Sydney Sweeney is finally ready to talk about it.

The "Euphoria" star, 28, spoke with GQ about the elephant in the room during her "Christy" press tour: the chatter surrounding her controversial American Eagle jeans ad, which sparked backlash over the summer as critics accused it of being tone deaf and offensive. There was so much discussion about the ad that even President Donald Trump weighed in.

"I did a jean ad," Sweeney told GQ. "I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I'm literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life."

The "Christy" actress went on to say it was "surreal" to see the president and vice president of the United States commenting on her ad, while noting that much of the chatter didn't make its way to her.

"I kind of just put my phone away," she said. "I was filming every day. I'm filming 'Euphoria,' so I'm working 16-hour days and I don't really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So I didn't really see a lot of it."

Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans ad sparks controversy: Here's why

Sweeney declined to defend the content of the ad itself, telling GQ that "when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear." But she said that she "knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans," so the situation "didn't affect me one way or the other."

Sweeney's ad, released in July, played on the pun of "genes" and "jeans" being homophones, featuring the Emmy-nominated actress clad in denim as she says, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." The commercial then proclaims that Sweeney "has great jeans."

Sydney Sweeney attends the "Christy" premiere during 2025 AFI FEST at TCL Chinese Theater on Oct. 25, 2025, in Hollywood, California.

Critics took issue with the idea of Sweeney, a conventionally attractive white woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, being used as the archetype of "good genes."

"Something about an ad sexualising a woman with blonde hair and blue eyes while commenting that she has great 'jeans' feels extremely conservative especially in this political climate," one X post, which drew over 200,000 likes, read.

Others jumped to Sweeney's defense and mocked the backlash to the ad, including members of the Trump administration and the president himself.

Sydney Sweeney attends Variety's 2025 Power of Women at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on Oct. 29, 2025.

"My political advice to the Democrats is continue to (call) everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi," Vice President JD Vance joked on the conservative "Ruthless" podcast. Trump, meanwhile, praised Sweeney on Truth Social for having the "'HOTTEST' ad out there," adding, "Go get 'em Sydney!"

Sydney Sweeney wears denim in social media return, but doesn't address American Eagle ad

But Sweeney remained silent on the controversy while it was happening and refrained from commenting on the backlash until her GQ interview months later. The comments come as Sweeney promotes her Oscar hopeful "Christy," which sees her take on the role of professional boxer Christy Martin.

In September, Sweeney told Vanity Fair she would not be discussing the American Eagle ad while promoting "Christy" at the Toronto International Film Festival. "I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I'm not there to talk about jeans," she said. "The movie's about Christy, and that's what I'll be there to talk about."

American Eagle previously addressed the ad backlash in a brief statement shared on its social media in August. "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans," the company said. "Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone."

American Eagle Outfitters CEO Jay Schottenstein more recently defended the ad, and the decision not to pull it due to the backlash, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "You can't run from fear," he told the outlet. "We stand behind what we did."

Diane Ladd, the Oscar-nominated star of generation-defining films like *Chinatown*, *Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore*, and *Wild at Heart*, and who was the mother of actress Laura Dern, has died at the age of 89.

Ladd's daughter confirmed her mother's death on Monday with a statement shared to * *that read, "My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother passed with me beside her this morning at her home in Ojai, Calif." The *Big Little Lies *star continued, "She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now."

Ladd was born Rose Diane Ladner in Laurel, Miss., on Nov. 29, 1935. The only child to a veterinarian father and actress mother, Ladd was destined for the kind of path-breaking career she'd eventually win, counting Tennessee Williams, the greatest literary export of her home state, among her relatives.

The actress married Bruce Dern in 1960 — the year after he starred in a production of the Williams play *Sweet Bird of Youth *alongside Geraldine Page and Paul Newman. She and Dern produced two children before their divorce in 1969, remaining amicable for the rest of her life. "He's one of the world's greatest actors, Bruce. He wasn't such a great husband, but he's a really great actor," Ladd joked in 2023 by her daughter's side.

