Skarsgård's sexy outfit on SNL was just his latest sultry look in recent months, as he promotes his new film Pillion, in theaters Feb. 6

Alexander Skarsgård brought sexy to Saturday Night Live!

As the actor, 49, made his hosting debut on the late-night comedy sketch series' Jan. 31 episode, he kept his sexy style streak going, wearing a blue SNL-embroidered bathrobe each time he introduced Cardi B as the evening's musical guest.

Announcing Cardi's first performance of "Bodega Baddie," Skarsgård wore the cozy attire, and he did the same when he introduced the rapper, 33, once more, moments before she performed "ErrTime."

For the latter intro, Skarsgård paired his blue bathrobe with a notable accessory: a small, glittery tiara that sparkled under the lights of SNL's Studio 8H.

The father of one made his SNL hosting debut on Jan. 31 — which marked the series' 1,000th episode. His own dad, Stellan Skarsgård, appeared for a surprise cameo, starring alongside his son in two sketches. (Some other famous members of the Skarsgård's acting family include Bill Skarsgård, Gustaf Skarsgård and Valter Skarsgård.)

Skarsgård — whose most recent film project is the Charli xcx-starring The Moment — previously amped up his fashion choices throughout 2025 as well, as he promoted Pillion, in which he stars as a member of a local biker gang who starts a BDSM relationship with a younger, closeted gay man (played by Harry Melling).

One notable style moment took place when Skarsgård wore an edgy outfit during the BFI London Film Festival, pairing a backless white halterneck shirt with leather trousers. Another came when the actor sported a shirt featuring dildos, paper towels, lubricants and a cracked cellphone at the 21st Zurich Film Festival.

The Harry Lighton-directed film includes several scenes that do not shy away from the realities of sex, Skarsgård told Variety. "I often find sex on screen quite boring," he said. "Usually, all the tension is leading up to that moment, and then once people are in the sack."

Skarsgård further explained that he and Lighton, 33, "wanted it to be clumsy and weird. On screen, it often looks like a ballet, but sex can be awkward and funny."

Saturday Night Live will return on Feb. 28 with Heated Rivalry's Connor Storrie as host and Mumford & Sons as the musical guest. Pillion will be released in the U.S. by A24 on Feb. 6.

**Warning: This article contains spoilers for the *Bridgerton* season 4 premiere, "The Waltz."**

Call it life imitating art: Yerin Ha reveals she had her very own fairytale moment while filming the *Cinderella*-esque fourth season of *Bridgerton*.

The actress and her costar Luke Thompson tell * *that she genuinely lost a shoe while they were filming the scene in which her character, Sophie Baek, flees the Bridgertons' masquerade ball in the season 4 premiere. **

"She lost her shoe! In a *Cinderella* way!" Thompson exclaims. To which Ha gleefully adds, "I did!"

Sophie attends the Bridgertons' lavish bash in secret, donning a glittering silver gown and a matching face mask that conceals her true identity as a housemaid from the rest of the ton. **

A chance encounter with bohemian perma-bachelor Benedict Bridgerton (Thompson) leads to the pair spending an enchanting evening together in the pergola, but when the clock strikes midnight, Sophie is forced to flee or risk being unmasked.

'Bridgerton' showrunner teases 'high stakes' and 'juicy conflict' in Benedict and Sophie's season 4 romance

Benedict finally meets his mysterious match in 'Bridgerton' season 4 trailer

Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton and Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek on 'Bridgerton'

As Thompson tells it, he and Ha were in the middle of shooting the sequence where Benedict chases after Sophie, known only to him as the Woman in Silver, when the shoe situation occurred.  **

"Literally, we cry, 'Cut!' And we'd been running from the house to the pergola so we had to reset," he says. "And Yerin, when she was resetting, ran up some steps and left a shoe." **

Ha, however, notes that the moment looked "a little bit different" than in previous *Cinderella* adaptations because it happened before the cameras had started rolling. Plus, she teases, "I would have ruined the shot anyways because I literally went, "*I lost a shoe!*'"

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

While it might not be a shoe, Sophie *does* end up inadvertently giving Benedict a parting gift when she loses one of her gloves in her mad dash for the exit. The clothing item becomes Benedict's first real clue in his quest to identify his mysterious match.

