In case its branding mascot and rainbow palette weren't a dead giveaway, Peacock is the streaming service owned and operated by NBCUniversal, which means it has access to a trove of titles that draw from Universal Studios' deep well of content.

But what does that mean for you? Well, alongside its TV series and live sports offerings, Peacock features classic movies such as *Night of the Living Dead *(1968) and *Black Christmas* (1974) alongside contemporary favorites like *Nope* (2022) and *The Phoenician Scheme* (2025). As with any streamer, its wealth of options can feel overwhelming, so allow EW to point you in the right direction.

Here are the 19 best movies on Peacock right now.

Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, *The Bad Guys* is essentially a melding of *Zootopia* and *Ocean's Eleven*. The dazzling heist comedy tells the story of a group of animal criminals that are finally caught and given the chance to reform themselves. While most of the gang is only pretending to go the straight and narrow, their leader, Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell), finds himself genuinely inspired to become better. The DreamWorks film features a stunning blend of 2-D and 3-D animation in the style of 2018's *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*, giving it that kinetic comic-book feel. —*Kevin Jacobsen***** Where to watch *The Bad Guys*: Peacock

Black Christmas (1974)

This slasher classic still holds up as one of the most chilling horror films of all time. A group of sorority sisters' good tidings of comfort and joy are interrupted by repeated profane phone calls, leading to one of them being murdered in the attic. This kicks off a horrifying series of events as they try in vain to get the police to determine the source of the call while they are picked off one by one. There have been two attempts at remaking *Black Christmas* in the 21st century, but neither has approached the level of paranoia and dread of the '70s original. —*K.J.*

Bridget Jones is back for one last hurrah, with this decidedly more poignant, Emmy-nominated final installment in the franchise. Renée Zellweger reprises her role as the titular plucky TV producer, who is now the mother of two children and mourning the unexpected death of her husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Finally ready to start dating again, she enters into a romance with a younger man (Leo Woodall) while also finding herself drawn to one of her son's teachers (Chiwetel Ejiofor). *Mad About the Boy* is much more mature compared to its predecessors, though it retains much of the series' cheeky humor and Zellweger's performance remains a highlight. —*K.J.*

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Alison Lohman as Christine Brown in 'Drag Me to Hell'

Alison Lohman as Christine Brown in 'Drag Me to Hell'. Melissa Moseley/Universal

After a five-year stint helming the original *Spider-Man* trilogy, Sam Raimi returned to his horror roots with this devilishly fun supernatural thriller. Alison Lohman stars as Christine, an ambitious bank loan officer who denies an extension on a mortgage requested by an elderly woman, who then puts a curse on her. As Christine comes to find out, the curse involves three days of torment before being dragged to Hell — literally. After trying to find solutions, she comes to realize the kind of sacrifice she must make to lift the curse.

EW's critic called *Drag Me to Hell* "a deftly unified freak show that keeps intensifying as its wormy-devil images keep spewing." While the film wasn't as big of a box office performer as some were expecting, critics were effusive in their praise. "Going back to his roots," writes EW's critic, "Raimi has made the most crazy, fun, and terrifying horror movie in years." —*K.J.*

While most war films center on traditional battles and heart-wrenching, character-driven moments, Christopher Nolan's *Dunkirk* is focused on showing the brutal impact of war on the many rather than the few. The film follows the titular evacuation during World War II, deftly split up into one week of action by land, one day by sea, and one hour by air. As we bounce between the three perspectives, we get a visceral picture of the horrors and uncertainties that these men (boys, really) faced at this pivotal point in European — and world — history. The film earned Nolan some of the best reviews of his career, with EW's critic praising it as "a full-body sensory experience that sweeps you up in its thrall and places you directly into the fog of war." —*K.J.*

Jane Austen's Regency era social commentaries continue to find new life centuries later through movie and television adaptations. While some filmmakers remain as faithful as possible to her text, others adopt a more modern approach, utilizing the conventions of contemporary trends. Autumn de Wilde falls into the latter camp, giving her version of the tale of clever matchmaker Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy) a self-aware irony. Michael Moore, known for his award-winning documentaries *Roger & Me* (1989) and *Bowling for Columbine* (2002), delivered another cinematic juggernaut with this audacious and controversial documentary. *Fahrenheit 9/11* — crowned with the Palme d'Or and holding the title of America's highest-grossing documentary — fearlessly scrutinizes the Bush administration's exploitation of post-9/11 paranoia to advance unjust wars in Afghanistan and Iraq instead of seeking the terrorist attack's true perpetrators.

