The cast of 'Star Trek: Voyager' in 1995. Credit:
*Star Trek: Voyager** *debuted over 31 years ago but its legacy still lives on. For seven seasons, a hodgepodge crew mixing Starfleet and the rebellious Maquis put aside their differences after they got zapped 70,000 lightyears away from Earth, deep into the uncharted Delta Quadrant. The series marked the return of spaceship-based adventures for the *Star Trek *franchise after the starbase-set *Deep Space Nine*. It was also the first to feature a female captain leading the show.
There were some hiccups along the way. The first actress cast in the lead part of Captain Kathryn Janeway, Genevieve Bujold, quit after two days on the job. Then the producers kept tinkering with the formula, most notably how Kate Mulgrew’s Janeway wore her hair. But those who weren’t sold on day one (though many were!) were cheering by season 7, when it looked like our friends might actually make it home.
Though each week’s adventure usually meant new characters — and you must check out this list of awesome, unexpected appearances — what kept the warp core thrumming (other than dilithium crystals) was a spectacular cast.
Many of them, as we shall soon read, are still involved in the *Star Trek *franchise, and not just signing autographs at conventions. But to learn where the cast members of *Star Trek Voyager *are today, simply lay in a course to the next system.
Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-mulgrew-bb1b60e2e6534ed5b68e6888619c03e5.jpg)
Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Mulgrew in January 2026.
Kate Mulgrew auditioned for the part of Captain Janeway and didn’t get it. Genevieve Bujold (star of *Coma *and *Dead Ringers*) did, but after two days of filming she abandoned ship. Mulgrew jumped right into a production that had already left spacedock and, well, she killed it.
For seven seasons, she led a complex and diverse crew through some of the most dangerous scenarios of any *Star Trek *captain, and did it without being able to check in with Starfleet Command. Prior to *Voyager, *she was best known for the CBS soap *Ryan’s Hope *(she was Mary Ryan, daughter of a New York innkeeper) and also led one season of *Mrs. Columbo*, a failed spinoff of *Columbo*.
After *Voyager *ended, she made an appearance in the film *Star Trek: Nemesis* (2002), then made waves on stage with a one-woman show called *Tea at Five*, as Katharine Hepburn. She was part of the ensemble cast of the comedy series *NTSF:SD:SUV::* before her turn as Red in *Orange Is the New Black*. As she said to * *at the time, “I will be 60 this month. I couldn’t play Red at 35. I’m no longer cast for my sexuality or physical charisma, so in a way it’s freeing.”
More recently, she returned to the *Trek *franchise, first as a hologram, then as herself (though animated) in the kid-focused cartoon *Star Trek: Prodigy*. She remains active in New York theater and frequently attends *Star Trek *conventions. She has published two books, *Born with Teeth*, a memoir in 2015, and *How to Forget*, about her mother’s diagnosis with Alzheimer's in 2019.
Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-jeri-2e05f50e574343faa241814350ba4a95.jpg)
Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Ryan in March 2026.
Believe it or not, Seven of Nine, one of the first things anyone remembers about *Star Trek: Voyager*, didn’t appear until season 4. Quite frankly, the producers felt they needed a ratings boost, so they brought on a gorgeous woman and put her in an outfit so tight she could hardly breathe. They even came up with an in-universe reason for this: she was a recovering Borg, and the special polymers of her clothing helped heal her nanotech innards or something. God bless science-fiction.
Jeri Ryan's time on the show wasn't easy. Mulgrew later said she resented the producers' decision to introduce Seven of Nine as a sex symbol. Ryan, who was also dating one of the showrunners, Brannon Braga, became the target of that resentment, and Mulgrew has acknowledged that she was less than professional when shooting scenes with her new costar. (Mulgrew has since apologized.)
But you’d never know any of this while watching. Ryan’s performance as the cyborg-out-of-water is quite good (and, like Leonard Nimoy’s turn as Spock, subtly funny). She and the writers earned their spot in the fandom.
After *Voyager*, Ryan was a regular on *Boston Public*, *Shark*, and *Body of Proof*. Most recently she was on a season of *Dark Winds*. She also returned to *Trek *for *Star Trek: Picard*.
In her private life, her marriage to Illinois Senator Jack Ryan led to a bit of a scandal (she did nothing wrong!), leading him to withdraw from the 2004 Senate race. Winning his seat in a special election was a young man named Barack Obama.
Robert Beltran (First Officer Chakotay)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-beltran-e317260f6a6a4c40bf8d5fdef6caddc1.jpg)
Robert Beltran as First Officer Chakotay on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Beltran in August 2016.
Though Chakotay and Janeway were once nemeses, they joined forces to lead the assembled crew back home. He was always there to give her advice or have some wacky interpretive dream.