And, honestly, the glove alone is plenty enough material — at least in Thompson's book. "He's already got a glove. He's picking up a shoe?" he jokingly tells Ha. "By the end, he'll have your whole costume!"

The first part of *Bridgerton* season 4 is streaming now on Netflix, with the second installment slated to drop on Feb. 26.**

- *Bridgerton *season 4 puts Benedict Bridgerton front and center as he slips into a *Cinderella* story.

- Yerin Ha and Katie Leung are among the new faces joining the Regency romance.

- Part 1 of season 4 premieres Thursday, Jan. 29.

We've watched three (of the eight) Bridgerton siblings find their happily-ever-afters, and now it's Benedict's turn. Season 4 of Netflix's romantic Regency romance drops Luke Thompson's sensitive Benedict into a Cinderella story when he meets a mysterious woman at a masquerade ball, resulting in an infatuation that transcends class and social standing.

Showrunner Jess Brownell recently told * *that the novel season 4 is based on, *An Offer From a Gentleman*, practically wrote itself for TV. "It lent itself really closely to television structure for a love story," she said. "There are just a lot of rich set pieces that gave us juicy conflict and high stakes. I think fans will be happy to see quite a few of the set pieces from the book in the show."

Several new faces, many of them from outside the aristocracy, join the series' main cast in season 4. Get to know them (and reacquaint yourself with the Bridgertons) with EW's full *Bridgerton *season 4 cast and character guide.

Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton

Luke Thompson is a classically trained actor well-versed in the works of William Shakespeare, having performed in stage productions of *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, *Julius Caesar*, and *King Lear *that later aired on TV.

You may also know him from BBC One's *In the Club* (2014–2016) and films such as *Dunkirk* (2017) and *Misbehaviour* (2020). More recently, he portrayed American diplomat Harry Bingham on Netflix's *Transatlantic *(2023).

Thompson plays Benedict, the second-eldest Bridgerton son. He's spent the last three seasons flirting and dodging anything serious, but season 4 finally gives him his own love story.

Jonathan Bailey says 'Bridgerton' didn't teach him anything about romance

Bridgerton. (L to R) Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton, Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma in episode 208 of Bridgerton

"We've watched three seasons of Benedict having a very good time and being good at everything, but unable to commit to any one thing," Brownell told EW. "And I think, at the top of season 4, that's worn a little thin for him. I think he senses that something is missing in his life — even if he isn't ready to accept it — but once he meets the masked woman in the first episode, everything will change for him."

Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek

Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Yerin Ha has made a name for herself with roles on shows like *Halo *(2022–2024), *Dune: Prophecy* (2024), and *The Survivors* (2025).

Ha stars in *Bridgerton *season 4 as Sophie, a young woman working as a housemaid for the imposing Lady Araminta Gun (Katie Leung). Her life changes when she crosses paths with Benedict during a masquerade ball, sparking a romance straight out of a fairy tale.

*Bridgerton *book lovers will notice one big change: Sophie Beckett. as she's known in the book, is now known as Sophie Baek. Ha worked closely with Brownell on the change, telling Tudum in 2024, "It's a really nice way for me to feel like the role is fit for me, rather than me having to fit a certain mold. It's amazing what it can do just in a psychological sense. So it means a lot that Jess did that for me."

Katie Leung as Lady Araminta Gun

Katie Leung as Lady Araminta Gun in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Katie Leung as Lady Araminta Gun in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Katie Leung began her career playing Cho Chang in the *Harry Potter* film series (2005–2011). Since then, she's appeared in key roles on series such as *Annika* (2021–2023), *Arcane *(2021–2024), and *The Wheel of Time* (2024).