As EW's critic notes, "*Fahrenheit 9/11* offers a catharsis for the audience. Dazzlingly assembled, at once reckless and insightful, the movie filters the actions of the Bush administration through a nose-thumbing outrage that might have been irresponsible if Moore's own words weren't girded by images that spoke 1,000 more." *—James Mercadante*

Few movies have ever rivaled the level of wonder and magic evoked when Laura Dern's Ellie Sattler witnesses a dinosaur as John Williams' majestic score swells in *Jurassic Park*. Steven Spielberg's iconic blockbuster about a trio of scientists who investigate an island on which a business magnate has created a theme park of cloned dinosaurs will simply never be topped — no matter how many sequels Hollywood tries to spawn. After all, as Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) quips in the film, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." After robotics expert Gemma (Allison Williams) develops an artificial intelligence-powered doll named M3GAN for her grieving niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), the dangerously smart humanoid starts to exhibit possessive qualities. And God forbid anyone who poses even a minor threat to Cady. EW's critic calls *M3GAN* "a scampering Blumhouse caper that turns out to be blithely self-aware, negligibly jump-scary, and mostly very fun," and audiences seemed to agree — the film grossed nearly $100 million at the U.S. box office. —*K.J.*

Memento (2001)

*Memento* was Christopher Nolan's first mainstream foray into noodling with notions of time. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man who suffers from amnesia following the murder of his wife. Seeking justice, Leonard tries to make sense of his life while his failing short-term memory prompts him to tattoo important information on his body and take photographs with a Polaroid camera.**** The film cleverly uses both chronological and non-linear editing interchangeably, putting the viewer in the protagonist's mind as we try to put together an elaborate puzzle. A widow, she receives a pension that gives her the means to travel to Paris in the hope of purchasing a Dior dress, though she struggles to fit in with the snobbish world of haute couture upon her arrival. With a budget just over $100,000, George Romero's indie horror masterpiece transformed the zombie genre, reshaping these once-subjugated creatures into autonomous, flesh-craving fiends while forever etching them into pop culture (and paving the way for future undead favorites like *The Walking Dead*). Revolving around a group of unlikely survivors holed up in an abandoned farmhouse, this film unravels as they fend off an onslaught of ravenous ghouls storming the area. *Night of the Living Dead* didn't just make cinematic history; it gnawed its way into the collective consciousness, birthing a thriving franchise with five sequels from 1978 to 2009, which all carry Romero's iconic directorial touch. *—J.M.*

A series of twists and turns unfold from there, but suffice it to say, Peele's mind for both spectacle and substance is on full display. After undergoing months of brutal training set to '80s Italo music, Alexander Skarsgård sculpted himself into a colossal and wrathful Viking warrior prince in Robert Eggers' adaptation of the Norse legend that inspired Shakespeare's *Hamlet* (and, much later, *The Lion King*). In a less Disney-esque twist, Prince Almeth receives a sobering message from a Seeress — played by Icelandic pop icon Björk in her return to acting after a two-decade hiatus — who urges him to fulfill his oath of vengeance against his uncle, the culprit behind his father's death and his mother's abduction.

