Melissa Joan Hart offered a throwback to her Sabrina the Teenage Witch era — and earned the wrath of cat lovers on social media.
In a video posted to Instagram, the 49-year-old actress is seen sitting in a chair and jokingly kicking a fake cat made to look like the talking cat Salem from the show. The video then transitions to Hart in a different outfit and seated with her large black dog, as if by magic.
"When people ask me if I'm a cat person," the text over the video reads as the stuffed cat is thrown in the air and kicked by the actress.

She captioned the video: "No Salems were harmed in the filming of this silly video," adding: "P.S. I like cats, but I love dogs!"
While meant in jest, some social media users were not amused, with one commenting, "Not going to lie this was a bit heartbreaking, poor salem 😢 lol."

Added another: "This isn't your best work still a fan but this was hard to watch."

The television series centered on Hart as Sabrina Spellman, a teenager who discovers on her 16th birthday that she is a witch hailing from a long line of witches — including her two aunts, with whom she lives, alongside Salem, a warlock doing penance as a house cat.

The show ended its seven-season run in 2003.
During a conversation with PEOPLE at 90s Con in Daytona Beach, Fla., in September, Hart answered affirmatively when asked if the show could still air in 2024.
"Yes, I guess so. I think so," she clarified, with a caveat about the show's feline costar. "Salem, some of Salem's lines might have to change. Like he might've been a little racy, might have been a little inappropriate."
