The ABC series, which debuted in 2023, stars Ramón Rodríguez as the titular character, a dyslexic special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Across the first four seasons, Will honed his investigative skills while learning to be more vulnerable. He also navigated complex relationships with his GBI colleagues Faith Mitchell (Iantha Richardson) and Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) and his childhood friend, Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen).
Season 4 proved to be the series' most shocking outing yet, with multiple deaths thinning out the ensemble and making for an uneasy future. What does all this change mean for next season? Will there be a season 5 of Will Trent? Here's what we know so far.

Yes, Will Trent has been renewed for a fifth season. This comes as little surprise given the show ranks alongside High Potential and The Rookie as ABC's most-watched shows.
How did Will Trent season 4 end?

Season 4 was a bloodbath. First, Amanda, Will's mentor, was killed while investigating a cult-like group forming around a serial killer. And then Dr. Seth McDale (Scott Foley) died in a car accident while driving Angie to the hospital to deliver her baby.
Angie delivered a healthy baby, but was too depressed to care for it. Will stepped in, taking a leave of absence to help care for the child as Angie recovered.
"Here's the contract. I will be here, slightly terrified. I'm probably going to mess up some, but I will make sure you are okay," Will tells the child, who is named Edie. "I'll make sure that you feel safe and loved."
Meanwhile, Will and Faith team with Angie and her fellow APD detectives Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin), and Franklin (Kevin Daniels) to investigate a sex-trafficking ring that may or may not have ties to some very powerful figures. Will and Ormewood will be working together as partners, and Faith and Angie will also pair up.
What will Will Trent season 5 be about?

There's no official synopsis for Will Trent season 5 just yet, but showrunners Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen, and Karine Rosenthal teased a bit of what to expect in an interview with TV Insider.

"Going into season 5, it just really felt like we needed a reset and some new energy, and some new dynamics," said Heldens, saying the season 4 deaths aligned with "what we thought was best for the future of the show."
Thomsen, meanwhile, said the trafficking case allows for a story about how "power corrupts, and we’ve got these good guys who aren’t going to let that hold them back."
Rosenthal teased the arrival of a new GBI deputy director, saying that Jason Davis' Bill Appleyard was just a "placeholder." She added, "There will be a new person with a new dynamic for Will and Faith, and that’ll be interesting, and hopefully set up some new types of conflict."

No official cast list has been announced as of this writing, but it's clear based on comments from the showrunners that Rodríguez, Christensen, Richardson, McLaughlin, and Daniels will return.
Speaking with TVLine, Christensen discussed how she hopes Angie and Will will grow closer while caring for Edie in season 5. "They have always only had each other to count on in their lives. The romantic relationships aside — and as much as they have been lovers — they have been family to each other. So that makes sense to me," she said. "I don't think that they would — from where we leave them, having him step in to help Angie and Edie — I don't think they distance themselves from each other after that."
Christensen also spoke of Angie and Faith teaming up together on the trafficking case. "You know, we've never really seen the feminine energy aligned... I'm really excited to see Angie and Faith tap into their strength and their passion jointly, and just really dig in," she said.
Is there a release date for Will Trent season 5?

Since its 2023 debut, Will Trent has premiered in January or February of each year. There's no reason as of yet to think season 5 won't debut around the same time in 2027. We'll update this with an official premiere date when there is one.
