Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre shared an update on his health a year after revealing he was diagnosed with Parkinson's, saying he is in the early stages of the disease.

Favre first revealed he had the brain disorder during a congressional hearing in September 2024, when he testified in front of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Parkinson's is a "brain condition," according to the World Health Organization, that causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, pain, and other health issues." There is no cure, and it is estimated that nearly one million Americans are afflicted with the disease.

"I'm probably like most people – I thought there was just one Parkinson's and that was it. There's not. There's multiple, many forms of Parkinson's," Favre said on the "4th and Favre" podcast. "And I have what's called idiopathic, which is the most common. And I think the other thing most people think when they hear of Parkinson's is they think of shaking."

The 56-year-old Favre, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016, says he manages his symptoms with medication, but sometimes he feels like a "pretzel." Favre says his cognitive and memory functions are stable for now.

Favre adds that he hopes there is a cure and that he hears there may be one, but "I'm not holding my breath."

"I get from time to time, 'Oh you must not be too bad because you don't shake.' I have very little shaking. I have some, but it's pretty rare" Favre said. "But as I've learned, the Parkinson's that I have has three different characteristics. One of those three you'll have as the dominant side effect. It's cognitive and memory is one. Shaking and tremors is two. And rigidity and stiffness is three. I major in the rigidity and stiffness."

New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore is reportedly facing a domestic-assault charge stemming from an incident in August, new court documents revealed Wednesday.

Barmore, 26, was charged with one count of assault and battery on a family/household member, per WCVB TV in Boston.

The alleged incident reportedly took place Aug. 8. Barmore's then-girlfriend said the two got into arguments over the temperature of the house and food. As she attempted to leave the house, the woman claimed Barmore took the victim's phone. The woman then tried to leave the house and scream for help, but alleged she was thrown to the ground by Barmore, who then grabbed the woman's shirt in the neck area before letting her up.

A criminal complaint was issued against Barmore on Dec. 16. He is set to be arraigned Feb. 3, five days before the Super Bowl. With one week left in the regular season, the Patriots have already secured a spot in the playoffs, and have a shot at earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

It marks the second major legal issue the team faced in the past 24 hours. On Tuesday, it was reported that star wideout Stefon Diggs faced charges of assault and strangulation after an alleged Dec. 2 incident.

Both the Patriots and the NFL acknowledged they were aware of the charges against Diggs and declined further comment.

The team took a similar approach with Barmore on Wednesday, saying it was aware of the situation and was cooperating with the league.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel spoke with local media Wednesday, where he addressed both situations. Vrabel stressed that both Diggs and Barmore were dealing with allegations and that those shouldn't distract them or the team from staying on task in Week 18.

The NFL weighed in on the situation Wednesday, with the league saying Barmore's incident was under review under the league's personal-conduct policy. It added that Barmore — and Diggs — are both eligible to continue playing for now.

After being selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Barmore has developed into a mainstay on the defensive line. He started 15 of 16 games this season, picking up 26 tackles and a sack.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mark Gronowski threw two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Iowa to a 34-27 win over No. 13 Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Wednesday.

Gronowski was 16 of 22 passing for 212 yards, throwing touchdowns passes of 10 and 21 yards to Reece Vander Zee and DJ Vonnahme, respectively, as Iowa got out to a 21-3 lead early in the third quarter.

Vanderbilt (10-3) rallied behind Diego Pavia. The Heisman Trophy runner-up threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Tre Richardson and a 16-yarder to Joseph McVay to pull the Commodores within 24-17.

The teams traded scores early in the fourth quarter, with Gronowski making it 31-17 with a 1-yard keeper and Pavia answering with an 11-yard TD run.

Iowa (9-4) pushed the lead back to double digits with a 44-yard field goal from Drew Stevens to cap off a 13-play, 49-yard drive that took more than seven minutes. Vanderbilt answered with a 37-yard field goal from Brock Taylor to make it 34-27, but Iowa was able to close out the game with Xavier Williams running for 11 yards on a third-and-1 with 1:55 remaining and the Commodores out of timeouts.

Pavia finished with 347 passing yards. Richardson caught six passes for 127 yards and Junior Sherrill had eight catches for 123 yards for Vanderbilt.