Leung now joins *Bridgerton* as Lady Araminta Gun, Sophie's stepmother and employer, as well as the mother of Rosamund (Michelle Mao) and Posy (Isabella Wei). Brownell told EW that while Araminta and Rosamund have a reputation for being "quite villainous characters" in the book, the show aims to explore what drives their choices.

"On our show, we try not to ever present anyone's character in black or white. We're interested in the gray area. We're interested in why people do the things they do," she explained. "So we've spent some time trying to understand Araminta, where she comes from emotionally, and getting to do that exploration was really interesting for us as writers."

That perspective matters this season, as Araminta's daughters also navigate their love lives. "Seeing the way Araminta guides her girls versus the way Violet guides her girls, or Lady Featherington guided her girls... the compare and contrast is quite illuminating," Brownell added.

Michelle Mao as Rosamund Li

Michelle Mao as Rosamund Li in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Michelle Mao as Rosamund Li in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Michelle Mao has been working steadily for nearly a decade, with various short films giving way to guest spots on shows like *9-1-1 *(2020) and *Goosebumps *(2023) and a supporting role in Kogonada's *A Big Bold Beautiful Journey* (2025).

She's re-teaming with the filmmaker for the upcoming *Zi*, which made its debut at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

Mao plays Rosamund Li, Araminta's eldest daughter. At Sundance, Mao spoke with IMDb about *Bridgerton* season 4, joking about how the series is "not as sexy as you would think it is" behind the scenes.

"I think we're all just silly," she said. "They're all British, and so they have this dry British sense of humor."

Isabella Wei as Posy Li

Isabella Wei as Posy Li and Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Isabella Wei as Posy Li and Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Isabella Wei is a rising star, and Netflix has been a big part of her journey thus far. Fans might recognize her from the streamer's spooky period drama *1899 *(2022) or its hit spy thriller *Black Doves* (2024–present). Elsewhere, she appeared opposite Bill Skarsgård in Rupert Sanders' *The Crow* (2024).

Wei joins *Bridgerton *season 4 as Posy Li, Araminta's youngest daughter who's much kinder than her mother and older sister.

In a chat with Numéro Netherlands, Wei said, "Posy's enthusiasm and openness are what make her unapologetically herself, and I feel so privileged to help craft those moments of joy that come from her."

She continued, "To her family, she stands out like a sore thumb. Her proclivity for imperfection drives her mother and sister away from her, so I think there's a part of her that always feels a little trapped and lesser-than. Despite being constantly put down for being herself, she brings a cheerful sincerity to her otherwise highly restrained environment. She leads with her heart, not her head, which is the biggest difference between her and the stringent rules of society, but also her greatest strength."

Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton

Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'

Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Jonathan Bailey has kept busy since breaking out as Anthony, the eldest son of the Bridgerton clan. While he had plenty of work before the Netflix hit, he's best known as Fiyero in the *Wicked *films (2024–2025).

On the small screen, Bailey starred opposite Matt Bomer on *Fellow Travelers* (2023), for which he was nominated for an Emmy.

Looking ahead, he'll reunite with *Wicked* costar Ariana Grande in a 2027 production of *Sunday in the Park with George *at London's Barbican Centre.

Bailey will return as Anthony in *Bridgerton* season 4. Though he hasn't revealed too many details, the actor said during a November 2025 interview on *Late Night with Seth Meyers *that he'll "always pop back and say hello" as long as *Bridgerton *keeps going.

Simone Ashley as Kate Bridgerton

Simone Ashley as Kate Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'

Liam Daniel/Netflix

After starring on the Netflix teen series *Sex Education *(2019–2021), Simone Ashley pivoted to *Bridgerton*. She plays Kate Bridgerton (née Sharma), who fell in love and eventually married Anthony Bridgerton. Long live Kanthony.