In 2015, Ladd noted that she never dreamed of Hollywood stardom after breaking out on Broadway. "I wanted to stay in New York and become a theater actress. I loved the theater," she told the *Los Angeles Times*. But uncredited parts in the sensational 1961 Carroll Baker thriller *Something Wild*, and Norman Jewison's nightclub comedy *40 Pounds of Trouble *from the year after, led to significant parts in some of the landmark films of the latter half of the Hollywood century.

Ladd received three Oscar nominations for her oddball, spitfire, entirely idiosyncratic performances in three major films: *Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore*, the 1974 feminist drama that helped launch the career of its young director, Martin Scorsese; *Wild at Heart*, the Cannes-winning road epic from David Lynch that transformed arthouse cinema; and *Rambling Rose*, another memorable collaboration with Laura made the year after *Wild at Heart*, which cemented their indelible screen chemistry.

Laura and Ladd shared the screen numerous times in an ongoing collaboration spanning decades. The *Marriage Story *star first appeared as a child in an uncredited role in the Scorsese film — Ladd's first taste of major acclaim as the sarcastic waitress Flo. Ladd played Dern's mother in *Wild at Heart*, her mother figure in *Rambling Rose*, and they'd go on to star together in the ripped-from-the-headlines miniseries *The Siege at Ruby Ridge*, Laura's cult classic HBO series *Enlightened*, the abortion dramedy *Citizen Ruth*, and *Inland Empire*, Lynch's last film, for which they reteamed in 2006.

"She was only, like, 11 years old, and I said, 'Don't be an actress. Be a doctor, be a lawyer,'" Ladd told CBS News in 2023, reflecting on raising her Oscar-winning daughter. "Nobody cares if you put on weight or your chin points when you cry if you're a doctor. They just want you to be the best you can be. But an actress? They care, care, care, care, care."

Ladd worked steadily through her sixth decade in show business, appearing in the last five years on the *Big Bang Theory *spinoff series *Young Sheldon*, and in the coming-of-age drama *Gigi & Nate*. In 2010, Ladd, Bruce Dern, and their daughter were honored with adjoining stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in a joint ceremony commemorating their indelible contributions to the art of acting.**

"The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert insists in a new interview that he's more conservative than the "lefty figure" people perceive him to be.

Speaking to GQ's Zach Baron in an interview published Monday, Colbert talked about his work on the show and its recent cancellation last summer.

Though Colbert has frequently attacked President Donald Trump and Republicans, he told Baron that the audience demographics for his show were split evenly among Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

"People perceive me as this sort of lefty figure; I think I'm more conservative than people think," Colbert told GQ. "I just happen to be talking about a government in extremis. And so what I'm giving you is my reaction video to the day. And my reaction video is like 'The Scream,' in a way, but with jokes."

He continued, "So that makes me perceived as more left necessarily than I am, because I'm not sure what other reaction would be an honest one. It's hard to have a balanced reaction to the idea of troops on streets of a city that actually is not undergoing an invasion."

Colbert Tells Trump To 'Go F--- Yourself' After President Taunts Him Over Show Cancellation

Colbert said that he did not intend "The Late Show" to be a show to "save the republic" as people claimed, but he was later motivated by the 2016 election to warn audiences about Trump.

Colbert has even helped raise money for the Democratic Party and was an open supporter of Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign.

Stephen Colbert considered it reasonable for people to believe that "The Late Show" was canceled for political reasons.

"I literally did the first six months of the show going: What should we do tonight? What's my attitude tonight? What's my point of view tonight? And it really wasn't until the political campaign of 2016 really started cooking that I realized again that you cannot do these shows unless you're talking about something you really care about, that's in the daily conversation," Colbert said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Colbert commented about CBS and its parent company Paramount's decision to end his show after reaching a $16 million lawsuit settlement with Trump. CBS has said the decision was purely financial regarding Colbert's program.

Democrats Fawn Over Stephen Colbert For Holding 'Truth To Power' After Cbs Cancels Show

Colbert suggested it was "reasonable" for people to believe the decision was politically motivated.

"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" will air its last episode in May.