Vonnahme led the Hawkeyes with seven catches for 146 yards and Kamari Moulton rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown. Gronowski had 54 rushing yards.

The takeaway

Iowa: The Hawkeyes are 4-3 in the ReliaQuest Bowl (formerly known as the Outback Bowl) in seven trips under coach Kirk Ferentz. It's the 11th time Iowa has won nine or more games in a season under Ferentz.

Vanderbilt: Despite the loss, the Commodores set a school record with 10 wins and signed coach Clark Lea to a six-year contract extension in November.

Up next

Iowa: Hosts Northern Illinois on Sept. 5.

TCU: Hosts Austin Peay on. Sept. 5

Twenty-three years ago this week, Miami lost the Fiesta Bowl in double overtime to Ohio State and never recovered.

Ohio State and Miami were like two ships passing in the night — the Buckeyes have since kicked their dynasty to new heights as the Hurricanes dropped several rungs down the Power Four ladder as one of the Bowl Subdivision's perennial underachievers.

That's not much of an overstatement: Miami might remain reputationally relevant, but a checkered run in the wake of that controversial loss features just one conference championship as a member of the now-defunct Big East, two division championships since joining the ACC and as many losing seasons, four, as years with double-digit wins.

Meanwhile, each of the past three permanent Ohio State coaches have won a national championship, while current coach Ryan Day has won a remarkable 87.8% of his games since replacing Urban Meyer in 2019.

Held against this backdrop, the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff at the Cotton Bowl between the No. 10 seed Hurricanes and the No. 2 Buckeyes provide an opportunity for revenge along with the chance to reverse the program's decades-long swoon and potentially jumpstart a renaissance.

Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. breaks free on a run against Texas A&M during the first round of the 2025 College Football Playoff at Kyle Field.

After years of unrealized expectations, Miami could be poised to break through and capture a landscape-shifting win against the defending national champions.

"Certainly, we've progressed a lot as a program, and these guys have worked really hard to keep earning that progress, and now we find ourselves with an opportunity here in the College Football Playoff," said fourth-year coach Mario Cristobal. "So we're really excited about that opportunity."

Looking at this season, steady progress under Cristobal yielded a team that was simply too talented and too accomplished to leave out of the playoff despite two midseason conference losses.

While a win in the opener against Notre Dame was the eventual tiebreaker in the final playoff rankings, the Hurricanes established their case with a furious four-game winning streak to end the regular season before pulling out an ugly but effective 10-3 road win against No. 7 seed Texas A&M in the opening round.

"All three phases of the game, working together to ultimately pull out a win in what a lot of people say is one of the hardest places to play in the country, and in a playoff atmosphere, elevates that even more," said senior quarterback Carson Beck.

Miami reaches CFP with transfer portal assist

As much as any team in the playoff, Miami has been transformed by the transfer portal. The offseason headliner was Beck, who came in from Georgia and struggled through his own midseason decline but has rebounded with 12 touchdowns against just one interception in his past five games.

Overall, roughly half of the Hurricanes' starting lineup was obtained through the portal, a list that includes wide receivers CJ Daniels and Keelan Marion, linebacker Mohamed Toure and defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor. Among traditional recruits, Miami unearthed a gem in three-star receiver Malachi Toney, who leads the team with 89 receptions for 992 yards and eight touchdowns.

These newcomers have joined a roster that has been built from the inside out, with offensive and defensive lines that rank among the best in the Power Four; as predicted, Cristobal has turned Miami into one of the most physical teams in the country.

Miami is "big and strong and powerful," said Day. "They've done a really good job of recruiting and adapting to the new structure of college football. They do a good job of coaching them, and you can see as the season's gone on, they've gotten better. And we know it's going to be a great challenge for both sides of the football."

Said Beck, "Our trenches on offense and defense have led this team. We go as they go. And any good football team, that's how it's going to be. And we understand the talent that they bring in their trenches as well."

Ohio State is Miami's toughest challenge of season

This program-building philosophy helped Miami pull out a win in College Station despite just three third-down conversions, three missed field goals and a potentially costly turnover in the fourth quarter.

