John Daly described the American Ryder Cup fans as loyal after Rory McIlroy took immense verbal criticism from them beyond the ropes in September.
Golf fans are becoming more intense, as Wyndham Clark did not have the crowd on his side as during the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, while Matt Fitzpatrick could hear “USA” chants as he walked down the 18th fairway alongside champion Cameron Young at the Players Championship.
The most notable example was when McIlroy and the Europeans competed at Bethpage Black in New York for the Ryder Cup and some American fans verbally harassed players by shouting in their back swing and making personal comments.

“New York fans are loyal, man. They love the USA. My hat’s off to Rory McIlroy because they absolutely destroyed him,” Daly told Hard Rock Bet. “And the thing is, what they have to understand is, it didn’t bother him."
McIlroy was back on Long Island for the 2026 U.S. Open and drew a massive New York crowd that seemed to be in favor of the Northern Irishman, but the Ryder Cup was a different beast.

“He played great, and the whole European team played great, and I think what we must realize is the fans are so awesome—they’re going to get behind the U.S., like the Europeans get behind the European team,” said Daly.
“It’s probably going to get ugly when we go to Europe again, so our guys are just going to have to be able to put up with it. And the Europeans—my hat’s off to them—the way they dealt with it. I thought Rory was a gentleman the way he handled it, and he kept winning. It’s sport. That’s what it is.”
McIlroy received apologies from PGA of America’s Derek Sprague for the American’s behavior, and the World No. 2 said that behavior should never be accepted in golf.

"I take it as a compliment that they targeted me, but then at the same time, it was a tough week," McIlroy said. "That made us better as a team. It galvanized us and it really put our arms around each other."
Luke Donald and the Europeans' three-peat attempt will tee off at Adare Manor, Ireland in 2027. The U.S. recently announced Jim Furyk as the captain with Keegan Bradley stepping aside after the rough loss.
