A federal appeals court has denied a request from dozens of families who lost relatives in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes to reopen a criminal case against the aircraft manufacturer.

Lawyers for the families had argued that the Department of Justice failed to properly consult them before reaching a deal last year with Boeing that led a lower court to dismiss a criminal conspiracy charge against the company. The charge stemmed from allegations that Boeing misled federal regulators about a flight-control system linked to the crashes, which killed 346 people.

In a unanimous decision released Tuesday, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said it disagreed with the families' claims that federal prosecutors had violated their rights under the Crime Victims' Rights Act and therefore could not revive the case.

Paul Cassell, a lawyer for the families, called the ruling "badly flawed."

"Today's ruling means that Boeing escapes criminal justice accountability for killing 346 people," Cassell said Tuesday in a statement. "The victims' families were never given a meaningful opportunity to shape the negotiations between the Justice Department and Boeing, dating back to 2020."

Emailed messages were sent to Boeing seeking comment. At a hearing last month in New Orleans before the appellate court, Boeing attorney Paul Clement said more than 60 other families "affirmatively supported" the deal and dozens more did not oppose it.

"Boeing deeply regrets" the tragic crashes, Clement had said, and "has taken extraordinary steps to improve its internal processes and has paid substantial compensation" to the victims' families.

The deal allowed Boeing to avoid prosecution in exchange for paying or investing an additional $1.1 billion in fines, compensation to victims' families, and internal safety and quality measures.

At the same hearing, federal prosecutors told the judges that the government has, for years, "solicited and weighed the views of the crash victims' families as it's decided whether and how to prosecute the Boeing Company."

All passengers and crew died when the 737 Max jets crashed less than five months apart in 2018 and 2019 — a Lion Air flight that plunged into the sea off the coast of Indonesia and an Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed into a field shortly after takeoff.

The criminal case had taken many twists and turns. The Justice Department first charged Boeing in 2021 with defrauding the government but agreed not to prosecute if the company paid a settlement and took steps to comply with anti-fraud laws.

Federal prosecutors later determined in 2024 that Boeing had violated that agreement, and the company agreed to plead guilty to the charge. But U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor in Texas, who oversaw the case for years, rejected the plea deal and directed the two sides to resume negotiations.

The Justice Department returned last May with the new deal and a request to withdraw the criminal charge altogether, which O'Connor approved in November. The Justice Department argued that going to trial carried the risk that a jury might acquit Boeing entirely, leaving the company without further punishment.

In dismissing the case, O'Connor said federal prosecutors hadn't acted in bad faith and had explained their decision and met their obligations under the Crime Victims' Rights Act.

O'Connor also said that case law prevented him from blocking the dismissal simply because he disagreed with the government's view that the new deal with Boeing served the public interest.

The case centered around a software system that Boeing developed for the 737 Max, which airlines began flying in 2017. Boeing billed it as an update to its 737 family that wouldn't require much additional pilot training.

But the Max did include significant changes, some of which Boeing downplayed — most notably, the addition of an automated flight-control system designed to help account for the plane's larger engines. Boeing didn't mention the system in airplane manuals, and most pilots didn't know about it.

In both of the deadly crashes, that software pitched the nose of the plane down repeatedly based on faulty readings from a single sensor, and pilots flying for Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines were unable to regain control. After the Ethiopia crash, the planes were grounded worldwide for 20 months.

Investigators found that Boeing did not inform key Federal Aviation Administration personnel about changes it had made to the software before regulators set pilot training requirements for the Max and certified the airliner for flight.

"One can only hope that another Boeing crash won't be the outcome of this badly flawed ruling," Cassell, the lawyer for the families, said Tuesday.

Milly Alcock knows a thing or two about obsessive fandoms.

The 25-year-old actress, who will star in *Supergirl* this June, has concerns over playing the famed cousin of Superman, Alcock admitted in a new interview with *Vanity Fair** *published Tuesday. She noted, however, that her previous experience on *Game of Thrones** *prequel *House of the Dragon* prepared her for any potential backlash she may receive.

"Of course I'm scared," Alcock shared. "Of course I want people to like me and the movie. But ultimately, it's out of my control."

