Chiara Ferragni faces up to five years in prison over charges of aggravated fraud stemming from a charitable collaboration to sell branded Pandoro Christmas cakes.
In 2022, the 38-year-old Italian fashion influencer — who skyrocketed to internet fame with her fashion blog in 2009, becoming the first fashion blogger to be on the cover of Vogue in 2015 — sold Pandoro Christmas cakes in collaboration with Italian food company Balocco, the boxes of which read that Ferragni and Balocco "support the Regina Margherita hospital in Turin."
The next year, however, the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) sanctioned Ferragni for allegedly misleading the public, arguing that the box's messaging — which was also shared to her social media — made it appear that each purchase of a Pandoro Christmas cake would benefit the hospital; in reality, the AGCM claimed, Balocco only made one €50,000 donation to the hospital.

Ferragni initially responded to the allegations in a video on Instagram, calling the fraud claims "disproportionate and unfair" and a "communication error." She also said that she would donate the €1 million fee she was paid by Balocco for the collaboration to the hospital.
By the end of 2024, the influencer had reportedly paid a total of €3.4 million to settle and resolve various investigations surrounding various charitable donations — including the €1 million to the hospital, a €1 million fine from the AGCM, and another €1.2 million to a children's charity to settle an antitrust case over Ferragni-branded Easter eggs.
In May 2024, Ferragni's company put out a statement, promising that it would "refrain from carrying out operations in which commercial activities are connected to charitable activities."

After remaining quiet on social media for much of 2024, the internet personality reemerged over the past year — to promote collaborations with several luxury brands and appear on the covers of several regional beauty magazines — while the trial over fraud charges against her looms.

Per The Cut, Ferragni is next expected in court on Tuesday, Nov. 25. If convicted, she could face between one and five years in prison, according to Reuters.
In a January statement about the forthcoming trial, Ferragni's lawyers told Reuters, "We remain firmly convinced that this matter has no criminal relevance and that every controversial element has already been addressed and resolved before the AGCM."