A visually dazzling spectacle, *The Northman* is described by EW's critic as "Eggers' biggest film in both scope and budget," and "a sprawling summit-of-the-gods epic shot through with rich, hallucinatory set pieces, and movie stars in wild Pagan wiggery." —*J.M.*

But first, he hopes to cement his legacy with a world-spanning scheme, while trying to assuage angry investors and dodge assassination attempts. Like many of Anderson's films, *The Phoenician Scheme* features an all-star cast including Del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Bryan Cranston. *Point Break* is an early-'90s film through and through, a cops and robbers crime drama with some of the hottest actors of the era that's also a lot about surfing. Keanu Reeves stars as the brilliantly named Johnny Utah, a detective tasked with going undercover to bust a group of surf-loving bank robbers. But, as Johnny immerses himself in that particular subculture, he finds himself curiously drawn to it, particularly because of the group's charismatic leader, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze).**** Critics were mixed at the time (EW's own gave it a C+), but, as time has passed, we've come to appreciate its earnest sensibilities and director Kathryn Bigelow's thoughtful examination of male friendships, while still delivering as traditional popcorn entertainment. —*K.J.*

Once upon a time, in a swamp far, far away, Mike Myers graced us by voicing DreamWorks' misanthropic ogre. In this charming, old-fashioned caper, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, who previously worked together on 1969's *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid*, play grifters who try to get one over on a crime boss who killed one of their partners. A complex long con is set in motion as they assemble a savvy group of men to help pull off the scheme — each with their own motives.

The film ultimately received 10 Oscar nominations, winning seven, including Best Picture. Redford recalled to EW in 2018, "[Director] George Roy Hill loved reading the funny papers. Belle is a brainy beauty from a small village who desires a life beyond the provincial domesticity that's expected of young women. When a horrific man-beast abducts her father, she bargains with the monster to take his place. As Belle settles into the Beast's palatial castle — filled with a friendly staff of anthropomorphic furniture and glassware — she discovers that her captor and his servants owe their present state to a cruel curse.

If the Beast can give and receive true love from another, the spell will be lifted, but his irascible nature makes this quite the challenge. *Beauty and the Beast* is arguably the crown jewel of Disney's golden age circa the late '80s and early '90s. Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Parminder Nagra as Jess Bhamra (center) in 'Bend It Like Beckham'. Christine Parry/Fox Searchlight

This coming-of-age soccer movie (or, rather, football in England, where it's set) catapulted Keira Knightley to movie star status, but it's *Bend It Like Beckham*'s cultural perspective and commentary that truly make it special. The story follows Jess Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), a teen girl obsessed with soccer (and with David Beckham, who gave the film permission to use his name because he wanted to promote girls' soccer). Feeling suffocated by her strict Indian parents and their hope that she'll someday become a homemaker and devoted wife, Jess secretly joins a soccer team and must juggle responsibilities for both her family and her coach (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).

The film resonates with anyone who knows the acute angst of pretending around loved ones to be someone they're not. The result is director Gurinder Chadha's supremely watchable sports film about gender, culture, sexuality, diversity, and love — and it's a touching one to boot. *—Ilana Gordon***

The transformation thrusts him headfirst into adulthood, sending the naive pre-teen on a literal coming-of-age journey that emphasizes the old maxim: Be careful what you wish for. Giselle (Amy Adams) is the quintessential animated maiden, with a song in her heart and true love on her mind. As she starts to approach her highly coveted "happily ever after" with the dashing Prince Edward (James Marsden), the tyrannical Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) sends the princess from the two-dimensional land of Andalasia to the real world of New York City. After befriending her polar opposite in a divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey), Giselle begins to adapt to the big city lifestyle — until her friends from home come to call.

Twenty-first-century Disney films with a metatextual lens on the studio's own classics have become a subgenre of their own, but few do it as saliently as *Enchanted*. This movie is required viewing for anyone who knows their princess mythos inside and out. *—D.N.*

Marlin teams up with Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres), a blue tang fish with a short-term memory problem. Walt Disney/Everett Collection

A charming story about a mother and daughter learning to understand each other, *Freaky Friday *(2003) is a remake of a film from 1976 and features smart writing, top-notch physical comedy, and real chemistry between stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Curtis plays Tess Coleman, a widowed psychologist and author who doesn't agree with any of her daughter Anna's (Lohan) choices. The two clash heads until forces beyond their control switch their bodies, making them live as each other.