Alcock acknowledged that playing a young Rhaenyra Targaryen prepped her for portraying Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, touching on the fact that both characters come from revered franchises with dedicated, and sometimes also critical, fandoms.

"It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on. We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women's bodies," Alcock said.

"I can't really stop them. I can only be myself," she added when it comes to how fans will receive her in the feature directed by Craig Gillespie.

While contending with her growing role in the DC Universe, Alcock said she has not reached out to former onscreen Supergirls for insight, such as Melissa Benoist and Sasha Calle.

"They're just people living their lives," Alcock said. "It's not like we have this blood bond."

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Skyrocketing oil and gas prices in Europe as a result of the ongoing Iran war won't return to normal levels any time soon, even if peace is declared tomorrow, the European Union's energy commissioner warned Tuesday.

Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said although there are no immediate oil and gas supply shortages in the 27-member bloc, there's pressure on diesel and jet fuel supply as well as "increasing constraints" in global gas markets that are resulting in higher electricity prices.

"What I find extremely important is to state as clearly as I can, that even if that peace is here tomorrow, still we will not go back to normal in a foreseeable future," Jørgensen told a news conference after a meeting of EU energy ministers.

He said the EU's executive arm is preparing a string of measures designed to help families and businesses weather the huge spike in oil prices that have resulted in about a 70% price hike for gas and 60% for oil in Europe. Since the start of the war, the EU's bill for imported fossil fuels has jumped by 14 billion euros, according to Jørgensen.

Closely coordinated action between all EU members is necessary to "avoid fragmented national responses and disruptive signals to the markets," he said.

The "toolbox" of measures now in the works will be unveiled "quite soon" and will include ways to make it easier for states to decouple gas prices from electricity prices, the commissioner said. He added that a tax cut on electricity, as suggested by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also being weighed.

Jørgensen said although he doesn't foresee a repeat of the 2022 natural gas crisis where companies reaped huge profits from a massive gas price hike, a one-time "windfall tax" on such companies "is a possibility."

There are now "good opportunities" for member states to financially support vulnerable groups or industries now under "extraordinary stress" and that the Commission would make "these possibilities even simpler and wider," said Jørgensen.

Jørgensen also encouraged EU members to consider the International Energy Agency's 10-point plan which includes work from home, reduced highway speeds, encouraging public transport and increasing car sharing.

He said the EU stands by its ban on Russian gas purchases, which is meant to reduce dependence on Russian gas and choke off funding for Russia's war in Ukraine. Reliance on Russian gas dropped from 45% before the war to 10% now and will be reduced to zero once imports from other suppliers ramp up, especially from the U.S. The EU is looking at new energy sources from Azerbaijan, Algeria and Canada as well as smaller producers around the world.

The commissioner warned the EU should never "repeat the mistakes of the past allowing Putin to weaponize energy against us and blackmail member states." He added that "it would be totally unacceptable" for the EU to continue buying energy that would "indirectly help finance the terrible war that Putin is conducting in Ukraine."

As federal investigators built a case against Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell, they discovered emails they believed suggested that she was arranging young women to have sex with then-Prince Andrew, according to a new review of documents released earlier this year by the Department of Justice.

A search warrant application signed just days before Maxwell's 2020 arrest identified at least three instances when Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Maxwell appeared to discuss arrangements for young women, including ahead of his official state visit to Peru in 2002.

"As for girls well I leave that entirely to you," said an email believed to have been sent by Mountbatten-Windsor to Maxwell in Feb. 2002, signed "Masses of love A"

House Oversight panel seeks testimony from private investigators who removed evidence from Epstein's home

In another email identified by the FBI, Mountbatten-Windsor asked Maxwell about helping him find "some new inappropriate friends," according to the search warrant affidavit.

"I am up here at Balmoral Summer Camp for the Royal Family," Mountbatten-Windsor wrote in August 2001. "Have you found me some new inappropriate friends?"

Months later ahead of his official visit to Peru, Maxwell shared with Mountbatten-Windsor an email in which she asked an acquaintance in Peru to help find him people who are "intelligent pretty fun" and can be "to be friendly and discreet."

