Hulu is more than just a fun thing to shout if you are in an echoey canyon. (Try it.) It’s one of the finer streaming services, with great new movies and access to terrific television shows, some of which are produced in-house.

But if you look a bit further under the hood, you’ll find a deep well of offerings, including a surfeit of what I like to call modern classics. (The not-very-strict definition of which is: a beloved movie that hit theaters at some point after my birth.)

Naturally, how “classic” these movies may seem depends on your age. For some of you, you were already a thriving member of the workforce when these films debuted. For others, your parents hadn’t even met yet. Or maybe they met… at one of these movies? Wow, that would bring this all full circle.

Anyhow, the good news is that right now, there are several classic movies waiting for you to stream on Hulu. Here are 10 recommendations.

Beaches (1988)

Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey have a philosophical argument about post-Labor Day fashion in 'Beaches'Credit: Everett Collection

This is more than just a delivery method for the ubiquitous ballad “Wind Beneath My Wings.” This much-beloved story follows Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as C.C. and Hillary, two women who couldn’t be more different but have been BFFs since childhood. Well, minus the times when they aren’t speaking to one another — but that volatility is what makes the whole thing work.

C.C. is a showgirl, Hillary is a human rights lawyer, and they both have ups and downs with romantic partners and careers. Please keep a box of tissues handy for the ending, as Garry Marshall plunges into hardcore weep mode during the final segments. “Flyyyyyy… flyyyyyyyyyyy awayyyyyyyyy!”

Dead Poets Society (1989)

Robin Williams sizes up a desk that he wants to pounce on (like a cat) in 'Dead Poets Society'Credit: Everett Collection

“O Captain! My Captain!” Somehow, in 1989, a movie about privileged rich kids at a private school made sense as a celebration of nonconformity.

Starring Robin Williams at his most sincere and directed by the great Australian auteur Peter Weir, this modestly budgeted tale exploded into a major box-office hit, and introduced wide audiences to Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, and Josh Charles.

Did it kickstart a youth craze for poetry recitations? Well, let’s not go that far, but it did get a lot of kids to stand up on their desks in search of a different point of view.

The Insider (1999)

CBS News gets journalistically compromised in the midst of a corporate merger. No commentCredit: Everett Collection

If, when you do something for the first time, it makes you heave and cough, it is clearly bad for you. That said, the tobacco industry did all it could for a very long time to convince consumers to ignore common sense. Michael Mann’s slick journalism thriller The Insider is a fascinating look at the individuals who worked to prove just how insidious the economics of poison can be.

Russell Crowe is phenomenal as troubled whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand, Al Pacino is at his short-fused best as television producer Lowell Bergman, and Christopher Plummer rattles the room with gravitas as the face of righteousness, 60 Minutes anchor Mike Wallace.

La Bamba (1987)

First 'The Buddy Holly Story,' then 'La Bamba.' How about some justice for the Big Bopper?Credit: Columbia Pictures/Everett

Released nearly a decade after The Buddy Holly Story, La Bamba sheds light on one of the other stars who perished on “The Day the Music Died,” Ritchie Valens.

Mexican-American pop icons were few back in the 1950s, but Valens’ rise to success on the backs of the crooner hit “Donna,” dance number “Come On, Let’s Go,” and, most importantly, an arrangement of the Mexican folk song “La Bamba,” makes for a thrilling and heartfelt musical biopic.

The movie launched Lou Diamond Philips’ career, while Los Lobos’ recording of the title song became a surprise sensation, helping sustain the already terrific group on their decades-long career.

Murphy’s Romance (1985)

James Garner likes Sally Field, he really likes her in 'Murphy's Romance'Credit: Everett

This romantic comedy starring Sally Field and James Garner was quietly revolutionary for its time, a rare Hollywood production that showed characters “of a certain age” that were still capable of being romantic and sexy. Set on an Arizona horse farm, the film stars Field as a struggling divorced mother and Garner as the local pharmacist, a widower.

There aren’t many explosions or chase sequences, just lived-in characters, terrific dialogue, and damn fine acting, which made this one of the more beloved unexpected hits of the era. Also keep your eyes open for Carole King in a small role (she’s also on the soundtrack).