In 2023, Ashley played Ariel's sister, Indira, in the live-action *The Little Mermaid*. She also starred in and executive produced the romcom *Picture This* (2025), and will next share the screen with Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in *The Devil Wears Prada 2*.

Ahead of the season 4 premiere, Brownell confirmed to EW that "Kanthony will be together again." She also teased that fans "will get to be seeing more of their marital bliss and seeing their baby as well."

Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton

Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'

Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Luke Newton starred on Disney Channel's *The Lodge* (2016–2017) before taking the role of Colin Bridgerton, the third Bridgerton son whose friends-to-lovers story with Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) stole hearts in season 3.

In Season 4, Brownell told us, the newlyweds will get to show fans "what their marriage looks like."

Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Bridgerton

Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington on 'Bridgerton'

Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington on 'Bridgerton'.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Nicola Coughlan turned heads as *Derry Girls' *(2018–2022) Clare Delvin before she became everyone's favorite gossip queen, Penelope Featherington.

After starring as Diplomat Barbie in *Barbie *(2023) and leading the British dark comedy series *Big Mood* (2024–present), Coughlan will play major roles in a pair of upcoming family flicks: *Goat* and *The Magic Faraway Tree*.

On *Bridgerton*, Penelope starts off as the somewhat shy and overlooked Featherington daughter. She eventually finds love with her best friend Colin.

Season 3 unmasked Penelope as the mysterious Lady Whistledown. This puts her on the radar of Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) in season 4.

"It's high stakes," Brownell told EW. "On the one hand, the Queen loves to be entertained. But, on the other hand, the Queen does not like to have anything written that she disagrees with, so Penelope is in a tricky position this year trying to please the Queen without giving up her journalistic integrity."

On top of that, Penelope has to write about her new family. "The Bridgertons are gossip fodder," she added, "so she's gonna have to do a bit of it."

Ruth Gemmell as Violet Bridgerton

Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'

Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Ruth Gemmell broke out nearly 30 years ago in the film *Fever Pitch* (1997) with Colin Firth. She went on to become a fixture on the stages and screens of England, with guest spots on series like *Peak Practice* (1997) and *Midsomer Murders* (2005) giving way to major roles on *Utopia* (2013–2014) and *Home Fires* (2015–2016).

Gemmell plays Lady Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the family. She also played the character on the spinoff *Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story* (2023).

In season 3, Violet gets a romance of her own with Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis), Lady Danbury's brother. Brownell told EW that this budding relationship carries over into season 4.

"In season 3, they did a lot of giggling and light flirting and lots of blushing," she said. "And it feels like in season 4 we pick up from that, but we're in a season in which we're exploring courage in so many ways. We're also exploring whether Violet is ready to be brave enough to put her heart on the line."

Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton

Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Long before *Bridgerton*, Claudia Jessie found fame on series like *Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell* (2015), *Porters *(2017–2019), and *Vanity Fair *(2018), in which she starred as Amelia Sedley alongside Olivia Cooke. Most recently, she appeared on the Netflix drama *Toxic Town* (2025).

Here, Jessie stars as Eloise, the fifth Bridgerton sibling and Penelope's closest friend. Brownell teased to* *EW that season 4 will be especially rewarding for Peneloise fans. After everything they went through in season 3, the two are "more bonded than ever."

"Their trials and tribulations last season have added new depth to their friendship, and we're excited for viewers to see how their relationship looks now that they've each grown up a little," the showrunner added.

Hannah Dodd as Francesca Stirling

Hannah Dodd as Francesca Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'

Hannah Dodd as Francesca Bridgerton on 'Bridgerton'.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Before joining *Bridgerton*, Hannah Dodd appeared in the Marvel film *Eternals* (2021) and starred opposite Millie Bobby Brown in *Enola Holmes 2* (2022). She also helped lead the Hulu teen series *Find Me in Paris *(2018–2020).

Dodd reprises her role as Francesca Bridgerton, a role played by Ruby Stokes in the first two seasons. In a recent interview with InStyle, Dodd said her connection to Francesca has deepened over time.