Curtis does some of her best comedic work playing Tess as seen through Anna's eyes, throwing her whole being into her performance as a teenager trapped in a grown-up's body. The film is a millennial favorite, and its 2025 sequel got an A– review and enthusiastic approval from an EW critic. *—I.G.***

Peter "Star-Lord" Quill (Chris Pratt) is a fast-talking, slightly dim-witted intergalactic thief who ends up in a brutal space prison after swiping a valuable alien artifact. Inside the facility, Peter meets (and reluctantly befriends) an oddball crew of fellow inmates, including the enigmatic Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who is regarded as the deadliest woman in the galaxy. With his new friends in tow, our antihero escapes the facility and uncovers a nefarious plot that threatens the entire universe.

As it turns out, Star-Lord & Co. are the only ones who can intervene. What can possibly go wrong? Although interwoven into Marvel's massive 23-film Infinity Saga, James Gunn's *Guardians of the Galaxy* is so effortlessly artful that it succeeds as a stand-alone story. *—D.N.*

A millennial classic that is sure to put a spell on you, *Hocus Pocus *is the story of what happens when three 17th-century witches face off against 20th-century teenagers. Back in the 1690s, the Sanderson sisters were condemned to death after the witches drained the life force from a young girl to keep themselves from aging. Three hundred years later, their home of Salem, Mass., is now a typical New England suburb — and the sisters are back to finish what they started.

Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker combine their comedic and musical powers to create the best three witch team since the Weird Sisters. And this original trio of stars returned for the film's sequel, released on the Disney+ platform in 2022. *—I.G.*

A '90s movie in the best way possible, *Home Alone *offers hijinks, holiday cheer, and suggestions for how to economically booby trap your home. There are plenty of movies chronicling the triumph of the human spirit, but what about triumphs of sheer animal will? *Homeward Bound* follows three pets temporarily left at a farm while their family moves to the city — but these pets will not be denied. Determined to find their way back to their humans, the wise Shadow, the sarcastic Sassy, and the impulsive Chance attempt to navigate their way home using only their wiles and each other.

While the film doesn't technically qualify as a nature documentary, the shots of the three pets crossing the Sierra Nevada make for some solid cinematography. And if the bickering and bantering between the animal leads doesn't win you over, the ending will take you down. *Homeward Bound *is a great movie to watch with kids and pets, as long as you don't mind them seeing you cry. *—I.G.*

BANGKOK (AP) — It often starts with a text message asking if you are available on weekends, looking for a part-time job or you get a simple "hello" from an unknown number. Halfway across the world, a laborer is usually pulling in 12-16 hour days, sending non-stop messages, hoping someone will take the bait.

The ultimate goal is always to take your money — victims have lost tens of billions to scams and hundreds of thousands of people are in forced labor to keep the schemes going. These workers are often housed in massive complexes scattered across southeast Asia, where the industry has flourished.

Here is why rooting out the scamming industry is such a complex issue:

The crackdown in Myanmar

The Myanmar military last month went into one of the most well-known scam compounds — the massive KK Park, along the border with Thailand — and announced its shutdown, though civil society groups later said parts of the compound are still operating.

The workers fled, with about 1,500 laborers — hundreds of them from India but also Chinese, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Ethiopians and Kenyans, among other nationalities — crossing into Thailand. Troops then demolished several structures within the massive complex, according to Thai military officials.

Thailand is now working with India and other foreign governments to repatriate their citizens. On Thursday, one of the largest groups of workers was flown home aboard Indian air force transport planes and more are to return next week.

However, KK Park was just one of dozens such centers along the Thai-Myanmar border and hundreds across Southeast Asia.

Emerging from casinos and illegal gambling

Scam compounds are often located in rural areas, sprawling complexes with sleeping quarters, shops and entertainment venues for the staff.