"Some sight seeing some 2 legged sight seeing (read intelligent pretty fun and from good families) and he will be very happy. I know I can rely on you to show him a wonderful time and that you will only introduce him to friends that you can trust and rely on to be friendly and discreet and fun," Maxwell wrote in March 2002.

"Got it I will ring him today if I can. Love you A," an email associated with Mountbatten-Windsor responded.

According to a search application released earlier this year by the Department of Justice, the FBI believed those emails showed Andrew and Maxwell "discussing her attempts to arrange for young females to engage in sex acts" with him. The messages were cited as part of an application to get a judge's permission to search dozens of electronic devices seized from Epstein's residences.

Neither the palace nor a representative for the former Prince Andrew responded to a request for comment from ABC News.

Mountbatten-Windsor has long denied any wrongdoing, and Maxwell -- who was convicted on sex trafficking charges in 2021 -- was never charged with arranging women for Mountbatten-Windsor. As part of that prosecution, investigators unsuccessfully sought to interview Mountbatten-Windsor in 2020.

"To date, Prince Andrew has provided zero cooperation," former U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in January 2020.

The disclosure of the new documents come as police in the United Kingdom are renewing their scrutiny of Mountbatten-Windsor. In an interview with ABC News earlier this month, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said his office was seeking unredacted materials related to Epstein from the Department of Justice.

"There's a whole range of suggested sexual allegations and those are being assessed at the moment to see whether any of them do actually merit a criminal investigation," Rowley said.

ABC News' Zoe Magee contributed to this report.

A massive brawl broke out between players on each side approximately eight minutes into the first period

The ice got heated.

The NYPD reunited with the FDNY for the 52nd annual "Heroes Hockey" charity game on Sunday, March 29, an already intense matchup between the rivals that escalated significantly when sticks dropped and fists flew in the first period.

With the score tied 1-1 approximately eight minutes into the game, several players on the opposing teams began pouncing on each another at UBS Arena in New York, as seen in a clip shared by the arena on social media.

In the video, the red-and-white-clad FDNY and the green-jerseyed NYPD threw relentless punches at each other, while several referees attempted to break up the melee.

The refs eventually got the situation under control, resulting in a packed penalty box.

Ultimately, the NYPD were victorious with a 3-2 win over the FDNY. The victory marked the first time in 10 years that the police defeated the firefighters in the annual charity game.

The players picked their brawl back up after the game wrapped. Several NYPD and FDNY players threw punches and shoves once more, taking several minutes for the fight to break up.

While on-ice brawls are nothing new in professional ice hockey, flying fisticuffs have a history in the police and fireman face off from years past. They also go down in their other charity sport match-ups.

One decade ago when the NYPD took on the FDNY in football, the Brooklyn-based charity game — ironically called the "Fun City Bowl" — resulted in a bloody brawl between members of each side, reported ABC News in 2016.

Fists flew on the 50-yard line as tempers heated up during the traditional post-game handshake, with some athletes exiting the field bloodied and bruised. The NYPD won 29-13 that year.

The NYPD said at the time that the melee just shows that football is "a competitive sport whether it's the NFL Super Bowl or the annual NYPD-FDNY challenge," per the outlet.

Ah yes, the signs of spring. Flowers blooming, temperatures rising and baseball players signing contract extensions.

During the 2025 calendar year, there were 14 extensions of at least five years signed by players under 30 years old. Those feel like appropriate enough parameters to define the typical "young player signs extension" headline. Of those 14, 10 were agreed upon within a month of Opening Day. That's no coincidence. Things have been slightly slower this season, but we've seen recent agreements involving JesúsLuzardo, Nico Hoerner, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Shane Baz, Cristopher Sánchez, Cooper Prattand Colt Emerson.

"It's a little bit of tradition," Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias said Saturday during Baz's extension news conference, when asked why March and April tend to bring so many contracts. "Spring training is, maybe, the peak time to have those discussions. Front offices tend to be really, really busy from November all the way into February. And [spring training] is a period of time where you can sort of take a breath, look at your team and maybe lean into these conversations a little bit more."

The calendar is about to flip to April, but extension season is far from over. Opening Day is most certainly not a deadline. History tells us that a handful of additional players are likely to reach deals at some point in the next month. So let's dig through the pile of young talent, sorting them into extension-candidate tiers, to see which names could be next.