"I relate to her a lot. I can be quite introverted, and I have a lot going on in my brain that's not always articulated," she said. "When I started playing with her I was like, 'I'm nothing like that.' But when you get to play a character for such a long time, little elements of both of you merge. There's quite a bit of me in her."

Victor Alli as John Stirling

Victor Alli as John Stirling in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Victor Alli as John Stirling in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Rising actor Victor Alli worked on a pair of Kenneth Branagh films — *Belfast *(2021) and *Death on the Nile* (2022) — before popping up on the Emmy-winning *Star Wars* series *Andor *(2022) and the British crime drama *Gangs of London* (2025).

He returns to *Bridgerton *as John Stirling, Francesca's quiet and reserved husband. The pair got hitched and revealed they're moving to Scotland in the season 3 finale, and Alli spoke with PEOPLE about what's next.

"I think we just want to be away from it all, and that's why we go so far away and I guess we want to start a family," he said. "And I think that's next on the cards. And I guess we have the company of Eloise and my cousin. And so that's really exciting because we have a nice party."

Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling

Hannah Dodd as Francesca, Victor Alli as John, and Masali Baduza as Michaela on 'Bridgerton'

Hannah Dodd as Francesca, Victor Alli as John, and Masali Baduza as Michaela on 'Bridgerton'.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Masali Baduza gained attention as Sephy Hadley on the BBC drama *Noughts + Crosses* (2020–2022). She's dipped into movies too, with roles in the slasher *Slumber Party Massacre *(2021) and the historical epic *The Woman King *(2022).

Baduza plays Michaela Stirling, John's cousin. In the books, John's cousin is actually a man named Michael, and he and Francesca eventually catch feelings. The gender swap certainly changes the dynamics between these characters, and Brownell told EW that it was made with "immense thought and reverence."

The showrunner said reading *When He Was Wicked* as a queer woman resonated with her, particularly Francesca's sense of being different. "I felt like there was good thematic resonance telling a queer story with Francesca," she said, adding that the intention isn't "to just insert a queer character to check a box."

"There's also a certain piece of Francesca's story historically that allows us to ensure a happily ever after for her and Michaela," she continued. "It was really important for me in crafting a main queer story for us to give that couple a happy ending just like every other couple."

Adjoa Andoh as Lady Agatha Danbury

Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury in 'Bridgerton' season 4

Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury in 'Bridgerton' season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Like several of her costars, Adjoa Andoh is a veteran of English TV institutions like *EastEnders* (1990–1991), *Casualty* (2000–2003), and *Doctor Who* (2007–2008), in which she played Francine, the mother of companion Martha Jones. You may also know her from Clint Eastwood's Oscar-nominated *Invictus* (2009) and *Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl* (2024).**

Andoh plays Lady Agatha Danbury, one of *Bridgerton*'s sharpest and most compelling characters. Like Gemmell, she also appeared on* Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story*.

In a December 2025 interview with *Good Housekeeping*, Andoh described season 4 as "very twisty, very turny, and quite surprising." She also hinted that it will be "expanding the *Bridgerton *universe in new and interesting ways."

Where can I watch Bridgerton?**

*Bridgerton *is available to stream on Netflix.

Season 4, Part 1 premiered on Thursday, Jan. 29. Part 2 arrives on Feb. 26.

Michael Urie's first-ever movie role might not have made it out the editing room, but the memory lives on thanks to his incredible costar.

While playing a game of "Lie vs. Lie" with *Shrinking* costar Jessica Williams for **, Urie recalled his first big screen acting role and how a gesture from the late Brittany Murphy made the experience unforgettable.

"It was one of my very first jobs and it was a movie and I hadn't really done anything and I played a pig walker," Urie shared when prompted to talk about a time he had to work with animals. "[I was] really a dog walker, but in this scene I was picking up a pig. So, the scene was with five dogs and a pig."