They are constructed on a model where developers may build out a single property and then lease out the space inside to various companies.

They often operate with the protection of local elites. Smaller operations also exist — housed in one floor of legitimate office buildings, or even a rented house in an urban area.

The centers originated from casinos — both online and physical casinos that mushroomed across Southeast Asia. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime counted more than 340 licensed and non-licensed casinos in 2021 alone.

The casinos and attached junket tours attracted high-rollers from China, where gambling is outlawed and are operated by Chinese criminal groups.

During the pandemic, visiting such locations became difficult amid strict travel restrictions. Lacking customers, some online casinos shifted their work model to a criminal operation: defrauding targets from all over the world through digital schemes.

Relying on both trafficked and willing labor

It's estimated that at least 120,000 people across Myanmar may be held in situations where they are forced to work on online scams, with another 100,000 people in Cambodia, according to a 2023 Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Right report.

The numbers are estimates at best, but scam centers rely on a mix of trafficked and willing laborers, lured by false promises of relatively high salaries and an easy office job.

Early on, workers came from China and Chinese speaking countries, but now the U.N. drugs and crime office says laborers are drawn from 56 countries, from Indonesia to Liberia.

The reality is a stark contrast from their expectations — their passports are often confiscated to keep them from leaving the complex. Only very senior managers and trusted lieutenants are able to have freedom of movement, workers have said. Workers who don't perform are beaten or face other physical punishments.

A global scourge

Scammers don't discriminate — they target people across the world, aided by translation tools that are powered by artificial intelligence.

In the Philippines, authorities raided a complex in March 2024 where workers had been targeting Chinese nationals in an investment scheme. Working off a script, the scammers pretended they were a high-ranking employee at the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation and got their targets to invest in crude oil futures, according to a copy of a script seen by The Associate Press.

Last month, about 50 South Koreans were repatriated from Cambodia, arrested over previous several months on accusations they worked for online scam organizations.

Also recently, U.S. prosecutors unveiled an indictment against Chen Zhi, Chinese-Cambodian businessman on charges of defrauding people in a massive criminal network. The prosecutors charge that his organization scammed 250 Americans out of millions of dollars, with one losing $400,000 alone in cryptocurrency.

In 2024, Americans lost at least $10 billion to Southeast Asia-based scams, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

The victims

Scams vary in how they're carried out, ranging from investments in cryptocurrency, to online task scams where people are asked to top-up to get their next task — with real money sometimes paid out in the earlier stages of a scam.

Many scammers build a sense of urgency when asking for an investment, saying the target will miss out if it's not done by a certain time.

Despite government efforts to crack down and free workers trapped in scam centers, and raids that have shut down some compounds, activists say the main culprits are still at large. There are new reports of scam centers continue to surface both in Southeast Asia and across the world

A United Nations report in April said scammers have bilked victims out of billions of dollars through false romantic ploys, bogus investment pitches and illegal gambling schemes reported operating as far afield as Africa and Latin America.

"If we only rescue the victims, and don't arrest anybody, especially the Chinese mafia and those transnational syndicates, then there will be no point," said Jay Kritiya, the coordinator of the Civil Society Network for Victim Assistance in Human Trafficking.

"They can get more victims ... they can scam anytime," said Kritiya, who has rescued forced laborers from scam compounds.

Shein's new brick-and-mortar store—its first in the world—sticks out like a sore thumb.

The Chinese retailer, known for its range of cheap ultra-fast-fashion clothing and criticisms of its labor and environmental practices, is nestled on the sixth floor of a more than century-old building in Paris, a city famous for high-end fashion and a recent green push. BHV, the 19th-century department store hosting Shein, also sits opposite Paris City Hall, which has launched a campaign against the fast-fashion retailer.

"The city of Paris reaffirms that Shein is contrary to its values," Paris Deputy Mayor Nicolas Bonnet-Oulaldj told reporters outside department store BHV on Tuesday. "This is not the vision of the City that we defend," Bonnet-Oulaldj said at a strike against bringing in Shein last month.