Predator (1987)

Still no match for Arnold SchwarzeneggerCredit: 20th Century Fox/courtesy Everett

Thought experiment: Imagine knowing nothing about this movie, missing the opening minute or two of the landing spaceship, and watching this thinking it’s just about a group of mercenaries in Central America … until they start disappearing thanks to a ferocious alien beast! You would have so many questions. (Some will never be answered, like why Arnold Schwarzenegger is called “Dutch” and not “Austrian.”)

The special effects in this film are only matched by the muscles from Arnold, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, and more. After watching this you will never order someone into a helicopter the same way again.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Julia Roberts in an outfit that is only allowed at polo matches or the Kentucky DerbyCredit: Ron Batzdorff/Touchstone

This $14 million movie made nearly half a billion in early ’90s dollars, proving that no one can truly predict what makes a hit.

Richard Gere is at his most charming as a wealthy but emotionally detached businessman who hires the services of a “woman of the night” and ends up falling in love. She is played, of course, by Julia Roberts, who rode this film directly into America’s heart, becoming a household name as the adorable damsel who needs rescuing from her life of disreputable work.

It would be interesting to watch this with a politically active 22-year-old to get their take. For many, though, it’s pure nostalgia.

Raising Arizona (1987)

This cop and this crook would make mighty fine parents. They'll even steal a baby to prove itCredit: Everett Collection

Everything about this zany comedy is perfect, from Nic Cage’s hair to Holly Hunter’s accent, from the yodeling to the opening credits not showing up until the 11-minute mark, and the camera flying around like crazy during a heist-chase involving… diapers?

Raising Arizona proved the Coen brothers’ first independently produced film, Blood Simple (1984), was no fluke. These were filmmakers with a singular perspective who packed every frame with energy and wit. Howling John Goodman emerging from the mud after a jailbreak remains one of the finest moments in cinema.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

*whispering to date while watching 'Saving Private Ryan' when Private Ryan appears on screen*: 'That's Private Ryan'Credit: Everett

Some cinephiles may disagree, but there are movies that may be best watched at home, and Saving Private Ryan is potentially one of them, particularly if you have any anxiety issues. The opening Normandy Beach landing sequence is rightly celebrated, but it’s also… a little intense!

Nearly three decades later, though, that scene and the other battles still pack a punch, as do the in-between stretches where people are not blowing one another up. Credit is due to the remarkable performances by Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Ed Burns, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel (yes, that’s right, Vin Diesel), Tom Sizemore, Jeremy Davies, Adam Goldberg, and more.

There’s Something About Mary (1998)

Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller (sort of) in 'There's Something About Mary'Credit: Everett Collection

Never say a comedy can’t be instructive. I don’t know a single male who doesn’t take zippering their fly a lot more seriously after watching this film. Anyhow, this Ben Stiller-led tale of obsession, featuring Cameron Diaz, Matt Dillon, Chris Elliot, and, uh, Jonathan Richman, became an instant shock classic. While it certainly remains funny and heartfelt it, um, uh, might be a candidate for the “you can’t make this today” list.

Oddly enough, one half of its filmmaking duo, Peter Farrelly, later made the Oscar-winning Green Book (2018), proving that nothing is as unpredictable as a Hollywood career.

- Shoshana Bean recalled taking over a day early for Idina Menzel on Broadway in her role as Elphaba after Menzel broke her ribs falling through an escape door onstage.

- Bean said she felt "horrible" and was worried the audience was "going to hate" her for taking over early.

- Menzel returned to the Gershwin Theatre stage to take her official final bow the day after her painful injury.

The adage "the show must go on" rang true for Shoshana Bean days before she formally stepped in for Idina Menzel in *Wicked*.

During a Tuesday appearance on the *Dinner's on Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson* podcast, Bean, who is starring on Broadway in *The Lost Boys*, spoke about taking over for Menzel as the originator of Elphaba on Broadway. Bean was days away from taking over the role in an official capacity in January 2005 when tragedy struck.

"We were upstairs, me and Megan [Hilty] because Megan was a standby with me at the time. We're with the stage manager and we're just stepping through reviewing things because I'm going to take over on Tuesday. And again, I'd been on a million times," she said. She was then told she might be going onstage sooner than expected.