Pending free agents

Tarik Skubal (DET), Freddy Peralta (NYM), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (NYY), Trevor Rogers (BAL), Trent Grisham (NYY), Daulton Varsho (TOR), Kris Bubic (KC)

As the most accomplished player on this list, Skubal is also the likeliest to hit free agency. An extension for the two-time reigning Cy Young would probably have to start in the $400 million range. Grisham and Chisholm are also almost certain to test the market; the Yankees haven't done an extension since the disastrous Aaron Hicks deal signed in February 2019. Varsho is a Scott Boras client, which makes an extension improbable (more on that in a moment).

Rogers and Bubic both play for clubs that have shown a willingness to extend pitchers. Baltimore just secured Baz for the next five years, while Kansas City inked a 3-year deal with young southpaw Cole Ragans last spring. Peralta, dealt to New York from Milwaukee over the winter, faced extension questions immediately upon his arrival in Queens. The righty has a history with Mets POBO David Stearns and assistant general manager Eduardo Brizuela from their time with the Brewers, but there's definitely a chance Peralta wants to test the free-agent market.

Scott Boras clients

Jeremy Peña (HOU, free agent in 2028), MacKenzie Gore (TEX, 2028), Gunnar Henderson (BAL, 2029), Shea Langeliers (ATH, 2029), Elly De La Cruz (CIN, 2030), James Wood (WSH, 2031), Royce Lewis (MIN, 2029)

Boras, the game's most notorious and influential agent, rarely, if ever, advises his players to sign extensions. There have been a handful of exceptions — Stephen Strasburg in 2016, Jose Altuve in 2018, Xander Bogaerts in 2019 — but for the most part, Boras Corp clients reach free agency.

That's bad news for fans of those players' teams, particularly those in smaller markets. It's difficult to envision Henderson leaving money on the table to stay in Baltimore; the same is true for De La Cruz in Cincinnati. The Athletics have been über-aggressive recently with extensions, which could put a Langeliers deal on the table. And keep an eye on Wood, who grew up in the D.C. area and might want to stay close to home.

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

How good is this player?

Adley Rutschman (BAL, 2028), CJ Abrams (WSH, 2029), Vinnie Pasquantino (KC, 2029), Jarren Duran (BOS, 2029), Oneil Cruz (PIT, 2029), Masyn Winn (STL, 2030)

It's hard to extend a mystery box.

All of these players have flashed superstar potential, yes, but not one has finished in the top five of MVP voting, and only two — Rutschman in 2023 and Duran in 2024 — have finished in the top 10. This dynamic presents something of a double-edged sword. By extending such a player, the team involved could be buying low, getting in on the ground floor, or it could be locking itself into an albatross contract. These guys come with high risk and high reward.

It's a thunderstorm of "ifs." If Rutschman and Duran recapture their All-Star form and find more consistency. If Cruz finally capitalizes on his immense physical tools. If Winn takes a step forward offensively. If Abrams takes a step forward defensively. If Pasquantino ups his walk rate and pulls the ball in the air more. If, if, if.

Pitchers

Logan Gilbert (SEA, 2028), George Kirby (SEA, 2029), Hunter Brown (HOU, 2029), Paul Skenes (PIT, 2030), Bryan Woo (SEA, 2030), Edward Cabrera (CHC, 2029), Eury Pérez (MIA, 2030)

Pitchers present an equation all their own, as the injury risk associated with the position makes hurlers more volatile than hitters year over year. That means a disproportionate number of extensions involve hitters. Still, hurlers get long-term deals from time to time, including recent signees Sanchez, Luzardo and Baz.

Of the Seattle trio, Gilbert is probably the likeliest extension candidate, given his free agency timeline and track record of durability. The Cubs have done two extensions over the past week; is Cabrera next? Pérez probably has to deliver a stretch of health for Miami to feel comfortable committing significant money to him.

Skenes, as always, is his own conversation. It's hard to see the Pirates coughing up the fortune it would require to keep the 23-year-old star in Pittsburgh for the long run. So far, Skenes has said all the right things about how he's committed to the Steel City and how he wants to win there. But the cold, hard math says his days in Pittsburgh are relatively numbered.