The store's opening, which was received by hours-long queues, has been roiled by protests over listings of "childlike" sex dolls on Shein's marketplace, which hosts both Shein-branded products and third-party sellers.

The French government initiated proceedings on Wednesday to ban Shein's online site in the country "for the time necessary for the platform to show to the authorities that all of its products are finally in compliance with our laws and regulations," according to France's finance ministry.

Shein said in a Nov. 3 statement that it has banned all sex-doll products, permanently banned the sellers, removed related listings and visuals from the platform, and temporarily delisted the adult products category from its site while it conducts a review. The company said it has also "strengthened its keyword blacklist" to prevent a breach of its marketplace rules, and temporarily suspended all sales by third-party sellers on its marketplace in France—a decision made independently of France's review.

"The fight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for SHEIN. These were marketplace listings from third-party sellers—but I take this personally," Donald Tang, the chairman of Shein, said in a statement to TIME.

Shein's French spokesperson Quentin Ruffat said the sale of the dolls were a "malfunction in our processes and governance" and that the company has taken a "swift response" to implement safeguards and review its processes. The ecommerce giant is also expected to make its clothing lines available in five Galeries Lafayette malls, which like BHV is owned by the Société des Grands Magasins (SGM) group in the cities of Dijon, Grenoble, Reims, Angers, and Limoges, though the dates are not set. Shein was founded in China in 2008 before relocating its operations to Singapore in 2022.

Here's what to know about the scandal rocking Shein.

Political backlash

French politicians have been vocal against Shein's arrival in Paris, especially after the weekend revelations of sex doll listings.

"Our capital cannot become the showcase for disposable goods and exploitation," Ian Brossat, a senator for Paris from the French Communist Party, said in a Monday statement. "This partnership goes against all the commitments taken by France and Paris to more firmly regulate the fashion industry."

On Oct. 31, France's consumer watchdog, the DGCCRF, found the "childlike" sex dolls for sale on Shein and referred the retailer to prosecutors, noting that it was "difficult to doubt the child pornography nature of the content." Prosecutors on Monday launched an investigation into Shein and AliExpress over alleged "images or depictions of minors of a pornographic nature," and the two platforms as well as Temu and Wish for allegedly making "violent, pornographic, or degrading messages" accessible to minors.

A spokesperson for Shein told TIME that the company is "committed to working with the French authorities to address any concerns swiftly as we have always done and we are seeking dialogue with the authorities and government bodies on this issue." The company said in a statement that it will provide "seller, buyer, and product information" requested by authorities.

TIME has also reached out to the other e-commerce platforms for comment.

France's High Commissioner for Children Sarah El-Haïry, who raised the issue of the product listings and has requested that their buyers be tracked, said the dolls "serve as training for pedocriminals ready to act."

Before the ban on Wednesday, French lawmakers also called out listings for weapons that are banned in France like brass knuckles.

"Enough is enough with the pedopornographic dolls, and now the weapons," Commerce and Small Business Minister Serge Papin said in parliament on Wednesday.

France has targeted online platforms before, including suspending Wish, the e-commerce marketplace based in the U.S., in 2021 for a year and a half over its sale of dangerous products. Shein's physical store, however, has still been able to open its doors.

Protests surround store opening

As customers first entered the new Shein store on Wednesday, riot police officers stood watch. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in protest, with some streaming inside the department store as others were escorted out by security guards. Outside, activists held up signs reading, "Protect children, not Shein" and handed out flyers about the retailer's "suspected forced labor" and "pollution," according to French news outlets Le Monde and AFP.

From the window at City Hall of Paris mayoral candidate David Belliard, a member of The Greens, hung a poster that read, "Shein no thanks."

More than 120,000 people have signed a petition against the opening of Shein in Paris, as of Thursday.

Row between stores

The backlash towards Shein has extended beyond demonstrations on the street and government probes. Twelve brands said they would pull their products from BHV over Shein's launch. Disneyland Paris also announced that it would no longer be designing BHV's Christmas window displays this year, French broadcaster BFM-TV reported.