"I can understand why people would have that reaction because CBS or the parent corporation — I'm not going to say who made that decision, because I don't know; no one's ever going to tell us — decided to cut a check for $16 million to the President of the United States over a lawsuit that their own lawyers, Paramount's own lawyers, said is completely without merit. And it is self-evident that that is damaging to the reputation of the network, the corporation, and the news division," Colbert said.

Jonathan Bailey has a lot to smile about these days.

Aside from the blockbuster finale Wicked: For Good barreling toward theaters on Nov. 21, the English star, 37, was just crowned PEOPLE's 2025 Sexiest Man Alive. "I haven't thought about it," English star says of how the title might change his life. "If it gets intense, maybe I can call one of the Chrises or The Rock."

Bailey first realized his fame was growing after catapulting into the spotlight following the 2020 premiere of the steamy Netflix series Bridgerton, in which he plays Lord Anthony. "I had the radio set for my alarm, and one morning it went off with, 'Here's the news at 7. But just before we go, can we talk about Jonathan Bailey?' " the actor says with an incredulous laugh. "I was like, 'Where is my journal? Is this real?' It was wild."

Having earned an Emmy nomination for his role as a closeted congressional staffer in the Showtime series Fellow Travelers, Bailey also made his 2024 big-screen debut as Prince Fiyero in the movie musical megahit Wicked, followed by this summer's blockbuster Jurassic World: Rebirth.

"I feel so lucky that I never, never thought that I would be partaking in these sorts of stories," he says. "Because I think it meant that I was just so fastidious and dedicated to each job as it came, because I was so grateful for it and never thought there'd be another one coming."

Raised in rural Oxfordshire along with his three older sisters by his mom, Carole, and dad, Stuart, Bailey says he was "really enthusiastic, probably quite annoying. Hard to calm down," as a child. "I don't think I ever thought of myself as sexy as I grew up."

Jason Hetherington

He was especially close with his three sisters. "They were like my heroes growing up," he adds. "I doted on on them." Asked about the last time he was moved to tears, the actor admits he always has a soft spot for family.

"Like my niece was pupil of the week, and I was just so proud of her," he says. "And she's the eldest of the next gen of Baileys. And that made me well up. In fact, all my sisters, when they send pictures of their kids — I do find family does make me really emotional."

Though he had to keep being named Sexiest Man Alive under wraps until the reveal, Bailey was excited to share the news with his loved ones. "It's a huge honor. Obviously I'm incredibly flattered. And it's completely absurd," he says, laughing. "It's been a secret, so I'm quite excited for some friends and family to find out."

Thanks to her mom, Maya Hawke was more than prepared for her brief stint working with Quentin Tarantino.

The actress, who played a member of the Manson Family in *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood*, recently reflected on her experience with the filmmaker during a chat on Amy Poehler's *Good Hang* podcast. At one point, Poehler pointed out that Hawke's mom, Uma Thurman, has starred in three of Tarantino's previous films and asked whether she gave her daughter any advice about working with him.

"'Keep your shoes on,'" Hawke replied, playfully addressing the speculation about Tarantino's supposed foot fetish. The response caught Poehler off guard.

"Keep your shoes on," the *Parks and Recreation *alum repeated, fighting back laughter. "Keep them on, baby. Are you gonna try-" Poehler and Hawke then burst into giggles, with the host momentarily speechless by Thurman's words. "Perfect advice," she eventually said. "Perfect."

Countless quips have been made about Tarantino's apparent obsession with feet, a theory about the filmmaker that is fueled by moments like the "wiggle your big toe" set piece in *Kill Bill*. Fans have found plenty of "evidence" within his other films, including *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood*, which includes a few shots of bare feet. It got to a point where even the stars of Tarantino's films couldn't help but take a few shots at the director.

While accepting the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild, *Once Upon a Tim*e star Brad Pitt jokingly roasted the director for his foot shots. "I want to thank my co-stars," Pitt began, before rattling off the following list: Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Margot Robbie's feet, Margaret Qualley's feet, Dakota Fanning's feet. "Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA," he concluded.