Menzel had injured herself, falling through an escape door onstage and breaking her ribs. There was a period of uncertainty about if *Wicked *was going on at all that afternoon for the Saturday matinee. "They didn't want to move her. They had to wait for the ambulance to come. And all the while they're just holding the show. I think they held for like 45 minutes. I could be wrong," Bean said.**

"And so we held and we held and nowhere in my mind am I like, 'I got to go get ready and go on,'" she continued. "And sure enough at one point they're like, 'We're finishing the show. Go.' And they got me ready in 7 minutes." Bean said the makeup team had to "slap the paint on" and went on in time to sing "For Good" and bow with the cast at the show's conclusion, which she called "ludicrous."

Bean said the audience "had no idea what happened" and didn't know about Menzel's injury, but it was announced to the crowd that she was stepping in for the remainder of the matinee show that afternoon.**

She was convinced Menzel would be back for the evening's show, since she only had a few shows left in her run as Elphaba and people had flown in from all over to see her. Bean was told, "Kiddo, you might as well consider tonight like your takeover."

Bean said she felt "horrible" and was worried the audience was "going to hate" her, but "it was the complete opposite." Menzel came back for her final bow at the end of what was supposed to be her last show the following evening.

"It was the best possible thing they could do because you can't let this woman not take her final bow after — I don't know why I'm getting emotional about it — but, like, putting everything you put into something to originate it and take that ride. You live for that last weekend for like a release and to let people just like give you your flowers," she said.

Menzel spoke about the injury and her conclusion as Elphaba before passing the torch to Bean. "At the same point in the show when I fell through the stage, two minutes before the end, she left the stage and allowed me to come and finish the show, which I could barely do," she told *ELLE* in March 2025.

"That was the end of my Broadway* Wicked* run, and I got to take some flowers and have a nice send-off. I’ll never forget that Shoshana did that for me, because not everyone would," she added. "I love her to this day for that."**

Nick Reiner appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday for the first time since being arraigned on murder charges in the stabbing deaths of his parents, Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. He pleaded not guilty in February and is being held without bail.

During the brief appearance, Reiner, 32, agreed to waive a deadline for a preliminary hearing, during which a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to proceed to trial. His next court appearance will be held on Sept. 15, when a date for that hearing will be set.

The proceeding was not televised. According to reporters in the courtroom, Nick Reiner wore a yellow prison smock and blue pants. Prosecutors said in court that they were still awaiting autopsy results.

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead inside their home in Brentwood on Dec. 14.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said the preliminary cause of their deaths was "multiple sharp force injuries."

Nick Reiner was arrested hours later and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

The charges — which include special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and use of a dangerous weapon, a knife — carry a maximum sentence of life in prison or the death penalty with no possibility of parole. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said no decision has been made on whether to seek the death penalty.

His initial arraignment was delayed for weeks after his former lawyer, the high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson, abruptly quit the case, citing unspecified reasons beyond his and his client’s control. He is now being represented by public defender Kimberly Greene.

Rob Reiner was the director of several classic Hollywood movies, including This Is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me and Misery.

As an actor, Reiner was best known for playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the iconic sitcom All in the Family, alongside Archie Bunker.

Singer Reiner was a photographer and producer. The couple met on the set of When Harry Met Sally and married in 1989. They shared three children together: Jake, Nick and Romy. Rob Reiner also had an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.

In an online essay published last week, Jake Reiner described the killings of his parents as a "living nightmare."

"Nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it," Jake Reiner wrote. “It’s almost too impossible to process."

Nick Reiner had spoken publicly about his struggles with mental illness and addiction. In 2015, Nick and Rob Reiner collaborated on a semi-autobiographical movie, Being Charlie, about Nick’s troubled life and the strain it put on their relationship.

Amy Grant opened up about leaning on husband Vince Gill for support after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Grant, 65, candidly spoke about healing from her 2022 brain injury during a Thursday, April 30, episode of the “Wild Card With Rachel Martin” podcast. “I just remember in the fall of 2022, when my world was very quiet, I remember saying to Vince, ‘What if this is all I get back? What if this is it?’” she recalled.

“Because to me, it’s like the world is in a conversation and I am down the hall and in a back bedroom,” she continued. “My response time, I love people making me laugh, I love delivering a great one-liner, but that doesn't happen when you're three steps behind the room.”

Grant, who suffered her injury after falling off a bicycle, recalled Gill, 69, telling her, “Amy, life happens to everyone one of us every day. A virtuoso musician could have a stroke and never be able to pick up their instrument again. All you do is live the life that you get. You just take the hand you're dealt that day and live the life that you get.”