"It was one of those games where we felt, all right, we're holding up good and we're knocking them back," said Cristobal. "I guess what I'm trying to say is the confidence that they bring to us and being able to call and manage the game is off the charts, and certainly they were the difference today."

But the Hurricanes will face by far their toughest test to date — tougher than Notre Dame, Texas A&M or anything they took on in the ACC — against an opponent in Ohio State with no discernable weakness.

Despite losing in the Big Ten championship game to Indiana, Ohio State is considered the favorite in this year's tournament after a nearly flawless regular season that saw just one win, against Texas in the opener, decided by fewer than 18 points. The highlight was the 27-9 win against Michigan to snap the Wolverines' four-game winning streak in the rivalry.

Statistically, these are opponents breathing the same rarefied air among the elite teams in the Power Four. Ohio State ranks 24th nationally in yards per game and 12th in yards per play; Miami ranks 34th and 27th nationally, respectively. On defense, the Buckeyes lead the country in giving up 213.5 yards per game and 3.9 yards per play; the Hurricanes are allowing 281.5 yards per game and 4.5 yards per play.

"Yeah, you know, they're really a fast defense," said Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin. "They're coached really well. They have really good players. And they're a very good defense. So we have a really tough challenge against us. We have to focus on our execution as an offense."

The comparison is even more striking when looking at each team's performance against opponents with a winning record. Offensively, both have averaged 6.4 yards per play in these matchups — seven games for Miami and eight for Ohio State.

Miami win would be 'transformational'

And like the Buckeyes last season, the Hurricanes look to benefit from an opening-round matchup against an SEC opponent before turning to a Big Ten powerhouse. After losing to Michigan to end the regular season and missing the conference championship game, No. 8 seed Ohio State bulldozed Tennessee and then avenged an earlier loss to Oregon in the quarterfinals.

"I think the first thing is not having the mindset of just being here," Cristobal said. "I think that's probably the opposite of our mindset. If we're blessed enough to earn the opportunity to keep playing, our only goal was to keep getting better every single week, and we feel like we did that in our last game."

A win would be transformational. Looking back at the program's rise and fall, Miami's time in the wilderness exceeds the roughly two-decade run as perhaps the sport's defining program, which included national championships in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001. But beating the Buckeyes would make a thunderous statement: We're back, and maybe back to stay.

"Yeah, we're very blessed to have this opportunity," said offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa. "At this point, we're coming to take it all. To play against Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl, it's pretty much a blessing to be here."

Rory Feek is sharing details of his family's holiday celebrations in the midst of what he described as a "challenging" stretch.

The country singer, 60, shared a blog post on Dec. 28 titled "A White Christmas," which chronicled his seasonal activities with wife Rebecca and daughter Indiana, 11.

Feek — who is in the midst of an ongoing dispute with his two older daughters Heidi and Hopie over Indiana's care — said that despite the difficulties, he was grateful to those who had shown "love and kindness" in recent months.

"Even though the last year or two have been very challenging for us, we've felt surrounded with more love and true friendship than we've ever had before, and for that, and so much more, we are truly grateful," he wrote.

The musician, who rose to fame as part of the Grammy-winning country duo Joey+Rory with late wife Joey Feek, also teased something big, saying his family had had a Christmas that they "won't forget anytime soon."

"One of the main reasons was because of an early Christmas gift we received. If there was a Santa, he came to our farm early this year – on the 23th to be exact — and our family received the gift that we had all hoped for, but didn't dare to imagine," he wrote. "A Christmas miracle, if ever there was one."

Feek wrote that while he'd "love to share more," he is saving the story of their surprise "for another time."

It remains unclear as to which challenges Feek was referring in his blog post, though it was an eventful year for the musician.

Heidi Feek/Instagram

Hopie Feek, Heidi Feek and Indiana Feek

In February, his daughter Hopie, 37, announced that her biological father is actually a man she identified as BC — not the singer, who raised her and her sister Heidi, 39, after splitting from their mother, his ex-wife (Hopie and Heidi are also currently in legal limbo with their father over Indiana, whom they have not been able to see in over a year).

Then in September, he marked what would have been Joey's 50th birthday by visiting her grave with their daughter. Joey died of cancer in 2016 at age 40, and Feek married Indiana's teacher Rebecca in July 2024.

