Creator Taylor Sheridan may call Texas home, but the writer has become at least as closely associated with another state: Montana. Sheridan's mega-hit series Yellowstone was famously set there (as are its two spinoffs, Marshals and the upcoming Dutton Ranch) and now he's adding to his Big Sky resume with his latest series, The Madison.
Centered on Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer) and her family who find themselves searching for meaning in the wilds of Montana after an emotionally shattering tragedy, the state is practically a character in the show. But did the series really film there?

The Madison gets its title from a duo of matched names—the Madison River Valley in Montana and Madison Avenue in New York City, where the Clyburns call home. For the more rugged parts of the season, the show kept true to its name, filming in and around the Madison River Valley, a slightly different part of the state than was used in Sheridan's Yellowstone.

"We had been in the Bitterroot Valley for Yellowstone for so long," says Christina Alexandra Voros, The Madison's director and executive producer, who also worked closely with Sheridan on Yellowstone. "It's beautiful, but it is very much its own ecosystem. And I think [Taylor] wanted to explore another part of that world visually. It's a very different look. It's a very different feel being down in the Madison River Valley."
Voros added, "It's just a completely different language of nature in that space. And it was exciting to explore a different ecosystem."

As for the "Madison Avenue" part of the equation… well, some liberties were taken. Much of the "New York" that appears in The Madison was actually filmed in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas. That's not entirely surprising, given that Fort Worth-based Sheridan has a production studio in the Metroplex where many of his other series, including Landman and Lioness, are filmed.