Will they pay what it's gonna take?

Riley Greene (DET, 2029), Zach Neto (LAA, 2030), Brice Turang (MIL, 2030), Junior Caminero (TB, 2031), Nick Kurtz (ATH, 2031), Wyatt Langford (TEX, 2030)

These are all sensational young players. Greene and Caminero were All-Stars last season. Turang and Kurtz got MVP votes. Neto and Langford both produced more than 5.0 bWAR. If not for their penny-pinched employers, this crew would all be great extension contenders.

The Tigers have done just one extension under POBO Scott Harris, a six-year, $31 million deal that bought out Colt Keith's arbitration years. Anaheim hasn't done one since 2021, when the Angels gave David Fletcher a five-year extension that turned out disastrously. Turang and Kurtz both play for extension-friendly franchises, but both might have already played themselves out of their employers' price ranges. The Rangers have been operating frugally ever since they won it all in 2023, though Langford is a perfect candidate. So, too, is Caminero, whose agent has overseen landmark extensions for José Ramírez and Geraldo Perdomo.

Guys who just got here

Chase DeLauter (CLE), Kevin McGonigle (DET), JJ Wetherholt (STL), Marcelo Mayer (BOS), Drake Baldwin (ATL), Colson Montgomery (CWS), Luke Keaschall (MIN), Carson Benge (NYM)

These players either debuted in the past week or at some point last year. They won't hit free agency until after the 2031 season. Time is on their side. Still, we always hear extension buzz around hot-shot rookies. And over the years, many of those rumors have turned into real dollars.

Baldwin, whose employers in Atlanta are perhaps the most extension-eager organization in baseball, has to be at the top of this list. Expect the chatter around Wetherholt and McGonigle to pick up as they continue to establish themselves as stars. Mayer has seen two Red Sox compatriots, Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell, get extensions over the past 365 days or so and could be next. Montgomery and Keaschall are both good options for their bad teams to build around, if they're willing to spend the money. DeLauter's lengthy injury history likely makes an extension complicated, though he has made a lot of noise in his short time in the majors.

Not even here yet

Konnor Griffin (PIT), Jesus Made (MIL), Leo De Vries (ATH)

Pre-debut extensions are rare, but they do happen from time to time, as Colt Emerson, Seattle's shortstop of the future, reminded everyone this week. There were whispers about negotiations between Griffin and the Pirates during spring training, but nothing came to fruition. Made and De Vries are further behind on their debut timelines but could find themselves in the show this autumn with a strong summer.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel knows he's walking "a fine line" when it comes to a recent tweet by running back TreVeyon Henderson. On Monday, Henderson raised some eyebrows when he appeared to show support toward ex-Chicago Bulls guard Jaden Ivey, who was waived Monday following anti-LGBTQ comments.

Ivey criticized the NBA for embracing Pride Month, which he claimed was the league celebrating "unrighteousness." Hours later, the Bulls released Ivey for "conduct detrimental to the team."

Upon hearing that news, Henderson responded with a Bible verse that read, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Vrabel was asked about Henderson's tweet Tuesday. The coach said he wants players to be able to express themselves, and also make sure they are educated.

Vrabel's full comment read:

"I think there is a fine line. I want to tell you, I love TreVeyon. I love the person. He cares deeply about our team. He cares deeply about his faith. He cares deeply about his family, his wife, the people in our building. And so I want them to be able to express what they believe in their heart and in their mind, but also want to make sure that they're educated. And we want to be inclusive. Everything we want to do [is] to provide an environment for people to want to feel comfortable, but also to share their personal beliefs. And then also, we represent the team. And we represent the organization."

Vrabel was then asked whether he would talk to Henderson or the team about the situation. The Patriots head coach said he's attempted to have those conversations with players, and tried to get across that "their actions represent something more than just themselves."

Based on Vrabel's comments, it doesn't sound as though Henderson will face punishment from the team.

The running back turned in a strong rookie season after being selected with the No. 38 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Henderson rushed for 911 yards and scored nine touchdowns despite starting just four games as a rookie. He's expected to take on an even bigger role for the Patriots next season.