Robert Beltran, whose first major role was in the underground hit *Eating Raoul* (1982), also returned for the kid series *Star Trek: Prodigy*, but only in voiceover. His acting work since the series ended includes episodes of *CSI: Miami*, *Medium*, and the HBO series *Big Love*. Beltran regularly appears at *Star Trek *conventions and used to get in fights on Twitter. (He’s mellowed out lately.)

Tim Russ (Tuvok)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-russ-63d3daf863d24726a3dcf51df13438cb.jpg)
Tim Russ as Tuvok on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Russ in September 2024.
Chakotay may have been Captain Janeway’s executive officer, but Tuvok was her moral center. The first Vulcan with a regular role on *Star Trek *since Spock, Russ (who had previously done a guest spot on *Star Trek: The Next Generation*, and had the funniest line in sci-fi/comedy classic *Spaceballs*) brought new depth to this alien species, and remains a fan favorite.
After *Voyager*, Russ appeared on the Christina Applegate-led sitcom *Samantha Who?* as Frank the Doorman (he got a lot of the good zings). He also made appearances on *Castle*, *Criminal Minds*, and in *Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! *(2015)*.*
He’s returned to *Star Trek* both officially and unofficially. He appeared on the recent series *Picard* and is heard on the scripted podcast *Star Trek: Khan*. In 2007 and 2008, however, he appeared in and directed episodes of *Star Trek: Of Gods and Men*, one of the bigger budget non-canonical “fan films” that were a bit of a sensation at the time. He also has a rock band, The Tim Russ Crew, that gigs around Los Angeles and are pretty damn good!
Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-mcneil-b49a7b731e284e3da17ea015891babd3.jpg)
Robert Duncan McNeill as Tom Paris on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; McNeill in May 2016.
Robert Duncan McNeill, a *Trek *alum from a key *The Next Generation *episode, was pivotal to *Voyager* as the plucky pilot Tom Paris. He was an admiral’s son, but also a bit of a troublemaker who just needed someone like Captain Janeway to believe in him. He also regularly stood in for the audience as a hardcore fan of sci-fi. (Did Tom Paris know that he was on a sci-fi show? I think he did.)
Since *Voyager*’s conclusion, he has had a great deal of success as a director, most notably on shows like *Dawson’s Creek*, *Desperate Housewives*, *The O.C., Chuck, Blue Bloods*, and, importantly, *Star Trek: Enterprise*. He also directed two episodes of Seth MacFarlane’s *Star Trek* homage *The Orville*.
He also recently returned to voice Tom Paris on *Star Trek: Lower Decks*, and was a good sport about it, too. In recent years, he’s sported a bushy beard, leading some fans to confuse him for *The Next Generation*’s Jonathan Frakes. (I’ve seen it happen at conventions.)
Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-dawson-7e68916358c3441e8138a21c69393bef.jpg)
Roxann Dawson as B'Elanna Torres on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Dawson in May 2025.
B'Elanna Torres was the fiery Maquis engineer, half-human half-Klingon, who kept the warp engines moving on all seven seasons of *Star Trek: Voyager*. She’s also something of a “daughter figure” to Captain Janeway, especially in the pre-Seven of Nine days.
Prior to *Star Trek*, Roxann Dawson was a regular on the series *Nightingales* and appeared on *Baywatch** *and *Jake and the Fatman*. (She was neither Jake nor the Fatman.)
While she did continue to act after *Voyager *on shows like *Without a Trace *and *The Closer*, she too found success as a director, particularly with her 2019 film *Breakthrough. *Her TV credits include *Caprica*, *The O.C.*, *Treme*, *House of Cards*, *The Americans*, *This is Us*, and *Foundation*.
Weirdly enough, her first husband was Casey Biggs, who played Damar on *Deep Space Nine*. As such, whether they want to or not, they are periodically at *Star Trek *conventions at the same time.
Ethan Phillips (Neelix)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-ethan-5347985d77d1400ba40c37a437d5d526.jpg)
Ethan Phillips as Neelix on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Phillips in February 2017.
The very beating heart of *Voyager* is everyone’s favorite Talaxian, Neelix, the ship’s morale officer. Neelix is a big doofus who wears loud clothing and a chef’s hat, and sometimes saves the day, but mostly is there for people to talk to. Similar to Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan on *The Next Generation*.
Prior to *Voyager*, Phillips was a successful theater actor born to Broadway royalty — his parents ran a popular steakhouse in the heart of New York’s theater district. His biggest role on television was on the political comedy *Benson*, which is pretty funny because he costarred on that show with Rene Auberjonois, who was on *Deep Space Nine*. (They were chummy at conventions until Auberjonois’ passing in 2019.)
Since the end of *Voyager*, Phillips has remained a television guest spot mainstay. *Chicago Hope*, *JAG*, *Arrested Development*, *Boston Legal*, and *Girls *are just the tip of the iceberg.