'Kill Bill 3' with Uma Thurman's daughter Maya Hawke would be exciting, says Quentin Tarantino

For his part, Tarantino has brushed off the jokes, telling GQ in 2021, "I don't take it seriously." That said, the publication noted that he heaved "a sigh of disappointment that we would even think to ask such a thing," when the question of the supposed foot fetish was raised.

Tarantino added, "There's a lot of feet in a lot of good directors' movies. That's just good direction. Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it, and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it."

As for Hawke's actual experience working with Tarantino, she has spoken highly of her time on set, though she only played a small role in the Oscar-winning film.

"It was wonderful," Hawke told* *in 2019. "Quentin is such a brilliant and enthusiastic filmmaker and director. His passion radiates through you. There are very few people who love movies as much as he does."**

She added that she's also had the pleasure of not just being directed by Tarantino but "knowing him." This is likely a reference to the fact that her mother has known the filmmaker for decades, after starring in *Pulp Fiction* and his duology,* Kill Bill: Volume I* and *Kill Bill: Volume II.*

The actress and filmmaker had a famously rocky relationship, which Thurman opened up about in a 2018 interview with *The New York Times*, where she shared that Tarantino pressured her into operating a car, which she had been warned was unstable. She said she eventually suffered an injury when she crashed the car. The filmmaker has called the crash "one of the biggest regrets of [his] life" and admitted that "a trust was broken" between them.

That same year, Thurman told EW that she has since forgiven Tarantino for the incident and even said she would be willing to work with him again "if he wrote a great part" for her.

"I understand him and if he wrote a great part and we were both in the right place about it, that would be something else," Thurman said. "We've had our fights over the years. When you know someone for as long as I've known him, 25 years of creative collaboration…yes, did we have some tragedies take place? Sure. But you can't reduce that type of history and legacy."**

In case its branding mascot and rainbow palette weren't a dead giveaway, Peacock is the streaming service owned and operated by NBCUniversal, which means it has access to a trove of titles that draw from Universal Studios' deep well of content.

But what does that mean for you? Well, alongside its TV series and live sports offerings, Peacock features classic movies such as *Night of the Living Dead *(1968) and *Black Christmas* (1974) alongside contemporary favorites like *Nope* (2022) and *The Phoenician Scheme* (2025). As with any streamer, its wealth of options can feel overwhelming, so allow EW to point you in the right direction.

Here are the 19 best movies on Peacock right now.

The Bad Guys (2022)

Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, *The Bad Guys* is essentially a melding of *Zootopia* and *Ocean's Eleven*. The dazzling heist comedy tells the story of a group of animal criminals that are finally caught and given the chance to reform themselves. While most of the gang is only pretending to go the straight and narrow, their leader, Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell), finds himself genuinely inspired to become better. The DreamWorks film features a stunning blend of 2-D and 3-D animation in the style of 2018's *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*, giving it that kinetic comic-book feel. —*Kevin Jacobsen***** Where to watch *The Bad Guys*: Peacock

Black Christmas (1974)

Olivia Hussey as Jess Bradford in 'Black Christmas'

This slasher classic still holds up as one of the most chilling horror films of all time. A group of sorority sisters' good tidings of comfort and joy are interrupted by repeated profane phone calls, leading to one of them being murdered in the attic. This kicks off a horrifying series of events as they try in vain to get the police to determine the source of the call while they are picked off one by one. There have been two attempts at remaking *Black Christmas* in the 21st century, but neither has approached the level of paranoia and dread of the '70s original. —*K.J.*

Bridget Jones is back for one last hurrah, with this decidedly more poignant, Emmy-nominated final installment in the franchise. Renée Zellweger reprises her role as the titular plucky TV producer, who is now the mother of two children and mourning the unexpected death of her husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Finally ready to start dating again, she enters into a romance with a younger man (Leo Woodall) while also finding herself drawn to one of her son's teachers (Chiwetel Ejiofor). *Mad About the Boy* is much more mature compared to its predecessors, though it retains much of the series' cheeky humor and Zellweger's performance remains a highlight. —*K.J.*

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Alison Lohman as Christine Brown in 'Drag Me to Hell'

Alison Lohman as Christine Brown in 'Drag Me to Hell'. Melissa Moseley/Universal

After a five-year stint helming the original *Spider-Man* trilogy, Sam Raimi returned to his horror roots with this devilishly fun supernatural thriller. Alison Lohman stars as Christine, an ambitious bank loan officer who denies an extension on a mortgage requested by an elderly woman, who then puts a curse on her. As Christine comes to find out, the curse involves three days of torment before being dragged to Hell — literally. After trying to find solutions, she comes to realize the kind of sacrifice she must make to lift the curse.