Hopie's revelation that Feek was not her biological father sparked conflict in the pair's relationship. Though Feek wrote in a blog post that he loves Hopie as his daughter and "always will," she expressed frustration with his response, as he shared personal details of their family's history.

Rory Feek/ Facebook

"My relationship with my dad is broken. Not because of this new revelation, but because he refuses to go to family therapy," she later told PEOPLE. "Him taking the two most vulnerable conversations of my life (coming out to him, and telling him we're not biologically related) and publishing them to the world, is something we need a professional to help us navigate."

Heidi and Hopie have not seen Indiana since June 2024, as their father has not let her visit her sisters due, he says, to their differing worldviews. In a blog post that August, Feek wrote that Indiana "absolutely" misses his older girls, and asks about them "all the time and would love to see them."

Heidi and Hopie took legal action against their father over the situation with Indiana in the fall of 2024, though details of the filing remain confidential, as Indiana is a minor. Legal proceedings remain ongoing.

Miley Cyrus tells PEOPLE about writing the new song "Dream as One" for Avatar: Fire and Ash

"I've had my own experience with rebuilding from the ground up," says the musician, who lost her Malibu home to wildfire in 2018

Inspired by her Los Angeles community, Cyrus wrote about "the resilience and courage that it takes to start again," she explains

Miley Cyrus sings about resilience, love and coming together as community in the song she wrote for Avatar: Fire and Ash. As she tells PEOPLE, it all came from a personal place.

"In the title alone, Fire and Ash, I've had my own experience with rebuilding from the ground up," says Cyrus, 33, who has rebuilt the Malibu home she lost to wildfires in 2018.

The Grammy winner's new tune, "Dream as One," plays during the credits of writer-director James Cameron's third Avatar film, out now.

"I felt after we experienced the fires this year," she adds, referencing the January 2025 wildfires that devastated Los Angeles' Palisades and Altadena communities, "lately we've all had this idea of being there for each other and stepping in when your people need it."

That goes for "not just your family, but your chosen family as well," explains Cyrus, whose engagement to Maxx Morando went public Dec. 1. "And the resilience and courage that it takes to start again. And somehow finding that all you really need is each other."

During a May screening of her visual album Something Beautiful, the former Hannah Montana star called losing the home she shared with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth "the biggest blessing I've ever had in my life," saying, "what I would have told my younger self is to appreciate those darker times … they are only leading you into the light."

That ability to rise again, Cyrus tells PEOPLE, is what Avatar: Fire and Ash "is really about."

The new movie picks up where Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldaña) Pandora story left off with 2022's sequel The Way of Water, not long after the death of their eldest child and as a new Na'vi clan rises to threaten their family.

"Usually I work in the reverse order, where I'm writing a song and then creating visuals afterwards," says Cyrus of her process. "This time around I got to see the film," she explains.

"I saw it actually in kind of a work-in-progress stage, which was actually more helpful for me because I got to feel like I was really a part of the journey of creating Avatar," adds the "Flowers" singer. "I came in kind of late, so feeling like I got to be a part of building it — and to design musically and lyrically around what the themes of Fire and Ash are all about."

Cyrus readily admits she's ready to lend her songwriting prowess to any opportunities in Hollywood to participate in "what really kind of bites in a film," as she puts it.

"I really feel myself attached to songs. There's certain songs that even if they were written for the film or just a song used in the film, like 'I Will Always Love You,' you immediately think of the movie itself and they become embedded."

Nineteen-year-old sensation Macklin Celebrini is a notable new name on the final Winter Olympics roster, announced by Hockey Canada on Wednesday.

General manager Doug Armstrong's 25-man team features five players, including Celebrini, who were not part of the gold medal-winning lineup at the 4 Nations Face-Off last February. The others are forwards Nick Suzuki and Tom Wilson and goaltenders Darcy Kuemper and Logan Thompson.

NHL scoring leaders Connor McDavid (69 points) and Nathan MacKinnon (66 points) were named to the team in June along with perennial captain Sidney Crosby, fellow forwards Sam Reinhart and Brayden Point, and defenseman Cale Makar.