The singer then started writing songs again and performing on tour, but had mixed feelings about it. She shared that she looks into the audience and sees fans with signs of aging and wondered if she’s “doing all of us a disservice by not writing about what life feels like now.”

“I felt some creative imitations,” she added. “I felt like I was rusty songwriting in a way. I would either finish a lyric or get started on it. I was a little freer reaching out to people I had never worked with, saying, ‘Hey, I’ve got this lyric, any chance you want to help me with the music?’ Because it was hard for me to wrap my arms around the music part of it.”

In February 2024, Grant opened up about the aftermath of the accident, which left her unconscious for 10 minutes, telling E! News that she still had “issues with [her] short-term memory.”

"My balance is still weird," she noted. "You know, sometimes I walk around like I'm drunk, and you just have to laugh about all of it," she says. "I can't remember what I can't remember." She also shared that she had to “learn how to sin again.”

Short-handed Timberwolves look vulnerable in Game 5 loss to Nuggets

The Minnesota Timberwolves raced out to a 3-1 lead, but it might have cost them everything.

Yes, Game 5 on Monday, April 27, when the Denver Nuggets outpaced Minnesota, 125-113, in the first round of the NBA playoffs, was just one game. But it also served as an indicator of just how much Minnesota is missing without Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo.

Denver outscored Minnesota by a margin of 37-24 in a third quarter avalanche, as the Nuggets are trying to become just the 14th team in NBA history to win a playoff series after trailing 3-1.

All of this prompts one question: can the Timberwolves make a run without Edwards and DiVincenzo? Can they even get out of this round?

The Nuggets are now playing with significantly more confidence and momentum than they did earlier in the series. Denver’s bench had scored just 16 points in the crushing Game 4 loss; on Monday night, the reserves scored 27. Cameron Johnson and Spencer Jones, the pair of key Denver forwards, combined to drop 38 points in Game 5 just two nights after they scored just 9.

The Nuggets harassed Minnesota’s ball-handlers, forcing them into 25 turnovers Monday night, which was three more than Minnesota’s combined total in Games 3 and 4.

But, more than anything, the Timberwolves played tight and pressed, seemingly hyper-aware of the players they were missing.

1 / 0Coolest kicks of the NBA playoffs as stars show their sneaker style

The NBA playoffs bring out more than high‑stakes basketball, as stars showcase their sneaker style on the league’s biggest stage.See the coolest kicks worn during the 2026 NBA Playoffs, where footwear becomes part of the spotlight.Above, The shoes of Jalen Brunson #11 of the New York Knicks are seen during the first half of Game One of the Eastern Conference First Round NBA Playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden on April 18, 2026, in New York City.

“I thought we started the game wanting to make all of the home run plays, instead of wanting to make the plays that help us get into the ball game and make the rhythm plays,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

This is where Edwards’ absence hurts the Timberwolves. He’s a stabilizing presence and one of the dynamic scoring threats in the NBA. He averaged 28.8 points per game during the regular season, which ranked third in the league. He can handle the ball, his shooting range helps space the floor and he’s the preferred option in the clutch.

And while backup guard Ayo Dosunmu emerged as a breakout player in Game 4 with his historic 43-point masterpiece, it’s clear the Timberwolves won’t be able to count on that kind of production every night from here on out.

Dosunmu scored 18 points in a solid performance, and the Timberwolves did shrink a 27-point deficit to 10 midway through the fourth, but that run came when Denver eased its pressure and intensity.

So, what’s the path forward for Minnesota?

For one, the Timberwolves should hope that Edwards heals quickly. Because even if they get past the Nuggets, their likely opponent in the second round would be the No. 2 San Antonio Spurs, who are a legitimate threat to win the West. But, practically speaking, the Timberwolves will essentially need to play pristine defense like it did during its three-game winning streak in the series, especially in the paint.

In Games 2, 3 and 4, the Timberwolves limited Denver to an average of just 38.7 points in the paint per game. In Game 5, that figure ballooned to 62.

Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert was masterful against Nikola Jokić. Forward Jaden McDaniels irritated Jamal Murray and Denver’s other ball-handlers. More of that will be required.

Because without Edwards, the short-handed Timberwolves are not only suddenly vulnerable, they might be marching toward a historic exit.