EW's critic called *Drag Me to Hell* "a deftly unified freak show that keeps intensifying as its wormy-devil images keep spewing." While the film wasn't as big of a box office performer as some were expecting, critics were effusive in their praise. "Going back to his roots," writes EW's critic, "Raimi has made the most crazy, fun, and terrifying horror movie in years." —*K.J.*

While most war films center on traditional battles and heart-wrenching, character-driven moments, Christopher Nolan's *Dunkirk* is focused on showing the brutal impact of war on the many rather than the few. The film follows the titular evacuation during World War II, deftly split up into one week of action by land, one day by sea, and one hour by air. As we bounce between the three perspectives, we get a visceral picture of the horrors and uncertainties that these men (boys, really) faced at this pivotal point in European — and world — history. The film earned Nolan some of the best reviews of his career, with EW's critic praising it as "a full-body sensory experience that sweeps you up in its thrall and places you directly into the fog of war." —*K.J.*

Jane Austen's Regency era social commentaries continue to find new life centuries later through movie and television adaptations. While some filmmakers remain as faithful as possible to her text, others adopt a more modern approach, utilizing the conventions of contemporary trends. Autumn de Wilde falls into the latter camp, giving her version of the tale of clever matchmaker Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy) a self-aware irony. EW's critic praises de Wilde's "sweet alchemy of bringing together something old and something new — as serenely breezy to the end as her beloved heroine." —*K.J.***

Michael Moore, known for his award-winning documentaries *Roger & Me* (1989) and *Bowling for Columbine* (2002), delivered another cinematic juggernaut with this audacious and controversial documentary. *Fahrenheit 9/11* — crowned with the Palme d'Or and holding the title of America's highest-grossing documentary — fearlessly scrutinizes the Bush administration's exploitation of post-9/11 paranoia to advance unjust wars in Afghanistan and Iraq instead of seeking the terrorist attack's true perpetrators.

As EW's critic notes, "*Fahrenheit 9/11* offers a catharsis for the audience. Dazzlingly assembled, at once reckless and insightful, the movie filters the actions of the Bush administration through a nose-thumbing outrage that might have been irresponsible if Moore's own words weren't girded by images that spoke 1,000 more." *—James Mercadante*

Few movies have ever rivaled the level of wonder and magic evoked when Laura Dern's Ellie Sattler witnesses a dinosaur as John Williams' majestic score swells in *Jurassic Park*. Steven Spielberg's iconic blockbuster about a trio of scientists who investigate an island on which a business magnate has created a theme park of cloned dinosaurs will simply never be topped — no matter how many sequels Hollywood tries to spawn. After all, as Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) quips in the film, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." After robotics expert Gemma (Allison Williams) develops an artificial intelligence-powered doll named M3GAN for her grieving niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), the dangerously smart humanoid starts to exhibit possessive qualities. And God forbid anyone who poses even a minor threat to Cady. EW's critic calls *M3GAN* "a scampering Blumhouse caper that turns out to be blithely self-aware, negligibly jump-scary, and mostly very fun," and audiences seemed to agree — the film grossed nearly $100 million at the U.S. box office. —*K.J.*

Memento (2001)

*Memento* was Christopher Nolan's first mainstream foray into noodling with notions of time. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man who suffers from amnesia following the murder of his wife. Seeking justice, Leonard tries to make sense of his life while his failing short-term memory prompts him to tattoo important information on his body and take photographs with a Polaroid camera.**** The film cleverly uses both chronological and non-linear editing interchangeably, putting the viewer in the protagonist's mind as we try to put together an elaborate puzzle. "*Memento* has a spooky repetitive urgency that takes on the clarity of a dream," writes EW's critic. "It's like an Oliver Sacks case study played as malevolent film noir." —*K.J.*