When Williams correctly guessed that Urie was telling the truth, the *Ugly Betty* alum elaborated on the experience, explaining that the role had in been in the 2003 dramedy, *Uptown Girls *starring Murphy as the immature nanny to a young Dakota Fanning.

"She was so sweet and amazing as an actor," Urie recalled of Murphy, who died in 2009. "I remember her being so sweet and insisting that we'd met before, but we definitely had not. It was so sweet. I was really touched by I was like, 'No, I promise we haven't met before.' And she's like, 'Are you sure? Because I feel like we have!' and it was like so adorable and weird."

While Urie claimed he only worked on the film for "like half a day," he attended the wrap party where Murphy shared a sweet surprise about his role, which had ultimately been cut.

"I went to the rap party, and I saw her and she was, again, so sweet to me and she said, 'I mentioned you in another scene. I talked about you and I added it in,'" he told Williams, who was suitably moved, responding that she "got a little misty."

Murphy died at 32, days after collapsing in the bathroom of her home in the Hollywood Hills. Ultimately, the Los Angeles County coroner determined that the actress had succumbed to a combination of pneumonia, anemia, and "multiple drug intoxication" from over-the-counter and prescription medication.

While she was perhaps best known for her role as Tai in the 1995 comedy *Clueless* and as a paramour of Eminem's Jimmy in *8 Mile*, Murphy had an impressive number of roles in both film and television that made her a household name. She also notably portrayed Daisy in the drama *Girl, Interrupted* (1999), Shellie in Robert Rodriguez's *Sin City* (2005), Sarah in the romantic comedy *Just Married*, and, in the 2001 thriller *Don't Say a Word*, psychiatric patient Elisabeth Burrows.**

And although Urie's role ended up on the cutting room floor, there was another silver lining. "I'm not in the movie, but I do still get residuals," the actor gleefully shared. "Because I'm in the deleted scenes on the DVD."

Melania Trump is opening a movie in theaters this weekend, but will anyone show up to see it?

The short answer to that question is: yes. The long answer is complicated.

The new documentary chronicling the life and times of the First Lady in the 20 days leading up to her husband's re-election to the presidency in 2024 is opening in over 1,500 theaters on Friday. That's a remarkably wide release for a documentary — a film form which rarely exerts the same box office pull as fiction features — meaning *Melania *will be easier to see on the big screen than most docs. And premiere projections are trending up, with BoxOfficePro estimating a $1-2 million open last week, but revising to $2-5 million this week. It isn't often a documentary exceeds $3 million in its lifetime gross.

There's just one problem: the phenomenal cost Amazon MGM Studios undertook to license, market, and release the film.

The film division of the million-headed hydra run by Jeff Bezos paid an estimated $40 million to acquire *Melania* and has spent an additional $35 million on marketing and promotion. That's $75 million for a film believed to recoup at the very most $5 million in its grand debut — and diminishing returns after an increasingly sluggish January box office are sure to follow.

Daniel Loria, senior vice president and editorial director at BoxOfficePro, the theatrical industry's trade publication, tells EW that he thinks that $5 million figure itself is a "reach."

"I'm not really buying that 4 or 5 number," Loria says. He cites several factors that ought to give Amazon pause, starting with the fact that a 1,500-theater release is "extraordinary" for a documentary, "especially in the post-pandemic era." Then there's the idea that, traditionally, "these sort of public-figure documentaries usually get bought and produced for streaming. That's the real value for these things."

*Melania *isn't an event, in other words, a more-and-more necessary ingredient in box office success. Knowing it will soon be streamable on a service millions already subscribe to may make it too easy to skip in person.

But there's more. Loria points out that *Melania*'s** **"distributor already spent through a marketing campaign for a wide release last weekend in *Mercy*." That dystopian thriller starring Chris Pratt barely edged *Avatar: Fire and Ash *off the box office throne after a five-week reign. *Mercy *took in just $11.2 million domestically on a $60 million budget that doesn't factor in marketing and promotional costs.

