Tony Romo's CBS career is already wobbling on thin ice in the court of public opinion, and Colin Cowherd just may have made things worse for the lead NFL analyst after reminding football fans how the former quarterback landed his role at the company.
Cowherd pointed out that CBS likely remembers how Romo pushed for a bigger contract when he was one of the top analysts on the market. Romo is tied with Troy Aikman as the second-highest-paid lead announcer behind Tom Brady.
With Romo now on indefinite leave after his OWI arrest, CBS controls future negotiations once his contract ends after the 2029 NFL season.

CBS placed Romo on indefinite leave after his arrest, following reports confirming that the network still planned to retain him as lead analyst alongside Jim Nantz.

Cowherd argued that Romo's recent trouble cannot be separated from the original contract Romo signed that helped make him one of the industry's most powerful announcers.
He said there was a moment when Romo had enormous leverage over CBS during negotiations. "When you go into contract negotiations, there was a moment in time that Tony Romo had tremendous leverage over CBS," Cowherd said. "And he squeezed them for every nickel."

Cowherd said that kind of win can leave bruises inside a building and, more than likely, create resentment "somewhere upstairs" with CBS executives. David Berson serves as the president and CEO of the network and replaced Romo with JJ Watt until his eventual return.
"I've always thought with the CBS execs, they don't defend him quite as quickly," Cowherd said on House of Strauss. "Or, when this recent story came out, reportedly, for the first two days nobody from CBS contacted him."
"That's what I heard from somebody who would know," Cowherd added. "And I thought, is there resentment upstairs? Because he had them. He had them dead to rights, and he got every penny he wanted."
Romo's arrest drew even more public attention after his mugshot and body-cam footage were released on social media. Police stopped him on a Milwaukee interstate, where he asked several times to call a lawyer before taking field sobriety tests.
The footage showed the Wisconsin officer refusing Romo's request. The CBS analyst then got out of the vehicle after saying that he was coming from a golf course to visit his grandparents.
Romo was arrested for a first-offense OWI, booked, released, and is scheduled to have a court appearance in Milwaukee on September 21. Romo's CBS contract has reportedly been valued at around $180 million.