Comedies aimed at older audiences can sometimes feel cheap and condescending these days. Not so with this unabashedly sweet dramedy about a London cleaner named Ada Harris (Lesley Manville). A widow, she receives a pension that gives her the means to travel to Paris in the hope of purchasing a Dior dress, though she struggles to fit in with the snobbish world of haute couture upon her arrival. With a budget just over $100,000, George Romero's indie horror masterpiece transformed the zombie genre, reshaping these once-subjugated creatures into autonomous, flesh-craving fiends while forever etching them into pop culture (and paving the way for future undead favorites like *The Walking Dead*). Revolving around a group of unlikely survivors holed up in an abandoned farmhouse, this film unravels as they fend off an onslaught of ravenous ghouls storming the area. *Night of the Living Dead* didn't just make cinematic history; it gnawed its way into the collective consciousness, birthing a thriving franchise with five sequels from 1978 to 2009, which all carry Romero's iconic directorial touch. *—J.M.*

(Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) — who own a ranch in Hollywood that is one day visited by a mysterious entity from the sky. A series of twists and turns unfold from there, but suffice it to say, Peele's mind for both spectacle and substance is on full display. After undergoing months of brutal training set to '80s Italo music, Alexander Skarsgård sculpted himself into a colossal and wrathful Viking warrior prince in Robert Eggers' adaptation of the Norse legend that inspired Shakespeare's *Hamlet* (and, much later, *The Lion King*). In a less Disney-esque twist, Prince Almeth receives a sobering message from a Seeress — played by Icelandic pop icon Björk in her return to acting after a two-decade hiatus — who urges him to fulfill his oath of vengeance against his uncle, the culprit behind his father's death and his mother's abduction.

A visually dazzling spectacle, *The Northman* is described by EW's critic as "Eggers' biggest film in both scope and budget," and "a sprawling summit-of-the-gods epic shot through with rich, hallucinatory set pieces, and movie stars in wild Pagan wiggery." —*J.M.*

Wes Anderson's playful new comedy, *The Phoenician Scheme*, centers on a business magnate (Benicio Del Toro) who hopes to bequeath his estate to his nun daughter (Mia Threapleton). But first, he hopes to cement his legacy with a world-spanning scheme, while trying to assuage angry investors and dodge assassination attempts. Like many of Anderson's films, *The Phoenician Scheme* features an all-star cast including Del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Bryan Cranston. *Point Break* is an early-'90s film through and through, a cops and robbers crime drama with some of the hottest actors of the era that's also a lot about surfing. Keanu Reeves stars as the brilliantly named Johnny Utah, a detective tasked with going undercover to bust a group of surf-loving bank robbers. But, as Johnny immerses himself in that particular subculture, he finds himself curiously drawn to it, particularly because of the group's charismatic leader, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze).**** Critics were mixed at the time (EW's own gave it a C+), but, as time has passed, we've come to appreciate its earnest sensibilities and director Kathryn Bigelow's thoughtful examination of male friendships, while still delivering as traditional popcorn entertainment. —*K.J.*

Once upon a time, in a swamp far, far away, Mike Myers graced us by voicing DreamWorks' misanthropic ogre. He was living the dream, basking in the solitude of his boggy sanctuary, until a horde of storybook creatures — a talking donkey, three little pigs, seven dwarves, and more — decide to crash the party after being ousted from the kingdom by Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). To reclaim his peace and quiet, Shrek must rescue a certain red-haired princess, all for the sake of Farquaad's romantic fantasies. In this charming, old-fashioned caper, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, who previously worked together on 1969's *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid*, play grifters who try to get one over on a crime boss who killed one of their partners. A complex long con is set in motion as they assemble a savvy group of men to help pull off the scheme — each with their own motives.

The film ultimately received 10 Oscar nominations, winning seven, including Best Picture. Redford recalled to EW in 2018, "[Director] George Roy Hill loved reading the funny papers. He loved the idea of telling a story in four or five panels, so he was able to take the somewhat flawed script, shift a few things around, and turn it into something damn near perfect." —*K.J.*