"Everyone is free to make their own decisions," BHV director Karl-Stéphane Cottendin told BFM-TV on Monday, adding that a dozen brands out of more than 2,000 sold at BHV is a small fraction of the department store's sales.

When a brand like Shein "has a large client base—one in three French people shops there—you have to integrate it into BHV," he added.

On Tuesday, Galeries Lafayette also terminated its partnership with parent company SGM over a "strategic divergence." Seven regional department stores, which are in Angers, Dijon, Grenoble, Le Mans, Limoges, Orléans, and Reims, will be rebranded by SGM and no longer carry the banner of Galeries Lafayette.

The Galeries Lafayette group had criticized SGM's decision to bring Shein into its department stores.

"Galeries Lafayette refuses to allow Shein to set up shop in the five affiliated stores in SGM's French network," the group said in early October. "Galeries Lafayette wishes to express its profound disagreement with this decision in view of the positioning and practices of this ultra-fast-fashion brand, which run counter to its offering and values. It also contravenes the contractual terms of affiliation that bind the SGM group to Galeries Lafayette."

SMG president and BHV owner Frédéric Merlin defended the company's exclusive partnership with Shein. "I don't believe I'm complicit in child pornography at BHV," he told RTL radio on Tuesday, adding that Shein has 25 million customers "who are now considered bad people" for buying from Shein.

A giant poster of Merlin with Shein executive chairman Donald Tang was pasted on the front of BHV to promote the launch. Above their smiling faces, the black-and-white photo is provocatively captioned, "The poster we shouldn't have made!"

Merlin said SGM considered pulling the launch after the sex dolls listings were discovered but decided to move forward with it after Shein announced it would ban the products worldwide. Merlin said on social media on Monday that BHV would not carry products from Shein's international marketplace.

"Shein isn't a pedopornographic brand," Cottendin told BFM-TV. "They themselves don't stand by selling this product. They're removing it, they apologized, they're taking all necessary action, they're investigating, so we're not going to ban Shein from our store because of this."

(Reuters) -China has begun designing a new rare earth licensing regime that could speed up shipments, but it is unlikely to amount to a complete rollback of restrictions as hoped by Washington, industry insiders said.

The Ministry of Commerce told some rare earth exporters ‌they will be able to apply for new streamlined permits in the future and in industry briefings outlined the documents that will be ‌required, two sources familiar with the matter said.

The export curbs have become Beijing's most potent source of leverage in its trade rivalry with Washington, as China produces over 90% of the world's processed rare earths and rare earth magnets, vital in products ranging from cars to missiles.

Following the agreement reached between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, China said last ‌week it would pause for one year the restrictions it imposed in October.

However, China's commerce ministry has said nothing publicly about a broader round of controls introduced in ‍April that rattled global supply chains.

The White House said on Saturday that China had agreed to introduce general licenses and characterised such permits as the de facto end of China's rare earth export controls.

In private, Chinese officials have said they are working on the licenses, three other sources briefed on discussions said, although one said it ‌could take months.

However, other industry insiders said the new licenses do not mean China's wide-ranging rare earth export controls introduced in April have been removed.

China's Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters.

ONE YEAR, POTENTIALLY HIGHER VOLUMES

The new licenses would be valid for a year and probably allow larger export volumes, the first two sources said. Companies are preparing documents, which will require more information from customers, they said.

The sources said they expect more clarity by the end of the year.

Some Chinese rare earth companies said they have not yet been informed of the change.

General licenses will likely be harder to acquire for users associated with defence or other sensitive areas, some industry sources said.

All ‍sources spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter.

Introduced in April and expanded in October, Beijing's rare earth rules require exporters to obtain licenses for every cargo, an onerous and lengthy process customers complain is holding up exports. The restrictions created shortages in May which brought parts of the auto industry to a halt.

Of the ‌2,000 applications submitted by European Union firms since April, just over half have been ‌approved.