"Now they're releasing another movie, right? And this one is coming out limited. So I think that puts this into context," Loria explains, pointing out that *Mercy *released on nearly 3,500 screens compared to *Melania*'s 1,500 screens.****

Placing *Melania *in another context yields similarly dire results; Loria compares the film with the 2024 documentary *Am I Racist*?*, *from the conservative media company *The Daily Wire*. That film also opened in around 1,500 theaters and targeted a similar political demographic to *Melania *in its marketing.

*Am I Racist* pulled in $4.5 million across its opening weekend, but was made for the comparative pittance of $3 million dollars. While the films are similarly "partisan," Loria notes that *Am I Racist *had a "provocative discourse element" to it that *Melania*, judging by its somber and decorous trailer, lacks.

None of this has stopped Donald Trump from claiming in a Monday Truth Social post that *Melania*, a "MUST WATCH," is "selling out, FAST!"

In addition to *Mercy*, *Melania *will compete with three new releases for box office glory. There's the prime contender, Sam Raimi's horror return *Send Help*, which touts the combined star power of Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. Then there's Jason Statham's action thriller *Shelter*, and Loria's dark horse, the independently produced sci-fi horror offering *Iron Lung*.

*Melania *was directed by Brett Ratner, his first film since he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women in 2017, accusations he has denied. Loria sums up *Melania*'s predicament simply: "I think the week one question is: Does Donald Trump's appeal expand to Melania for a film? The week two question is: Is Brett Ratner's movie any good?"

**Warning: This article contains spoilers about the *Wonder Man *season 1 finale. **

Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) became *Wonder Man* in more ways than one by the end of the first season. And Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley) became the Mandarin again. For a Marvel TV show that was mostly a meta story about working actors trying to make it in Hollywood, a lot sure happened in the season finale!

Episode 8 of the latest Disney+ MCU series felt a lot more like a traditional comic book show than the previous seven installments after Simon lost control of his powers and destroyed the set of the fake *Wonder Man* movie-within-the-show. In an effort to make up for betraying Simon to the Department of Damage Control, Trevor decided to save his new BFF by publicly taking the blame for the explosion, pretending to once again be the fake terrorist, the Mandarin. Despite the DODC not fully believing that it wasn't Simon, they had to take action as a result of the Mandarin's manifesto, so Trevor got a one-way ticket to a high security prison in the desert.

Because Trevor was now known as a terrorist, he was fired from the *Wonder Man *movie. His part was then recast with his former TV costar, Joe "Joey Pants" Pantoliano, and when the movie finally premiered to box office and critical success, it hard-launched Simon's career. He was now a true A-list Hollywood star, but he just couldn't get over Trevor's ultimate sacrifice.

Many months later, after training and careful planning, Simon took action. He pretended to shadow what seemed to be a normal civilian under the guise of researching his next role. But it turned out Simon was actually doing recon, because the man he was shadowing was a guard at the DODC prison. Simon successfully infiltrated the building, found Trevor's cell, and broke him out, flying them right through the concrete roof. The finale ended on that cliffhanger, with Simon giving up his anonymity as a superpowered person, as well as his successful acting career, all to save Trevor.

Below, *Wonder Man *stars Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley, along with creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, break down that "rom-com" finale ending and reveal their hopes for a second season (the show has yet to be renewed).

**: Was it always the plan to end the finale with Simon breaking Trevor out of the DODC prison?**

**DESTIN DANIEL CRETTON: **Emotionally, that was always the ending.

**ANDREW GUEST: **There was an alternate version where they performed in a black box theater together and levitated off the floor. That's true. But essentially we knew it was always about these two narcissists who, for the first time in their lives, put somebody else in front of their own needs. Simon and Trevor both needed to learn that, and it's hopefully rewarding to watch them do that for the right reasons and because they love each other, essentially.

