 behind the leaders after a 74 on Saturday.

Graham Ike logged a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double Saturday night and No. 21 Gonzaga led by double figures for the final 27:29 of an 83-68 win over Oklahoma in Spokane, Wash.

Tyon Grant-Foster came off the bench to add 14 points for the Bulldogs (2-0), who punched the ball inside at will to create a 58-20 advantage in points in the paint. Braden Huff scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while reserve Jalen Warley contributed 13 points.

Xzayvier Brown paced the Sooners (1-1) with 21 points but also committed five of their 16 turnovers. Nijel Pack added 18 points and Derrion Reid scored 11 for Oklahoma but it couldn't consistently hit shots. The Sooners made only 23 of 58 from the field (39.7%) and were 6 of 26 on 3-pointers (23.1%).

Oklahoma also couldn't keep Gonzaga off the offensive glass. The Zags collected 18 offensive boards and cashed those in for 16 second-chance points, while also scoring 14 fast-break points. They earned a 46-39 rebounding advantage, giving up just eight offensive caroms.

The Sooners led 8-3 before Gonzaga, playing a rare home game off-campus at Spokane Arena, went to work. A 12-3 run, capped by Mario Saint-Supery's layup off an Ike feed, gave the Zags control for good.

They blew the game open with a 15-2 burst starting at the half's midway point. Except for a deep 3-pointer by Grant-Foster, every other point was a layup or a short shot in the lane as Gonzaga carved Oklahoma up inside.

The margin reached 49-30 at halftime after Grant-Foster found Emmanuel Innocenti for a 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining. The Zags finished the half 22 of 41 from the field while nearly doubling up the Sooners on the glass 26-14.

Oklahoma played better basketball the second half but was simply too far behind to really make Gonzaga sweat. It sliced a 24-point deficit to 75-62 on Pack's 3-pointer with 3:24 left but Ike and Warley promptly converted point-blank looks to end any remaining suspense.

- Sydney Sweeney and the real Christy Martin discuss the harrowing true story behind the biopic of a women's boxing trailblazer.

- The one request Martin had for director David Michôd and co-writer Mirrah Foulkes: "Please don't Hollywoodize my life."

- "Everything was pulled from truth. The film is truthful from the very beginning to the end," Sweeney says.

Christy Martin, known in the ring as the Coal Miner's Daughter, made a deal with God after suffering several stabbings and a gunshot to the torso from her ex-husband, James V. Martin, in 2010. The trailblazer of women's boxing promised she would help one person before she died.

"And then I was like, 'No,' 'cause I'm arrogant, 'I wanna help one person every day,'" Martin recalls.

It's a story she tells often, first on stage at the world premiere of her biopic, *Christy*, at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September. She tells it again during a November interview with ** and actress Sydney Sweeney, who portrays Martin on screen. To date, she has already fulfilled that original promise — and then some.

"I actually got a text message from someone who was in the movie that it has saved her life," Martin tells EW. (Sweeney says she received the same text.) "Even to know the people that were in the movie — not the main cast, but just in the movie — it affected them in a positive way, we're doing what we're supposed to."

Directed by David Michôd (of the Timothée Chalamet-led *The King*), who also co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, *Christy* is equal parts underdog sports movie and harrowing survivor's tale.

Starting with Martin's high-school years as a closeted lesbian in a homophobic West Virginian community, the story follows the pioneer's personal life through her swift ascent to the top of women's boxing. It covers her emotionally turbulent relationship with her mother (Merritt Wever); her life with Jim Martin (Ben Foster), who first became her trainer and later her manipulative, abusive husband; and finally coming back to the ring after surviving a near-fatal assault by Jim, who died in 2024 while serving a 25-year sentence for attempted murder.

Martin had one request of Michôd and Foulkes: "Please do not Hollywoodize my life," she says. She means she didn't want to see anything that didn't actually happen added in for the sake of sensationalizing her story. "[Foulkes] would tell me, 'Enough crazy s--- has happened in your life, we don't have to Hollywoodize it,'" Martin recalls. "The script is real. Once I read the script, I just sat back and watched them do their thing. And boy oh boy...it was pretty amazing."

Sweeney, who also produced the movie, confirms no creative liberties like that were taken. "Everything was pulled from truth," the *Euphoria* and *Anyone But You* star says. "The film is truthful from the very beginning to the end."

The pair remembers their first meeting over Zoom. Martin acknowledges how difficult it was to sense Sweeney's energy but describes the virtual encounter as positive. They later met in person while in pre-production, after Sweeney began transforming her body through boxing and physical training.

It didn't seem like just another role to Martin. "She wants to do this because she feels like it's important," she comments of Sweeney. "I was 100 percent in, and I was open to share my story, the little details that sometimes aren't easy to talk about."

When it came to the difficult material, the team filmed all the sequences in Martin's house with Jim during the first week of production, according to Sweeney. "We started off right out the gate with the very heavy and crucial moments of Christy's life," the actress remarks.

Christy Martin

That Wednesday marked Wever's first day filming as Joyce. It was the scene where Martin first shares with her mom how scared she was of her husband, only for Joyce to turn her away and take Jim's side. "My mother passed in February. It's all real, but it's still hard to see," Martin comments of that moment. "The last thing you want to do is go to your mother for help and not get it. That scene may be harder than the attack for me to actually watch."

Two days later, on that Friday, the team shot Jim attacking Martin with a knife and a gun. Martin wasn't on set for the filming of this moment, "upon the request of everyone, I think," she says. "It protected me."

Sweeney acknowledges that a lot of thought went into that attack sequence. "It was a very heavy week," she comments, "but having a scene partner like Ben and a director like David, you know that you're in good hands 'cause you feel safe with everyone, you trust everyone, and you know that everybody also is handling this with the utmost respect and care. You talk about it, you just go hand in hand, and you dive right in."

Martin remains overwhelmed with the reaction she's seen to her story. She's been promoting the film with her now-wife Lisa Holewyne and their dog, Champ, by her side. Holewyne, also a former professional boxer, appears in the film by way of Katy O'Brian (*Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning*). After squaring off in the ring, the two developed a long-term friendship that eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship.

"Women are coming to share their story about domestic violence. There's people coming to me about sexuality," Martin says. "They're really reacting in a positive way."

For Sweeney, "It's honestly a life-changing experience in a way, of knowing that I can be a part of Christy's story that can help others."

For Martin, "This movie's bigger than Hollywood."

*Christy* opens in theaters this weekend.**