On film, his most notable role was as Mitch Gorfein in the Coen Brothers’ *Inside Llewyn Davis* (2013). (Yes, that’s his cat.) He’s also in *Irrational Man* (2015) and *The Purge: Election Year* (2016). At conventions, he’ll sometimes do a stand-up routine that absolutely kills.
Robert Picardo (The Doctor)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-picardo-02cbae65be534c8989fa5493ea448525.jpg)
Robert Picardo as The Doctor on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Picardo in March 2026.
If Neelix was the show’s beating heart, The Doctor was its snark. Played to perfection by Robert Picardo, the Emergency Medical Hologram was programmed to save lives and give sass. Yes, he was someone you could “turn off” by telling the computer to make him go away, but when you are stuck 70,000 lightyears from home, a yukster is good to have around
Prior to *Trek,* Picardo was a celebrated performer onstage, appearing in Leonard Bernstein’s opera *Mass *and in the hit play *Gemini*. His breakout on television was on *China Beach* (also playing a doctor) and he was also seen in films like *The Howling* (1981), *Gremlins 2: The New Batch *(1990), and voicing the taxi in *Total Recall* (1990).
After *Voyager*, Picardo worked in comedy and sci-fi on *Sabrina, the Teenage Witch*, *Frasier*, *Stargate: Atlantis*, and *Smallville*. He also plays a rabbi in the Coen Brothers movie *Hail Caesar!* (2016). He returned to the role of The Doctor in *Star Trek: First Contact* and as Lewis Zimmerman, who created The Doctor’s program, on *Deep Space Nine*.
He returned to the role recently on *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy*, because holograms don’t die, even 900 years down the timeline.
He is a mainstay at *Star Trek *conventions and is particularly fun paired with Ethan Phillips. The two were close friends before the show and remain BFFs today.
Garrett Wang (Ensign Harry Kim)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-wang-a6821651f080469999b49689f8e824ae.jpg)
Garrett Wang as Ensign Harry Kim; Wang in August 2016.
The young ensign who, after seven seasons, remained an Ensign, Harry Kim was kind of the dork of the show, which is saying something for *Star Trek*.
Garrett Wang went on to appear as Kim on the comedy series *Star Trek: Lower Decks* (actually, several Kims, thanks to the multiverse) and was a voice on *American Dad!*, the animated series created by the *Trek*-obsessed Seth MacFarlane. He keeps busy within the fandom, appearing on podcasts and at conventions. He, too, does a stand-up routine that’s a great deal of fun.
Jennifer Lien (Kes)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-lien-8592682b158f4a6e8ffbb2daf7b92dd3.jpg)
Jennifer Lien as Kes on 'Star Trek: Voyager'; Lien at Grand Slam XI: The Sci-Fi Summit.
Before there was Seven of Nine, there was Kes the Ocampan, a confusing character who was either a grown woman or, like, three weeks old. Jennifer Lien did her best with the part, but it was weird, and she was written off after three seasons. (The episode where she was possessed by a belligerent alien and got to act *other *than Kes is quite good.)
Prior to *Voyager, *she was a regular on the ABC series *Phenom* and the soap opera *Another World*. After *Voyager,* she was in the indie *SLC Punk!* (1998) and did some voiceover work.

Tom Wright (Tuvix)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/voyager-Tom-Wright-b934d3bcc14a4846845eae6ede77a48a.jpg)
Tom Wright as Tuvix on 'Star Trek: Voyager'.
Though he only appeared in one episode, Tuvix's legacy is vast.
When a mishap crossed the DNA of Tuvok and Neelix, it begat Tuvix. His episode is the most controversial in the show's seven-season run.
Tom Wright took what could have been a gag character and made it his own, filling it with grace and humanity (despite being half-Vulcan and half-Talaxian). His final scene (no spoilers) remains devastating to watch.
Leading up to *Voyager,* Tom Wright appeared in a slew of movies, like *The Brother From Another Planet* (1984), *Matewan* (1987), *Troop Beverly Hills* (1989), and *Reversal of Fortune* (1990). He was also on several episodes of *Seinfeld*, as one of George Costanza’s coworkers at the New York Yankees.
After his, um, dismissal from *Voyager*, his notable credits included *24*, *House*, *Modern Family*, *Castle*, *Major Crimes*, and *Daisy Jones and the Six*. He has not appeared at a *Star Trek *convention at the time of this writing, but he is, believe it or not, going to take a victory lap in Las Vegas later this year.
He is well aware of how this episode has only grown in stature over time and become something of a meme. Indeed, only now, years after the show has gone off the air, can you buy a Tuvix action figure. Maybe bring one for him to sign in Vegas.