**What play were they performing in the black box theater?**

**GUEST:** I believe it was Hamlet or something. Or no, there was a version of a play that Sir Ben's character Trevor had written that was not very good that he was going to be doing. And then Simon kind of bails him out and makes it good.

**CRETTON:** Trevor disappears and then he gets into writing and puts on this play. That would have been cool.

Ben Kingsley in Wonder Man

Sir Ben Kingsley in 'Wonder Man'.

**What was your reaction when you learned how this season ends, with Trevor taking the fall for Simon, becoming the Mandarin again, and Simon then breaking him out of prison?**

**SIR BEN KINGSLEY: **I thought it was delightful in that I've always felt Trevor had within him a kindness and also a regret for missed opportunity. And although he might have thought that his most accomplished gesture was on stage or on camera, in fact, his most consequential gesture was saving a friend, not on camera, not on stage, in real life. Very interesting.

**YAHYA ABDUL-MATEEN II:** Likewise with Simon. At the beginning, Simon was being selfish. Eavesdropping on a conversation, I hear there's this thing, he weasels his way into this audition. He was looking out for self and burying a secret about him. And we end in a way where, in order to save a friend, to do something selfless, he embraces the thing that he was trying to hide that does potentially jeopardize his career. He flies and blasts through a roof and says, "I'm going to do this for friendship. I'm not hiding anything, and actually I'm putting myself on the line to save this friendship," which is completely opposite from the place where he first started.

**KINGSLEY: **They're both gestures of sacrifice, which is really interesting.

**What drives Simon to take that step, to finally accept and expose his powers? Trevor gave him the perfect cover by taking the fall for him.**

**GUEST: **I think the irony is that Simon, in the finale, gets everything he wanted, right? He gets the role, he's starring in it, he's at the premiere, everyone's telling him how great it is, but it still feels a little empty because he's not sharing it with this person who, throughout the course of the season, we realize means so much to him. He knows he needs to do something, that he won't be fulfilled and feeling okay with himself until he makes the sacrifice.

**CRETTON: **It's basically a really good rom-com.

**Where do Simon and Trevor go from here? Because this can't be the last time that we see them.**

**CRETTON: **We already have been just brainstorming, imagining where they could go next, but we can't really tease anything at this point.

**GUEST: **We can tease a bunch of stuff that won't be real. [*Laughs*] They're both going to be in *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, which is good news! That's an exclusive.

**CRETTON: **[*Laughs*] I don't think any of us wants the show to suddenly turn into a more typical superhero show because of the ending that we have on this. We've already discussed ways that we can make sure that the tone of the show remains what it is, if we are so lucky to get a season 2.

**So you're planning on returning for a second season? Or could we actually see these characters and this story continuing in another Marvel project?**

**GUEST: **Both.

**CRETTON: **Yeah, both!

**GUEST: **I don't think we could choose one or the other.

**KINGSLEY:** Of course we [want a second season]. It would be dishonest to say, "Ooooh, I don't know. Let's wait." Of course we do. I'll say it to the world.

**ABDUL-MATEEN II: **Absolutely.

Ben Kingsley says 'Wonder Man' shows Trevor Slattery before and after the Mandarin

Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley) in Marvel Television's WONDER MAN

**What would you want to see for your characters in season 2 now that they're likely on the run together?**

**KINGSLEY: **No idea. Surprise, surprise, surprise. Expect the unexpected.

**ABDUL-MATEEN II: **The other question that I think about when I think about the future of Simon is what happens when he gets a taste of what he wants? Simon's been wanting some of the stardom. I think he's been wanting this type of success for a long time, and then he gets it, and I want to see what that does to him. I want to see what getting a taste of what you've always wanted, what it does to a guy like Simon. I'm curious about that... But what I do love about Simon, which I realized today, is in the beginning we see him in the tiny [trailer] going over his script. And then toward the end, we see him in the big star wagon [trailer] and he's still going over his script. So that tells me that he's going to be all right.
